Raymond was always autistic. He was sent to Wallbrook after the mother died and needed constant care. The incident that sent Raymond to Wallbrook because of the hot water in the bathtub while Charlie was a baby. Sending Raymond to a managed-care institute was necessary at the time because not much was known about autism or how to care for a child at home. Wallbrook had doctors, therapists, and social workers who could better manage Raymond's care. Raymond was a savant under the autism spectrum, which means he excelled in certain areas, such as instant recall and high-performance math skills, but lacked socialization that would help him form normal relationships.
@WarrChan
@WarrChan 5 месяцев назад
Sanford felt like he lost both his sons because of Charlie. He sent Raymond away to keep baby Charlie safe, and I think he ended up subconsciously resenting Charlie for it. Charlie probably felt that and ran away all by himself.
@IChooseJesus9091
@IChooseJesus9091 5 месяцев назад
@@WarrChan + Interesting take. You're probably right. But their Dad was seriously lacking in his own communication skills, & in handling inter personal relationships. He should not have kept Raymond a secret, & made Charlie think he was an only child. Also without knowledge of, & a relationship with his brother, and no Mother, Charlie grew up in a vaccuum, with A bit of an elitist & entitled mentality, which he probably got from his father's example, & from being exposed to his fathers wealth growing up. I think Dad must have been somewhere on the spectrum as well, because he apparently lacked interpersonal skills to connect on an emotional level.

Overall the father's relationship with his son's was completely different. With Raymond it was simple and pure. Because of his autism, his needs were very clear and not materialistic. He tried very hard with Charlie to mold him (in his own image)into a successful man. But he found him selfish and immature. He was a hard nose parent who believes you have to earn it. So in the end he believed Raymonds care was far more important,so he left the money to be sure he would be taken care of for the rest of his life. Charlie got the car , because it was a symbol of his short cut thinking, instead of earning it.
@the98themperoroftheholybri33
@the98themperoroftheholybri33 2 месяца назад
@@TheInfo45 it's important to note Raymond is his first born son and was around when his wife was around, Charlie was a baby when she died, so Raymond is the dad's last real connection to his dead wife

So glad y'all did this wonderful film! Both actors did a terrific job, Hoffman's performance is spectacular. I've often thought it would be a smash if they made a sequel today following Raymond & Charlie.
@IChooseJesus9091

Not only was Charlie robbed of a relationship with his big brother, but Raymond was traumatized by losing his little brother, his mother, & his family home. He may not have traditional or neurotypical understanding or responses, therefore unable to carry on a traditional or neurotypical relationship with anyone, but him screaming "hot water burn baby", says that that moment when he lost everything he knew, was seared into his mind & psyche. And he was very traumatized by it. He missed Charlie from that moment on - in his own way.

One of my fave films of all-time. The chemistry between Dustin Hoffman & Tom Cruise is truly dynamic and beautiful. While Hoffman justifiably won the Oscar for Best Actor, Cruise was not even nominated (!) Oscars went to Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay (co-written by Barry Morrow who also wrote an excellent TV movie BILL starring Mickey Rooney as a mentally challenged institutionalized old man that is worth viewing too). The moderator in the hearing is the film's director Barry Levinson who filled the role at the last minute after the actor cast suddenly dropped out. Hoffman based his character on several people with autism (which at the time in the '80s was never explored cinematically nor really known to the general populace until the success of this film's release). Glad you got to see this finally - great viewing guys.

You guys got really excited about Tom Cruise but Dustin Hoffman was a hugely popular, and as you can see, incredibly talented, actor. At the time of the making of this movie I believe Hoffman was the bigger name. Btw Dustin Hoffman won the Academy Award for this portrayal.

There is a film that I have NOT seen any other reactors react to and I believe it may be one of Tom Cruise's very first films!! From 1981 called "Taps"! Also stars Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn! ALL QUITE young, 19 & 21. ALSO HAS George C. Scott!! Pretty good film about a military ACADEMY that gets TAKEN OVER by the CADETS and they go up AGAINST the national guard!!!

