Rainbow Trout Ice Fishing Tips: Flashing Spoon and Tungsten Jig

Ice Fishing for Rainbow Trout and Brook Char has become one of my favorite types of fishing since moving to British Columbia. We have an abundance of Interior stillwaters stocked with trout that grow to huge sizes. These lakes are located at high elevation on the plateaus and mountain valleys, so they freeze in the winter and often have safe ice to fish as early as the begining of November. Safe ice can last all the way up until April usually.
This year has been warm so the ice on many lakes is highly variable and it takes some time and precautions to make sure you stay on the top side. If you are willing to get out on the ice in the first couple months of ice cover you can experience some of the greatest fishing of the year.
In this episode I'll take you out fishing with me on a new lake and exploring new waters. I'll show you how I locate fish and what kind of structure I look for. I'll also take you through the weather changes of the day and how your presentation matters for the mood of the fish.
In this video you will see a great search pattern set up for finicky fish using a flashing hookless spoon to attract fish from the surrounding area and then a dropper tungsten jig below to seal the deal. I will go through the types of bait I use and why I prefer some over others. I'll also show you how to fish this set up using a Marcum, or other flasher sonar. You can also do the same looking down a hole and watching the fish.
During this video I was using the Circle Tackle DEX-027 Rod with a Shinamo Sahara 750FB reel spooled with 8 pound micro ice line. The flasher was a Williams Lures Ice Jig Spoon. The Tungsten jig was an Atomic Waxworm also made by Circle Tackle.

If you would like to get out on the lake ICE FISHING, but don't have anything you may want to look up Campbell Bryk from "Elevated Fishing Adventures". He operates out of Sun Peaks Resort in the Interior of British Columbia and focuses on fully Guided Ice Fishing Tours on the lakes surrounding Sun Peaks and Kamloops.

Oh yeah that was just a rental cabin at Heffley Lake by Kamloops. My family is in Alberta, grew up there and still fish it. Now live in BC.

Great job and thanks for the tips. What size jig are you using? Thanks.
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 2 года назад
Thanks I believe this one was a 5 mm tungsten jig. I usually use 5 mm and 7 mm for trout.

Nice video. I used to live in the interior, love the hard water fishing. We always used a flashing spoon and a simple hook with a piece of deli shrimp. It's a killer combo where bait is allowed.

Yes, certainly is! They sure do like the shrimp.

Great video! I find the same thing regarding weather. During storms or when storms are approaching seems best for all species in my experience.

Thank you! Glad you think so. Apparently people actually catch fish using my tips. A few have even sent pictures. haha... glad I'm not the only one catching fish otherwise I'd feel bad if this stuff wasn't reproducible.

I also notice that the bite will increase or decrease when the sun is bright and then suddenly becomes shaded when a cloud or two rolls in?? Ever see this yourself?? Really enjoy your vids..

Oh yeah 100% truth you are speaking! Cloud cover on a bright sunny day will often trigger a bite to come on. I've seen it with my own eyes on numberous occasions that this fact cannot be denied. Thanks for watching and the comments.

does your sonar flasher mark the tungsten jig as wells as your spoon? my flasher even picks up my swivel sometimes, so I guess it would.
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 года назад
Yes you can adjust the gain so that it pics up whatever you want it to. Tungsten is very dense and sends a great signal even though it is so small.

Let some of the big ones go lol

@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 года назад
Yeah for sure. What do you consider a big one though? What is appropriate size for keeping? I fished for seven days in a row on this lake and this was the only day I kept one limit because I was going home. The other days fishing I only kept one fish on four other days that we ate fresh at the cabin. Many other 16 to 20 inch fish were released for next time! Just so happens this was the day I decided to keep some fish cause I was going home. Took some for the road.
