Very few people are familiar with the Sitka black-tailed deer that occupy the rainy islands of Southeast Alaska. A passionate biologist, Sophie Gilbert, shares her story of learning about these deer through her PhD research and how she finds help from a local hunter, Prince of Wales resident and hunter, Jim Baichtal.
Through his hunting knowledge they are able to capture and deer and utilize GPS collars to learn about their mysterious habits. The more that Sophie learns about Southeast Alaska hunting culture, hearing stories of unbelievable deer habitat in the high alpine that Jim calls his “Nirvana”, the more interested she becomes in hunting these deer for herself. Sophie didn’t grow up hunting, so the concept is foreign to her, but her mentor, Jim, is able to help her down the path.
Filmmakers and storytellers, Tyler Johnerson and Randy Newberg, accompany Jim and Sophie on an epic adventure to Jim’s “Nirvana”. The crew experience the ruggedness of the landscape, ponder the mysteries of these deer, learn about the culture of the deer on these islands, and come home with the prized meat that they provide.
An unlikely friendship, exciting adventure, and learning about the hunting culture of these deer offer a unique glimpse into the story of the “Rain Deer”

"You have to earn it" That might be one of the best descriptions of PNW rainforest hunting I've heard. With the amount of work involved... it's something you definitely earn.

Breathtaking scenery. Amazing adventure. Wonderful story. Challenging hunt. Stunning bucks. Detailed perspective. What else could we who may never experience a Sitka Blacktail deer hunt ask for?! The group of hunters that made this film of such a wonderful place have truly inspired me and I am sure many others to one day arrive to hunt that great deer! Thank you for sharing this magical film.

Jim has such a passion for those deer and the country they live in. Around 9 mins in, that is a real 'grunt' but so worth it. As a non res alien hunter I could never afford to hunt there, but you brought the experience to me, it must be getting boring hearing this Randy and crew, but, best film yet:)

Was really fun to watch this at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Rendezvous in Boise with Randy Newberg and Dr. Gilbert. The Q&A afterwards was very rich and informative. There’s so much more to the story - forestry practices, weather and climate, as well as a general lack of data on Sitka blacktails, so be sure to visit sitkablacktail.org if you’re interested in learning more.

I was raised in Juneau and cut my hunting teeth chasing Sitka Blacktail and have had the incredible opportunity to hunt Whitetail and Mule Deer and the humble Sitka is #1 in my experience. A true physical and mental challenge and I’ll take it over Minnesota corn feed Whitetail any day........ Sitka Blacktail is the best of the best for me!!!!

What an amazing video. My jaw is still laying on the floor here somewhere...I should pick it up eventually. Amazing country, amazing animals, and some great people. That old Hawken is a character unto itself. Its owner a treasure. Questions for your Biologist: I have heard Columbia Blacktail are a hybrid of Mule Deer and Columbia Whitetail. When Lewis and Clark whined and complained at Fort Clatsop about the weather, they mostly saw Columbia Whitetail from what I can gather. So Sitka's.....where are the progenitor species? Where did they come from? Do they share some common DNA with our more Southern species? Are they really a Blacktail like my Columbia's, or are they a unique species? Are they Columbia that migrated North and were isolated? Inquiring minds want to know...assuming anyone does at all. That quote from Mr. Roosevelt at the end? I loved it. He absolutely is a hero of mine.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. FINE Ambassadorship. SE Alaska, and a sunny day? GET, while the getting is GOOD. The view is breath takingly beautiful, and such a rare treat. I lived in Juneau for a year and a half. It was a treat to drink coffee at the kitchen table and watch the mist ascend Mt. Juneau in the morning. The sun comes out, everyone plays hookey from work and white legs are everywhere.