Hi guys! Great reaction. Remember: Raymond nearly burnt his 2 yo brother or maybe even younger than that. That's why they put him in an institution. Why didn't the father tell Charlie that he had a brother? Well, he couldn't tell him at first because Charlie was too young, and then things weren't so smooth between Charlie and his dad. And anyway, Charllie left home at 15 or 16. At least, that's what I'm guessing.

Everyone has their thoughts about what if in this great movie. Think of Charlie when we first sees him, this is a male that grew up with a Multi-Millionaire father, mother died when he was 2, the one that was nice to him he saw out of window him leaving, knowing enough to say bye bye Rainman...so knew he was gone, like mother. Then we saw after funeral the story about telling cops car was stold, and left him in jail as teen 2 days ! After watching friends get picked up fast. Think about how Charlie felt, alone, just him and Dad, super rich, yet left early forever, and struggle in work, yet learned from Dad business, so was successful enough to have those cars and not Ford or Buick! That's why he didn't feel love, didn't get it, didn't know how to give it. Dr Brunner was wrong, a long friend of Dad, because Charlie was angry with Dad, Brunner made Charlie just getting the car and roses. If he took Charlie's side, he could get 50/50 to sons, and $1.5M for Raymond was way enough to take care of him with his friend. But you saw, how after a week, Charlie and him changed each other forever, witch is good for girlfriend, that's the Charlie she fell in love with. Recommend Tom Cruise movie before Top Gun, as a HS football player in Pennsylvania in 80s. That acting got him Maverick forever. It's called Make All the Right Moves. You'll like it.

Dustin Hoffman had a magnificent start to his career. The Graduate (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Little Big Man (1970) were all celebrated as great films. One of his most interesting roles was in "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" (1999), where he plays Joan's conscience....or was he something else?

Sanford Babbitt and his son Charlie Babbitt were quite similar. Both were strong-willed, stubborn and unforgiving. They butted heads quite often when Charlie was younger (like during the Buick incident). Once Charlie left home (on bad terms), Sanford may have thought, "What would be the point of telling him about his brother Raymond?"

1. Hoffman really did fart in the phonebooth. Being professionals they worked through it in character. 2. The first indication the change in Charlie beginning to change to me is the farm porch scene. 3. The casino would have swapped out the dealer before taking the step of kicking them out. 4. The hooker was just working and it's doubtful she turned them in. 5. I suspect Charlie has a bit of his "piece of work" father has just as Raymond got the completely different personalities. (mentally/emotionally) 6. Top 5-character development movie. Perhaps Charlie won't be so self-centered and toxic now.

One of my favorite lines in the script is when Charlie's girlfriend is leaving Charlie in the hotel and she tells Charlie that he is using Raymond and her . Charlie stops in the argument and asks Raymond "Am I using you?" and Raymond says "yeah" . Although Raymond doesn't know a lot he knew how Charlie was treating him was wrong . My theory is that there was a time where Raymond was cognitive enough to a to help his dad attend to Charlie. Maybe during a moment that Ray and Charlie were left alone together, maybe during bath time. Raymond may have been running the water for a bath, or tried to and Charlie might have gotten badly scalded by the hot water. The trauma of feeling responsible for that maybe triggered Raymond's condition

Most people don't mention this with the movie, but the decision the father made was not that unusual. You have to realize that when Charlie was burned by the bath, it was mid '60s. The attitude and support services to and for neurodivergent people was far different than today. In fact, the only reason Raymond wasn't institutionalized as a young child was likely due to the family wealth/income, although we don't know the family income back then. We do know the father did become more wealthy, upper middle class at least, by the time Charlie was 16. Even if they had in-home help, Raymond was big and older, and would have been more danger than if they were closer in age even with help. It could be the burning incident happened even with help, just walk out of the bathroom to get the towel and hear Raymond has out Charlie in burning water. There was also shame with having what was then called a "retarded" person in the family. So the way we include and accept people who are different is not the attitudes of mid '60s. There was no need for Charlie to know he had a "retarded" brother. It was protecting him from the shame, giving Charlie a clean and perfect family to start from.
