Raising A Wild Baby Bird: Steve the Starling

We found Steve as a nestling who had fallen out of our giant cottonwood tree. We could not place him back and the bird rehabs were too busy.
We decided to help him out and raise him. He was kept in a shoe box, kept warm, and fed wet dog food. We kept him near a window or outside most of the time.
He flew away after about 2 weeks of care. Super grateful for the experience and I hope he lives a long bird life.
(I am not 100% sure he is a starling, but the name is fun!)

please don't leave Steve outside by himself until he can fly really well. I had a wild fledgling I was getting used to being outside, I left him unattended and another bird attacked him and killed him. It really broke my heart.

Timothy Hine..... I am so sorry about your little Starling. I have one that just turned 4. His name is Tweeters. He was not able to be released back to the wild.

I only release the birds after they've grown there tail feathers fully or 1 month has passed. And when I do let them fly. It's with the parents who are usually raising there other babies.

We have two named Stanley and Herman. Two different ages, two different nests but the same type of bird. Herman the younger of the two I chalked up for dead 3x but the little guy keeps going! Stanley (the older one) helps to keep Herman warm and makes sure he eats often. It's a neat dynamic to watch these baby birds. I've been feeding them moist dog food mush with some wet cat food mixed in I also pick green worms out of my garden, get mulberries, blackberries and raspberries to mix in with the dog food. Stanley has graduated to a few meal worms and is working on flapping his wings for flight, he's still a few days away from fledgling stage but we spend all day outside so that when he has proven he can fend for himself he can take flight! This has been a learning experience.... Oh and to anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, they poop ALOT, be prepared to change the nesting frequently throughout the day and Good Luck 👍

Update: Stanley has left and I haven't seen her for over a week now. Herman continues to come down frequently during the day for feedings I imagine I'll be lucky if he's still around for another week. It's been an absolute pleasure caring for the two of them. If anyone happens to spot them Stanley is sporting a black leg tag and Herman wears green, never know where they might end up 💜

We have a baby bird that looks like your Starling Steve. It is even younger than Steve was in the beginning of your video. He fell from his nest twice and then we brought him inside. He is very young but is only eating sparingly. I'm not positive that he is a Starling but he looks just like Steve, only smaller. We are feeding him baby food mixed with kitten food, all soft of course. He eats a tweezer full or two and then sleeps but he doesn't gape much. We live in an extremely hot environment and I don't know if he was injured by being on the ground in over 100 degree weather. At first he didn't do much at all but now he is chirping and eating occasionally. Was it difficult to care for Steve or should we bring it to a bird rescue? Great job with Steve. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

Caring for Steve was almost like having a human baby. The bigger he got the easier it was. I kept him in the shoe box at most times. I would close the lid at bedtime and he would sleep through the night. If you think the bird may need medical attention, definitely take it to a bird rescue. We fed him mainly wet dog and cat food and kept him warm. The hardest part was keeping him wild. Good luck to you!

@@lindsey.wanders Thanks so much for getting back to me. We were going to take him to a bird rescue because he wasn't eating the way a baby bird should eat and he wasn't gaping much. Unfortunately, he passed away just hours before I was taking him to the bird sanctuary. Since he was found out of the nest twice and he wasn't gaping or eating well, I wonder if the parents knew something was wrong with him and they were just letting nature take its course. Well, it was a learning experience and now I know what to do if ever confronted with he same situation. Thanks very much again. 👍

Next x or this x round, you can buy a container of baby bird formula,or a larger bag, 20-35$, u can also just use a spoon and tip it they do the rest, little at a x, mixes easy with water ,just ensure it's warm not hot or will burn his crop

@@andymilic4093 Thanks for reaching out but the other morning when I was about to bring the baby bird to a bird rescue nearby, he passed away. He wasn't eating much and he wasn't gaping much. After watching a lot of videos on baby birds, it seems like they always want to eat or sleep and they gape a lot. I think there may have been something wrong with him and that's why the mama bird kicked him out of the nest twice. Thanks so much for your advice. At least next (if there is a next time) time I will know what to do in a similar situation.

I also raised one, but it was as old as Steve with the first full feathers, when i found it. I called it Charley Parker, as a joke to that constant monotone peeping. Fed it meal worms. I set it loose when it could properly fly. Cheeky bastard took off and never said thanks.😀

I am having trouble getting my starling chick to eat. He won't open his mouth to willingly do so. He's maybe 5 days pre-fledgling. I've tried formula with a syringe & mealworms with tweazers. He's super healthy & strong. I've had him 24hrs & have gently made him eat some but he still won't open his mouth to eat. Help?

I have same problem. I bought a couple jars of baby food..chicken n turkey along with a box of baby oatmeal n a carton of baby sweet potato. Mixed a little of each together. Heated to just warm in microwave. 5 seconds. Took an eyedropper but just scooped up some mixture with the tip of the dropper. He opens his mouth more when I hold him. Then I cover him n let him sleep...he was spotted hopping around outside for days under cars and such. I think the food n rest is what he needs. I hope this helps . The dog food n egg did not work for me. This mixture I made with baby food is more runny. When he opens his bill which isn't often I put tip of eyedropper towards back of his throat. He closes his mouth on it I pull it out n wait until I see he actually swallows. Hydration with moist food is what you're looking for.

I have one the same age. I find mine likes to sleep and when it wakes wants to eat. If the house is noisy it stresses the bird out and it wont eat. We ate walking on our tiptoes and whispering this week.

Steve constantly spit out his food! It took a lot of trying and patience. I tried to mimic a beak sticking food down his throat (gently) at first. Then it go easier to where he would take "bites" on his own. He preferred the dog food to the cat food as well. I hope your birdie is still going strong!
