“I’ll be taking these Huggies and whatever cash you got.” Today we will be watching Raising Arizona (1987) for the first time! Raising Arizona is directed by the Coen brothers and stars Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunt, and John Goodman.
H. I. McDunnough always finds himself locked in a jail cell, but when he meets officer Edwina, he takes a new path. Although an unlikely pair, they get married and attempt to start a family. Unfortunately, Edwina is infertile and the two love birds go to great lengths to kidnap a baby to make it their own which leads to chaos and bedlam!

"You son of a b!tch!" Holly Hunter kicks off one of the best comedic chases in cinema. The entirety of the yodeling chase is top tier from start to finish. As funny as Cage is, I adore Hunter in Raising Arizona. She's cute as a button and her line delivery is just delightful.

When they were starving young artist, Holly Hunter used to room with Frances McDormand, who plays the loud-mouth friend and is married to Joel Coen brothers. Four Oscar awards between two former roommates. That's craziest former roommate story sense Tommy Lee Jones roomed with Al Gore at Harvard. And Robert Duval and Dustin Hoffman roomed together in NYC.

The song she’s singing to the baby is an old American folk murder ballad called “Down in the Willow Garden” and also sometimes known as “Rose Connelly”. The Coen Bros are huge fans of American folk music.

Man...this movie probably hit cable in '89, when I was 7 years old, and it was one of those "if it's on, we watch it" movies at my house. We'd quote it all the time, and my sisters and I used to run around with my mom's pantyhose over our heads. But even then, the one thing that really elevated the movie for me was the depth provided by the more tender moments, like H.I.'s monologues and the dream sequence at the end. Almost like a class clown strolling up to the front of the room and sharing a beautiful poem.

I saw it four times in the movies. It is one of the loudest audience reactions I ever experienced. Coen's knocked it out of the park and brought it home with Hi's dream at the end. Still one of my favorite comedies ever, top ten for me.

The one time that I was in physical pain from laughing so hard was when I saw this movie in a theater -- my stomach hurt from laughing so much, and I must have cried a gallon from laughter. Who would have thought that the lead actors would eventually win a total of SIX Oscars? (Holly Hunter, Nicolas Cage + 4 Oscars for Frances McDormand, and don't forget 11 Emmy noms for John Goodman).

This is one of my favorite comedies,i would like to suggest Wild At Heart(1990) which is another Nicolas Cage movie(before he made action films) which also stars Willem Dafoe and is Directed By DAVID LYNCH.

GREAT suggestion, and a great entry point for Lynch. (although with these guys, "Elephant Man" or "Blue Velvet" would also be good ones. And THEN hit the super wild ones: Eraserhead, Mullholland Drive and Lost Highway.) But yeah, I actually associate this one and "Wild At Heart" somewhat together, although he had good stuff in between ("Vampire's Kiss" being one). But DEFINITELY "Wild At Heart" would make a GREAT reaction from these two!!!

Saw this opening day. This back when Cage was cool and only making quirky indie films, before the dark days, before Bruckheimer. This was the Coen Bros second film and were a thing like QT in the 90s, so the theater was a sold out crowd. It’s still one of my favorite films of all time.

Lenny Smalls was played by Randall "Tex" Cobb, a boxer who fought Larry Holmes for the world heavyweight title in 1983, which explains his flattened nose (he took a lot of punches). He later became a kickboxer -- so he didn't have to be taught that spinning kick he used on H.I. This wasn't his only acting gig. Cobb has a sense of humor that's as warped as the Coens'. It came out in interviews. He was perfect for the role.

When I was like 11 in '98, I watched my VHS copies of Raising Arizona and The Rock religiously. Raising Arizona is the one movie that everybody in my immediate family LOVES

I love that! It really is a movie that has broad appeal, and always did. The style and tone with the cinematography, acting and music is so weird and edgy....it definitely appealed to the art house circuit. But it's almost wholesome and family-oriented (and hilariously funny) that everyone else could enjoy it - which is what happened when it started playing on cable all the time.

The song that Holly Hunter is singing "I did murder that dear little girl" is a real song. The instrumental music you hear the whole movie in the background is this song. It is a very dark song! It talks of a man that is getting drunk by the river with his girlfriend. then he kills her (why? no explanation other than he is drunk) and then throws her body in the river. Then the rest of the song tells of his trying to get his dad (apparently, he is rich or has influence) to help him avoid hanging. But his dad tells him he cannot help him. In the end he is hanged for murdering the girl, I think her name is Anne Marie. I think the name of the song is "Sweet Anne Marie"? Holly sings her name in the song. The interesting twist about this song is I think it was written about 300 years ago. A lot of really old songs are surprisingly very dark (about death and murder). Whiskey in the Jar is another example of an Irish folk song about 200 or 300 years old that is very dark (about robbery, murder, and another hanging). It was remade by Thin Lizzy in the 70s, and Metallica around 2009.

