My father gived me this for birthday before he was killed 3 days later after,it was like a Child for me but sadly it passed away after 1 year! Because i couldn't handle the death of the bug I got next day to one tattoo shop and tattooed my bug picture on my heart! (sry for bad English)
I had to leave a comment after I heard you talk about the pickles: so funny ! I just moved to Japan and had the opportunity to buy a rainbow stag grub... unless it was a hercules beetle grub; I'm not too sure, my Japanese is kinda shit. Anyway, I got my sweet boi in a kinshi jar (since they cost like 300 yen for a 500~700ml jar) and I mounted a heating pad to the side of it ( set to 23~26 C using a thermometer. ) Usually it averages around 24 C. Actually, I found that having the heat pad directly on the jar cooked the kinshi, so now I have the jar in a bubble wrap bag (bubbles touching the jar) and the heating pad is tied back on the side, on top of the bubble wrap layer. It seems to be working so far, although the jar does seem to perspire at the top quite a lot. Maybe it's too warm? It is winter in my area, so my room falls to 5 C sometimes...I changed jars after a little over a month because the last one had developed mould, however I had the heat set to 24~28 C. Hopefully my sweet boi isn't too cold, but at least I know he's alive now after swapping jars lol. I really want to make a nice vivarium for the little bean after he matures. If you have any tips on that, I would be grateful since I can't seem to find much info on beetle care, let alone vivarium builds for burrowing creatures. The only thing I've really decided on so far is an enclosure that opens from the front as opposed to only the top. Do you think having living plants with a light on top would be detrimental to sweet boi? I was hoping that a light would keep the plants alive and the enclosure warm during the winter, since he'll be a celibate boi ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) . I heard that they can live longer without, breeding. Thanks again and nice beetles. : )
They do live longer if you don’t breed them yes. About enclosures, they’ll appreciate a decent amount of substrate to bury themselves in. Besides that, all they need is access to food and a moist enough environment that they don’t dry out. Live plants are very unlikely to work out in a beetle tank as they’ll disturb the roots too much. I have some fake plants in some of mine but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea!
Hello, nice video, I found a lot of useful information on it, thanks! I am also breeding muelleri this will be useful, but I did not find any information regarding winter care ? Do you keep adult Muelleri dormant ? If yes, at which temperature & how much time ? This should increase their lifespan but I was not able to find any informations.. Thanks :D
Thanks! They’re a tropical species so they wouldn’t really go through a cold period in their natural habitat. I keep my adult beetles at room temperature which is a bit lower in winter. That does mean they’re a bit less active during that time though.
Depends on a couple of different things but generally speaking roughly 8 months to a year for females and up to 1.5 year for males. The larvae feed on the substrate, so in my case this is mostly flake soil but kinshi would be better (and more expensive).
Hi so I’m getting my first pair of rainbow stag beetles can I keep them in the same terrarium all the time? Will they get along ok? Sorry I’m new to beetles and don’t want them to get hurt
If they’re both male I’d keep them separate. If they’re male and female they should get along alright but the male won’t live as long if he’s constantly trying to mate so you might want to separate them for that reason. Females tend to get along fine. Best to keep an eye to see if they get along and go from there. Good luck!
Hello! I picked up a rainbow stag larva the other day. It came in a plastic jar filled about 50% with oyster mushroom mycelium. I was told to spray the top of the mycelium every few days to keep it moist. How do I know if I’ve watered too much or too little? Thanks in advance!
Depends on how much ventilation it has really. Typically you want it to be similar to garden compost. Shouldn’t have water leak out when squeezed but should stick together.
Hi I'm new to the game of bettles I have a lot of Ts but these are the first bettles I've had that are not food haha i bought a pair I see the female all the te I ever see the male I've been tempted to try and dig it out thinking it might be dead but today I noticed a small larvae munching away, do I now dig them out and put them In rearing jars I've got small round containers that uget sauce in from kabab shops, would I just put 1 in or get something bigger and put a few in, do u think my males dead?
Not seeing the male could be because he’s too young or it could be too cold. They’re nocturnal anyway so you’re not likely to see them during the day. If it’s rainbow stags, I recommend you keep the larvae individually in containers at least 500 ml but the bigger the container, the less often you’ll need to replace their substrate.
Hi, just ordered a couple of larvae. Going to get my coffee jars tomorrow. How many holes do you put in the lid please? Also, how do you keep the jar at the right moisture? Obviously I guess you can take a bit out at the top and squeeze to test, but below that? How to gauge how much water to spray or add week to week please? Thanks.
It’s a balance. Two half cm holes should be fine for the jars I use. Unless it’s visibly very dry I wouldn’t add any extra moisture but that could be different for you if you keep them in eg a warmer place. It’s better for the substrate to be slightly on the drier side than overly moist. Too much moisture will rot the substrate and that smells foul and I doubt is good for the larvae either! So basically make sure the substrate is good when you put them in and then don’t fuss over them too much. You’ll get a feel for it after you do a couple substrate changes.
Can’t really help you with that as I’ve never bothered to check, I treat them all the same. Males take longer to develop so after a certain amount of time you can deduce it’s a male if it still hasn’t pupated.
