I dont understand the motivation of the boss/owner. The guys got permission to film his day, which obviously has an effect on his productivity. But the thought of tossing a guy thats obviously solid and with integrity in a line of work that often lacks both in many consumers eyes. He wasnt really pimping the shop he worked at, but as far as the local community that they service its nice advertising, if nothing else his presence and history on youtube is a nice example that this was a good shop. Seems dumb to get rid of someone like that for anything short of gross misconduct.

@@applepoop10 I don't mean to sound sarcastic but, you might as well flip burgers for the improvement in pay if you can handle the more physically challenging job of flipping burgers that can also be more mentally challenging in assuring that the food is properly cooked and nobody gets sick from lack of attention. I know both the security business as well as the food business and honestly speaking, If you want to get anywhere in security, I suggest applying to Homeland Security, Police services, even for Brinks for that matter because doing nothing but watching servailence monitors or driving around playing pretend a cop will not feed a family. Your choice, do what you need to do to be happy, pay the bills, and budget/ make some sacrifices in order to put something away for the future. Don't take this as a put down, because it isn't, complaining gets you nowhere, why look for pity instead of taking action to be where you would like to be, otherwise it's like you are standing next to the mailbox waiting for the food stamps to arrive, and if you’re okay with that, all that I ask is that people stop complaining about what others are making and put in a little mental and physical effort to get yourself to rise above! I think it probably is. Don't get me wrong -- I love Ray's channel, I love his content, I think he's an awesome mechanic. But he's something of a perfectionist. Those guys tend to always struggle with their managers -- because they're following different imperatives, Managers are all about maximizing profit, perfectionists are all about the quality of the work. It's a tension that can often result in blow-ups. The only way to really resolve it is, like everyone is suggesting, to start your own business -- but that requires a very different skill-set than just wrenching on cars.

That moment of reflection is a good thing to have. I'm the shop foreman and senior tech at my shop as well as being the primary heavy line tech(I'm the odd guy that absolutely loves heavy line). These last few weeks I've had something nagging in my head that I couldn't quite pick up on and it finally hit me this week. I'm mostly nice in conversation, but when working I'm unapproachable and come off as grouchy when I don't intend to be. As a result, starting about Tuesday of this week, I went to all of my techs in a one-on-one as well as the office and apologized to each person and offered to make amends and try to right any wrongs they may have felt. After that, I've made a conscious effort to be more positive, greet my coworkers, and try to be helpful in every situation I can. I hate toxicity in a shop so it really bothered me when I realized I was becoming one of the toxic factors of the place. The week went well. I'm going to continue with that because it really did make for a better week, especially leaving Friday and seeing my coworkers laughing and joking rather than just scatter from the parking lot. That told me that, even if I don't yet know how big my negative impact was, I know that the people that work with me were happy and that made me happy. Ray, best of luck with whatever is next!

Ray has a good head on his shoulders and handles this much like myself would have. The best way to make a statement to a business that yourself and staff can no longer disagree at, is to politely handle everything. Take your stuff, tell them to have a good day and wish them the best moving forward. It provided some life and lesson for you during the time you were there. The next step is to get your own business up and running, hire people that have the drive you want your business to represent, and compete the best way you know how. Eventually, that can lead to much bigger and more fulfilling things.

Oh Ray, I'm so sorry. An employer who can afford to lose someone of your calbre and optimism must have a major business problem . My wife said when I got laid off once `The job you are going to is ALWAYS better than the one you had'. You have an ocean of support and won't go short on advice I'm sure you will be back better than ever. If you are tempted to go solo, be prepared to be working incredible hours.

@@ChandlersFree Yea, the payment structure of Flat Rate sucks and it tends to reward those who are quick not thorough. Then the techs get blamed for jobs that seem half assed just because they are trying to make as much money as possible. Not to mention the disgusting amount of work that has to be put into doing even the smallest of jobs now on newer cars. It's just a train wreck of stuff. Once I got out of trade school I decided I don't even want to touch newer cars lol. And 2) Time and tide wait for no man! Life moves on and as another comment mentioned, it's always better! Great videos and good luck in your next journey and Gid speed. Your own shop!? HMMMMM!? You've got that right! When I was a tech, I left the shop where I worked just in the nick of time... the place was belly up within a year. Piss poor management; 3 brothers, at least one was putting his hand in the till and drinking his lunch off site most days. I left the next shop to start an entirely new career... then they also shut down within a short period of time afterward. You'd think they could carry on without me, but it didn't seem like it. LOL In both cases, they were businesses that were handed down to the owners I worked for by the prior generation. It would've been great if the original owners had instilled a sense of integrity and good business acumen into their offspring.

what is worse is, looking at the last videos, it does seem that there is only 2 or 3 active stalls, and the rest are more like car storage, showing that besides ray, there is at most 2 other mechanics, and that probably from interactions on videos are way less experienced than ray, so, now, there is either one or 2 ok employees, that will be unable to even do so things ray could, so even less services the job can offer, and i doubt they will find a really experienced guy with that many tools, at best the only ones that would apply are new and toolless apprentices, this place is probably done for, more or less

Filming protects the shop and Ray against bogus claims about the scope of the job per the customer's original complaints and the instructions passed along to Ray, and about the quality of the work. If non-mechanics up front are taking the customer's information, and have no idea what's really needed, it's pretty hard for a shop to put good work out the door at the estimated price or maintain a good reputation.

We all have bad days but he can, unfortunately, have I can do and say as I please type of attitude. Workers in NZ or Australia have a far better life than in USA. Healthcare, paid holidays, retirement Uni. We wright up the car to the service manager and they tell something different to the customer and then get big payment, then we do a small repair, car works - on cars with big problems we 'no bid' - on walk aways the 'problem diagnosis' is worthless.

Ray, this hits close to home. 2.5 years ago, I was terminated from a job that I really enjoyed - only problem was the management. They tried to turn the heat up on me and make me quit to avoid paying unemployment. I just dug in my heels, did my job the best I could and waited until they gave up and just fired me. Like you said, you can see the winds of change and you know the end game is coming. Well, after that, I started working for my family business and it's been a big change for the better. Better hours, control over your destiny, good pay and benefits, and the chance to do what I love on my own time. It's never fun to be fired, even if you expect it, but you just take it in stride and look towards making the future one that works best for you. You'll do great, all the pieces are in place.