A friend of mine always told me that the yodel in this movie was the only thing louder than his ex. He said when they would argue he would pop this movie in and crank the yodel up on the surround sound. 🤣

The bounty-hunter, Randall "Tex" Cobb used 2 b a neighbor of mine n Nashville n the '90's. I met him when he did "Married With Children" episode & "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." He'd been n many classic films at that point, & had loved him n this! He still boxed smaller bouts at the time, after he almost got beat 2 death n the ring by legendary boxer Larry Holmes on national tv (should b on here/YT?), causing the GOAT sports announcer, Howard Cosell 2 retire from boxing. He was a martial champ b4 he tried his hand at pro boxing. I'd c him jogging past my window every morning where he'd stop & punch the trees b4 carrying on. Poor trees!😅 He was a really great neighbor & we'd shoot the shit from time 2 time. Thought he was dead 4 yrs, but turned out was his son that died & he moved back 2 his hometown Philadelphia. Hope he's well!🙏❤ "Uncommon Valor" prob his best & biggest role? This my fave Coen Bros & Cage! Wish Cage did more comedy back n the day! Great choice! Thanx! See ya! ✌😎❤

Guess where he trained martial arts? Anyway, he was a great a guy. We'd chat from time 2 time, but I never wanted 2 ask him about Hollywood since everybody that recognizes him prob asks. I'm 50 & prob saw that fight, but I was so young I don't remember. Btw, "All my exes live in Texas!"😅 I lived in Dallas in '90 & '96, & 4 some reason there were a LOT of Texan gals running round here.😁 Cheers from NashvilleTowne! 🎸 🎶

That's fantastic, thanks for sharing all that! As far as Cage doing comedies back then? He did tons! "Moonstruck" was a comedy, "Vampire's Kiss" was definitely funny, he started off in "Valley Girl" which is very funny....he was subsequently in "Honeymoon In Vegas" and although I wouldn't describe "Wild At Heart" or "Peggy Sue Got Married" as straight comedies, he's hilarious in them. He's even funny in "Birdy". It was in the 90s he started doing all the action stuff. In the 80s, he was known for THIS, and stuff like it.

I, of course, remember his bit part n his 1st film, & 1 of my all time top 5 movies (mainly for sentimental reasons), "Fast Times At Ridgemont High." & now I remember "Valley Girl", but thought it was B-Rate & didn't care 4 it back then. But compared 2 much of today's crap, I might appreciate it more now? I remember "Peggy Sue Got Married" & "Moonstruck" now, but as a teen/ young man, they seemed more female/romance oriented, & I didn't grow up n the '50's & wasn't Italian (😅), so even tho I loved me some Kathleen Turner & Cher back n the day, those 2 never appealed 2 me. "Vampire's Kiss" sounds familiar, but don't think I even saw it? I did love "Wild At Heart", but "Honeymoon In Vegas" depressed me the 1 time I watched it. Never heard of "Birdy"? Saw some of his others, but nothing really stood out 2 me. I did like the more recent 1 he did w/ Russell Brand? Don't remember what it was called, but it was good if u haven't seen! It's always good 2 re-visit old crap from yesteryear cause it can always turn out 2 b ur jam 2day! Hope ur doing well, Tic Toc Melody. Thanks 4 the input! 🙏❤

I always thought Leonard Smalls was HI's father. Thats why they have the same tattoo(HI might remember it from an early memory and got it when he was older. And why Smalls has what I think ar HIs bronzed booties. I may be crazy.

Oh my god, I'm so sorry about your CAR being stolen! Are you kidding me? Holy moly, I'm SO sorry to hear that. I loved this reaction , though, this was a movie that I immediately thought of when I first discovered your channel and you certainly had the same reactions as I did when I saw it. What do I think of "Raising Arizona"? This - and their first movie "Blood Simple" are the ones that put them on the map, they blew us away when they came out (those of us who saw them!). After this, I didn't care for their movies too much until "Fargo". And after that, I'm not a big fan of most of their subsequent movies. I like "Burn After Reading" and "A Serious Man" (which I don't think would make a good reaction video, necessarily). But for me, the Coen Brothers ARE "Blood Simple", this movie, and "Fargo". If all they had ever made were those three movies, or even just THIS movie, we'd still be talking about them. Just the chase sequence in the middle of the movie, it's something out of a silent movie. And the music, the cinematography (which was TOTALLY groundbreaking).....I don't know another comedy like this.

R.E. the "worldbuilding" comment: The Coens definitely love to pick a certain slice of American culture and explore it to its fullest in each of their movies. Kind of one of their trademarks as "auteurs". (check out some info on auteur theory if interested!) Usually its some region, sometimes its a region + a time period that they delve into. Sorry to hear about your car - what a crazy coincidence!

In every Coen brothers film there is a man that yells. I forgot the reason why but it's sort of an unnoticed trademark of the Coen's. A Serious Man from 2009 is the only Coen brothers film I haven't seen, which for some reason is pretty much unknown by most people, even fans of the Coen Brother's films. I keep meaning to watch it but I never do. Anyway, they have a very unique style to their films that really separates them from other directors.

"Everybody has a gun!" Arizona has some of the most lax gun control laws in the United States, to the point where it's often joked that you can't claim residency in the state unless you own at least one firearm. It's one of the most sublime jokes in the whole movie, and the whole movie is freakin' hilarious!

There's only a few Tarantino movies that I haven't seen (The Hateful Eight, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and Jackie Brown). Sarah on the other hand has only seen Kill Bill Vol. 1&2 and Jackie Brown!

There's a _lot_ more to this conspiracy theory to explain the film...but Leonard Smalls _is_ Lenny Small from Of Mice and Men...grown to manhood in Hell and returned to take his "grandson" back. IE Hi is Lenny's son, still dreaming of a better life. *First* "sin" Smalls commits in the film _is_ killing a rabbit. Okay then?
