In the 90's I worked for a company who had an autistic savant working there. His desk was right near mine and a few other coworkers and pretty much amazed us daily. He was used for speed data entry and computer programming. He used to take home instruction manuals and zip code books and memorize them. He also memorized Thomas Guide map books before the age of internet maps and could give you detailed directions if your destination was in a Thomas Guide he'd read. He didn't get or understand jokes at all and other concepts such as ideas making money.

"Stay back at Walbrook with Charlie Babbit...." It broke my heart the moment that showed Bruner was right. Raymond couldn't grasp that staying with his brother and returning to Walbrook were different choices. He wanted the familiar (Walbrook, his "home") but he wanted his brother too.

Great reaction Madison, glad I found the channel. I am autistic with Asperger's syndrome, so this has always been a special film for me. And you're right, Dustin did nail the roll. He spent some time with the late Kim Peek, who was an autistic savant, and it really helped him get all the nuances down. I am a reactor as well and have seen many, and you're doing great so far, you just need to adjust the volume levels and you'll be great to go. I look forward to hanging out with you virtually again soon. ✌️🎬

No one has ever reacted to "Losin' It" (1983) starring Tom Cruise as far as I can tell. You'd be the first. Have you seen TC in "Risky Business" also from 1983? What have you seen? Besides what you've uploaded of course. Congratulations of 7K. Subbed.

I love that you acknowledged and appreciated Tom Cruise’s performance in this film. What Dustin Hoffman does in this film is so alien from who Hoffman is, who so many people know from so many other films. So of course you can’t help but notice what Hoffman is doing. But it’s Tom Cruise’s character who actually has the arc and the major transformational journey. And you’re so right that so much of what sells Hoffman’s performance is Tom Cruise playing off of him. The two actors and their performances serve and support each other. I’m going to recommend two of Tom Cruise’s greatest performances for you to check out. “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) “Interview With The Vampire” (1994) These are both great films and Tom Cruise is brilliant in both of them, playing very different characters than what you normally associate with him.

Dustin Hoffman won the Oscar for his performance in Rainman (1988), his 2nd best actor Oscar award. Two years prior, Paul Newman won his 1st & only best actor Oscar award for his performance as "Fast Eddie" Felson in the movie, The Color of Money (1986). The Color of Money is a sequel to Newman's 1961 movie, The Hustler, reprising his character of pool hustler, "Fast Eddie" Felson. Ironically, Hoffman & Newman has Tom Cruise to thank for winning their Oscars, as Cruise starred alongside the two actors on both films. Cruise has been nominated for a best actor Oscar several times but has never won the award. Thank you, Madison, for your touching reaction to such a touching film as Rainman.

If you want to see an intense drama from the 70's with great performances from Dustin Hoffman and Sir Lawrence Olivier (considered to be one of the greatest actors of all time) and it also features another outstanding actor Roy Scheider (chief Brody in Jaws) then you might want to watch 'Marathon Man'. And another multiple oscar winning movie full of great performances and probably Jack Nicholson's best performance of his career then you should watch 'One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest'

Hey, Madison - You won my subscription with this reaction. I love this film. What a performance by Dustin Hoffman. Tom Cruise as well. I think his acting matured with this film. I was pleased that you knew Hans Zimmer and were pleased that he was doing the score. There are a handful of composers who, when i see their names, i know i'm about to see a class-A film. Hans Zimmer is one of those. There was a movie, pretty much from the same time, which feels to me, akin to this. If you've not seen it, you might want to consider it for a reaction: AWAKENINGS (1990) Robin Williams, Robert De Niro. I'm not a patreon kind of a guy, so you'll do with that what you will. Glad to see someone react to this movie that, like me, sees the humor in it instead of takin the whole thing so seriously. It can be misinterpreted or misunderstood, but even if it's someone possessin an unfortunate disability.....if it strikes me funny, I'm gonna laugh! Morticians, medics, "graveyard shift" workers and "silent professionals" often call it "graveyard humor". It may be warped or even disrespectful in some folks' eyes, but it's usually either the flip side personality opposite of those who cry as a way to cope, or, like myself, just simply choosin to see the humor in things, even in the face of death. Imagine the joke from the very talented Gabriel Iglesias titled "Indian bank robber". When ye have a "graveyard humor" personality and mentality, instead of gettin on the ground because the guy's pointin a gun at ye, you start crackin up because of his accent or the way he's dressed, etc. Like I say, it can be misinterpreted as cruel, callused or disrespectful, but it's honestly just a better, less stressful, positive way to view the worst parts of life. Enjoyed the reaction as always, Ma'am. Have a goodun and show that sparklin smile every chance ye get!🤠

Damn. The whole airline fatalities thing reminded me of something. I had a dream when I was a kid and it was a school field trip. We were on a plane that crashed into a city. T he next day our school let out early; in a very frantic way. It was 11 September 2001. We were a literal stones throw from BWI; so we got out of school for a week. Can't believe I had the dream. Even told my parents before I left that day; they remembered it before I 3v3n did.

I didn't think I'd like this but I did. I saw it later after it's prime. Thanks for doing a movie hardly anyone else does. 1. Hoffman really did fart in the phonebooth, but being professionals they worked through it 2. The casino would have swapped out the dealer before taking the step of kicking them out. 3. Although the casinos have them the hooker was just working and it's doubtful she turned them in. 4. I suspect Charlie has a bit of his "piece of work" father has just as Raymond got the completely different personalities. (mentally/emotionally)

One of my favorite films of all-time with iconic performances by Hoffman and Cruise (richly deserved the Oscar win and s/gotten an Oscar period). All the feels. Hoffman observed several people with autism and patterned his performance after them with amazing capabilities. Fun fact: Barry Levinson, ,the film's director, plays the moderator at the end. It is indeed a sad fact that back in the day the stigmata of shame to have a relative afflicted with any disability or 'differentess' and institutionalize them is tragic and was very commonplace. Great job Mads (hugs)

Great reaction! One of the things that I really enjoyed about your reaction to this movie was that although you recognized that Charlie was selfish and not treating Raymond properly early on you were able to enjoy yourself watching the movie instead of stomping your feet and shouting about what a terrible person Charlie was like I've seen several other reactors do in phony attempts to show how virtuous and caring they are and it's not enjoyable to watch. You get it. You felt sympathy for Raymond and didn't want to see him mistreated yet at the same time understood Charlie's stress from the potential collapse of his business and his frustration in trying to understand and deal with his brothers idiosyncrasies like not wanting to fly, drive on the highway or go out on rainy days. Again great job, I just subscribed to your channel.

It won several Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman, but I always thought Cruise deserved it more, as he had to transform over the course of the movie, requiring more acting skill. Raymond was difficult as well, of course, as Hoffman had to assume an autistic persona, but he never had to evolve much due to the character's limited emotional faculties.

It affects people differently. Depends on where they are on the spectrum. My ex's son was grown and autistic but very high functioning. When we lived together I got him to cross many uncomfortable thresholds. From going out in public more to him actually seeking interaction. His skill was being able to do tedious work. Like knife sharpening to literal scapal quality. One day he took an entire roll of aluminum foil and used a small mallet and tamped it into a perfect sphere. Then sanded and polished into a smooth mirror like ball. Then to top things off after her & I split up (No one did anything bad just a mutual parting of the ways. We're still really close and talk all the time,) there was an emergency and he actually drove her to the emergency room. I couldn't be more proud of him. He came a really long way from the first time I met him. Anyways, if you liked this movie try out "Snow Cake". It has Sigourney Weaver & Alan RIckman in it. Thanks for sharing your reaction.
