Lingcod fishing is a total blast! It’s one of the easiest fisheries to get into and frankly one of the tastiest! I would argue that a fresh caught lingcod tastes better than halibut.

Getting set up is easy, you just need a few items that I will list below, and a little bit of time getting rigged up and you are fishing!
1. ROD - Ugly Stik Tiger Casting Rod - bit.ly/lingcodrod
(Tica Big Game 50-100lb is great for halibut and lings)
I like this rod for Lings because it is heavy enough to handle a really large fish, and they are out there, but has enough action that makes landing a ling really fun. I prefer a 7’ rod with medium/heavy action. You can find these at your local tackle shop for around $70.
2. REEL - Penn Squall Lever Drag Reel 30LD (40LD for Halibut)
amzn.to/3bjG1Fl
PENN has been a trusted reel maker forever. I love this reel because it is multi-functional, not too heavy, but tough enough to handle bigger deep-water fish. The grip is super comfortable and easy to handle when you get a large fish on the line and has enough capacity to add a stronger braid for halibut fishing as well. The Lever Drag makes it super easy to set and adjust the drag as you are fishing. You will love this reel!
3. LINE - PowerPro Spectra Fiber Braided Fishing Line (65lb)
amzn.to/2xSG3pY
This stuff is STRONG and great for holding up against a grabby bottom and razor-sharp lingcod teeth. Make sure you get 500 yards of 65lb test when you select this product.
4. TERMINAL TACKLE (the swivel) - Owner American Hyper BB Swivel with Snap (#3)
amzn.to/3cj11gL
I prefer the #3 80lb Owner swivels for lingcod fishing. These swivels are high quality and will not rust even with regular use in salt water. You can also tie directly to your jig, but I find it handy to have a swivel for swapping colors.
5. JIGS - 12Oz Jig Heads
amzn.to/2YQ4xLl
I like a really heavy jig because we primarily fish in the San Juan Islands, where the current can be really strong. These heads will help you maintain a nearly vertical line while getting your bait to the bottom quickly.
6. SWIMBAITS - Curly Tail Grubs or Twin Tail Perch Grub 10”
amzn.to/2LeC61J
Both styles of grubs will catch lingcod and so will a variety of colors. I have had the most success with white and glow, but again, you catch the most with whatever you have in the water the most. I would advise getting a few different colors and fish different colors on each rod. If one color is clearly getting more action than another, match your baits to that color. It can change everyday.

I do want to fish for lingcod, and have absolutely no idea where to start! Thank you for making this video! I love eating lingcod, and my wife and I in Olympia WA just got our first sailboat, so I am super excited to try out some lingcod fishing !! Thanks again for the clear instruction.

I think thats a Penn Deep Sea Reel No. 149. A classic for sure. It can even use carbontex drag washers too, so it still has plenty of life in it, for those willing to go old school.

To everyone out there Topdedge111 had it correct, to not use this knot with braid, it is one of the worst for braid. It will slip and it will slip to the point that the tag end slips through the eye and you will loose the fish and the lure. Other than that, she has it correct. Just use a knot that will hold with braided.

Would love it if you would link a video or let people know what knot should be properly used for braid! Seems like an excellent learning opportunity for all, including me. :)

Use a Palomar knot for braided line

We use a uni knot for braid most of the time, and have never had one slip or pull loose.

Tell me you didn’t tie a clinch knot with braid smh

Sure did! And somehow I have manage to catch several lings with the "wrong" knot! Would love it if you would link a vido or let people know what knot should be properly used for braid! Seems like an excellent learning opportunity for all, including me. :)

@@anglers-unlimited I think for braid just use a Palomar knot strong and very easy to tie

I use clinch knots with braid all the time and I've never had one slip out. You just have to use plenty of wraps.

Yup, it’s all in the wraps, never believed in the palomar knot for any purpose whatsoever, no cushion at all.
