Hey friends, welcome back to 1870s Homestead! Today was an exciting day as we picked up our new pigs: Hereford and Berkshire crosses. It was a long 6-hour journey, but we’re thrilled to have them home safe and sound. We’ve got them settled in a new paddock this year, complete with a 35-gallon nipple waterer and a choice feed system so they can eat whenever they're hungry. A tip for new pig farmers: spread a little peanut butter or jelly on the nipple waterer to train them quickly!
To keep them from rooting under fences, we're using a single strand hot wire electric fence powered by a Premier 1 solar energizer. The pigs are already getting used to their new home, digging and rooting around. This is our fourth time raising pigs, and we decided on three this year because our boys wanted to split one. Our previous pigs were Tamworths, Idaho Pasture Pigs, and Red Wattles. We’ve learned so much with each breed and can’t wait to see how these turn out.

Beautiful pigs! I love pigs... I even have a tattoo with 2 pigs together on my shoulder. My sister had 2 acres with blackberry bushes and lots of apple trees so we raised 6 pigs and our family shared all the meat. The last couple of months before butchering we fed them a lot of apples. The meat was fantastic!!

I remember the last time you had pigs. I can't remember if you did this or not but putting a burnt log that is charcoal will a lot of time heal a sick pig. Jason at Sow the land had one that stop eating a losing weigh. He put the charcoal log in the their pig started eating it and it got well. Not saying it will work in all cases but you might want to try it if one gets sick. Pray they will stay health and grow. Oh their noses are called snouts.

They're so cute! Is that all they do is eat?? Okay, so we raised pigs when I was a kid, but they were mean. If you stood up on the fence panel, they would try to bite your toes off 😄 My brother dropped his Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car over the fence and they ate it but I wrote a story about it and won a blue ribbon in school, LOL. I think I was in 5th grade. Good times on the farm 😄 We always had 4-6 calves and I loved feeding them. That meat though, nothing like it.

You won't be sorry you bought that breed. The meat is delicious and not a lot of excess fat, just enough to keep the meat juicy. I've had several breeds over the years and my favorite was the Berkshire /Duroc cross they produced huge hams and the flavor was off the charts.

Good looking little pig pig pigs. I raise Berk/GOS crosses. Adding in a bit of Duroc this year to hopefully speed up the grow out. Man oh man is there nothing like that bacon! We process ours right here at home and I'm teaching myself how to make all the things. Bacon and sausage are the easiest, but I want some of those fancy pants meats that hang for a couple of years...oh my...salami. Yes. Maybe this year!

I love that you guys raise pigs for your kids too! Whenever I put food up and get a beef or a pig I always get enough for my kids families too.. it’s just what we do. I’m kinda bummed bc when I got my last pig I thought I’d make my own bacon and I messed it up uggh.. I’m on that journey kow

Wow those pigs are making short work of rooting up the ground. The next pasture may need to come before too long at this rate. Great if you want to expand the garden, it will already be pre-dug.

We’re 8 minutes from west branch 🙋‍♀️ But anyway I don’t know how you guys do it we got chickens and turkeys for the first time ever and I’m already in love with my turkeys even though they drive me nuts 🫤 so I can see I’ll probably be pardoning them this year for thanksgiving 😐 my husbands not happy with me😬 so I do see raising any other animals for food I guess we’ll have to find a farmer to meat from.

We raise beef cattle in SE Mo. just good pasture, water source, worm and vaccines. We keep a bull but can AI or rent a bull seasonally for breeding.

I’m excited for you to get pigs again! After describing the way they taste, I want to get some too! Hmm…can you raise them to taste good if you don’t have pasture for them? I have an area that used to be my raspberry patch that’s probably 40’x40’. Do you think that would be big enough for a couple pigs for the summer?

You have plenty of land and a tractor. Is it worth it to grow corn, sorghum, alfalfa to help feed the animals? Looks like harvest day Nov-Dec. You can borrow the chicken camera and put it over there.

The video is messed up about 5 mins in and won't play. It looks all jumbled like huge pixels and then just gets stuck. The same thing happened on your asparagus planting video. Very weird because this does not happen to videos from any other channels I watch and does not happen to all your videos.
