In this landscape photography video I visit the Eryri village of Llanberis in search of fragments of temperate rainforest.
I have recently been fascinated by a book called "The Lost Rainforests of Britain" by Guy Shrubsole (amzn.to/3R6AkRC). Especially since there are some areas of this type of woodland found in my local landscape photography patch. Guy's excellent book explains the how and why of temperate rainforest, and seeks to catalogue the remaining fragments around the UK raising awareness of the need to conserve these delicate ecosystems.
Reading this book, inspired me to try and interpret some of these environments from a landscape photography point of view, and I decided that my first port of call would be Llanberis. Since I don't visit this part of the National Park very often, at least in mid January it would mean that it would be at its quietest. During any other part of the year it can be an extremely busy location and not particularly enjoyable for a landscape photographer who enjoys solitude and tranquility!

Enjoyed your usual approachable style Dave, and very much liked the alternative take on the lone tree. A great edit to emphasise the spreading roots.

The unsung attraction of the Park . I,m fortunate enough to have an abundance of Celtic rainforest environments within walking distance of my front door here in Dolgellau. Played a big part in our decision to move here in the first place. Once again great images and a great take on that tree.

Always good to see you out of your comfort zone mate, in the woodland! The main stars in the woods are generally the trees rather then the rocks though, then then again we don't see many rocks over our way!

@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Cheers mate. Never ceases to amaze me when I'm out with photographers and the first thing they do is get the tripod out and stick a camera on it without really working out where it needs to be. That said, I wouldn't be without my tripod, as I do find that it slows you down and makes you think very very carefully about the composition 😊👍

Cheers for that David, my favourite castle of all, as a kid it would have been wonderful to have that as a playground. Unless things have changed, there are no youth clubs no outreach workers, and no youth shelters in Llanberis.

Thanks for another inspirational video Dave, making sense of woodland is always difficult but you seem to have an eye for it. It is nice to see a different view of the Lone Tree and I also have found the root system intriguing although last time I was there it was surrounded by paddle boarders, wild swimmers and dogs, yes it was summer
@DGriffGallery

Blimey, mate, you were taking a chance go in there in mid summer. Although I suppose it's an opportunity to brush up on your Photoshop cloning skills, getting rid of all the unwanted subject material. 😁👍

An interesting take on the Lone Tree, and a useful mini-guide for the area. I had no idea there was a castle there, or the temperate rainforest. Re: shooting commercial work, it's nice to be able to put on another hat and look at the landscape differently once in a while. 👍

Nice shootin' David. I like the 'feel' of these images, don't know if that's a product of the HR shooting, or the day itself, or that mystic Griff incantation you utter before pressing the shutter button...

Cheers Ted, I think it's probably as much to do with the postprocessing as any other aspect of making my images. I do like to put my personal spin on how they look, and this can take almost as much time as getting to location and firing the shutter! 😊👍

Lovely images Dave! We have a few areas of temperate rainforest near to us here, including Ben Shieldaig. Not sure if that is mentioned in your book, but I might need to pick up a copy, it looks really interesting. Hannah and I went to a talk last year that was given by the woodland trust who manage it, it looks like a wonderful place but I haven't had a chance to explore it with the camera yet! S

Hello Richard, thanks so much for watching. I'm sure you'll soon love the MFT system. I used to shoot with Nikon until about 5 years ago, but the weight and bulk saving for my mountain work has been very welcome and I'm more than happy with the photographic results - most of the time! 😁👍

Shumai David, nice shots, especially the new perspective on the lone tree. I’m up for a few days from Caerphilly next week, I’m hoping to visit some of these woods, anywhere you would suggest for an occasional visitor like me who only has very limited time, thanks bob.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hi Bob, best bang for buck is The Watkin Path, the woodland at the base of the path is rainforest and then you can pop up to the falls with the mountain vistas. Lots of variety all within 30-45 mins walk from the parking. And up and down that valley from the parking is plenty of roadside vantage points: Llyns Dinas & Gwynant and views of the horsehoe from around the Pen Y Gwryd hotel - with excellent beer and food for a pitstop. Or if you prefer a cafe there's the Caffi Gwynant a short walk from the Watkin parking and of course lots of options in Beddgelert 😊👍

Well it's by far the most interesting shot I've ever seen of the lone tree, it's not an image I'm a fan of but your interpretation and composition is much more interesting than the normal view everyone shoots, which quite honestly bores me to death. I spent all my summers as a kid in Llanberis as my Mum was from there, so always have fond memories of playing at Dolbadarn castle, and I love the temperate rainforests, my brothers stepson was studying the one at Trawsfynydd a few years ago as part of his degree, I always love the train journey from Betws to Blaenau as the forest floor at one point is around about eye level, I always found it magical as a kid.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Oh yes, Mark, I really like that train journey to, including the lower parts down the Conwy Valley. It's a pity that the track gets washed away every couple of years, and it shuts down for six months at a time for repairs! 😊👍
@markjones127

@@DGriffGallery Yes that is unfortunate, my Dad was a driver on the Conwy Valley line for 49 years, so I got to ride in the drivers cab as a kid which was amazing.

I learned in the 1960s that there are no "prime" lenses, just foot operated zooms. Sitting on the Southern end of Africa I thought that Savernake Forest was the only old growth forest in Britain. Have I got things wrong?
