When rain falls, it is best to slow, spread, and sink it into our landscapes, for multiple benefits, both to our gardens and the region.
In this class, we will explore practical, low cost approaches to capturing the rain at home. Learn a practical approach that will cover infiltration basins and rain gardens, swales and berms, and rain barrels and cisterns.
Participants in the class will leave understanding:
• Why it is important for us to capture rainwater in our home landscapes
• How to determine which water harvesting approaches are most appropriate for a residential property, based on its specific conditions
• How to analyze the site and soil to ensure capturing rainwater will be safe and effective
• Great plants to integrate into water harvesting garden features

I am planning the landscaping on a piece of property located in the arid region to the east of Marrakech, Morocco. These videos have been invaluable in helping me to understand the issues I am facing, and the means to address them. I am so excited, and I can't thank you folks enough.

Just watched this whole webinar. This was the most informative and articulate video I have ever seen on this topic ... And I've seen a lot. Wow, I feel so much better equipped to deal with my water woes here in Delaware. Thank you so very much for making this available on RU-vid. 🎯 Excellent presentation 👏👏👏

Loving this webinar- from SW FL- so not all pertains to here, but most still does. I’m learning so many new things while reinforcing others. I may be totally wrong- and if not, maybe is corrected later on… but I have very alkaline natural soil here- the Ca+ from limestone and shells ⬆️pH. In this ~1:14:00 a question from live viewer about using concrete- you stated concrete dust will ⬇️pH. I thought homebuilding materials like concrete and stucco etc added Ca+, further ⬆️pH/more alkaline? Why I’ve been removing all I find when digging holes for planting…. If it does ⬇️pH in my alkaline soil? I’ve been so doing the wrong thing and the extra effort to excavate when I find sides of bigger chunks? Some of those suckers have been HEAVY to lift up and out! But anyhow- wanted to ask as I’m still learning so much all the time… and many sites’ facts are contradictory- you obviously know your stuff! Thanks!!! Xoxo from SWFL

Hello. You are absolutely correct. I must have misspoke. Concrete dust absolutely would increase pH / alkalinity. We have alkaline soils here too. Personally, I do not worry about larger chunks of concrete, unless they are in the way of roots, etc. Since solid concrete does not readily break down in the soil environment, I do not think it would have as much impact as concrete dust.

@@CBWCD thank you for your reply:) Yes, the larger chunks, I just wanted them up and out for longer term- roots- new plantings later on. The smaller chunks I find, I still just toss them in a bucket and add them to a back corner where rocks for drainage is helpful. I have a small yard and small gardens, so trying to optimize the best I can:) thanks again😊

This was incredibly enlightening. I am actually in the SF Bay Area, but originally from SoCal and with climate change it is more similar now. Especially helpful was the storage of the water in the ground instead of in a tank. I have to say, your raised patio looks completely natural, like you just took a jack hammer to an existing slab! It is also interesting that you skipped the perforated PVC pipe in your French drain, I always thought that was necessary, but maybe not? Also, please, what are those plants in the front drain area that look like fountain grass?

Indeed, the patio is just a result of taking a jackhammer to an overly large and significantly cracked existing patio. PVC pipe in the french drain will help retain a larger flow capacity in a French drain, and will help move water faster if that is necessary, but is not always needed for the system to work, especially if a wide diameter gravel is used. I'm a fan of keeping it as simple as possible, so do not necessarily recommend it if not necessary. The plants that look like fountain grass are likely alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides), though a bit further back are also deergrass (Muhlenbergia rigens).
