Raising Phidippus Carneus Spiderlings

I rehoused a gravid jumping spider that was prowling my living room into a small vivarium just as winter was setting in last year. It laid an egg sac that hatched about 80 spiderlings the first week of January. This is a look at the caretaking operation so far.

I really enjoy watching spiders. The Phidiippi in the backyard are quite friendly. Since I live near the coast in Central California, the climate is moderate, and although the jumping spiders largely disappear in the winter, there are a few that pop up all year long. Therefore I don't feel bad about leaving the Johnson's Jumpers to find their own niches for the winter. Your video is wonderful. but there seems to be so much work involved. I believe leaving the spiders outside is probably best for them and more enjoyable for me. Well done. Thanks for sharing.🕷🕸

Thanks for that comment, Leanna! I agree, that was a LOT of effort. I'm glad for the chance to try it at least once, but that was enough:) Earlier this winter, when I found another mamma spider on my kitchen ceiling, who looked ready for egg laying, I took her out to the garage. At least temperatures shouldn't be as bitter in there with plenty of places to seek shelter and let the young ones find their way.

Except that you left a huge water droplet in the deli cup. With the book lungs on jumping spiders, you can kill them that way. Be sure to either get all the droplets of water on the paper towel, or lightly mist the lid of the deli cup.

Once the weather warmed up, I released them into the yard. There were loads of adults around the house the rest of this year and I hope a few of those were the ones I set loose out there.

I am anxiously waiting for my spiders sack to hatch! Once hatched and I transfer the slings to individual enclosures, how often to recommend this feeding routine? Thank you for this video, it is the most informative and least chaotic feeding video I’ve found! TIA

Thank you! I'm glad the video was helpful. I'm not a seasoned pro. These were my first batch & I just released them back into the yard last week-except for one which I think I'll hold onto. I'm glad to have cared for them through the winter, but it definitely required a lot of time for each food, water & cleaning session. I got by with feeding/watering a couple times a week...which was the most I could manage. I'm sure they'd be happy with getting fed every couple days & probably grow faster if you can manage. And if you want, they also seem to be fine cohabitating all together through at least their first moult outside the egg sac before they start disappearing to their siblings. I did start using larger balled-up paper towel pieces so the water source stayed wet longer. Hope you get your hatch soon and enjoy caring for the little critters!

Great video! P. carneus is a species I hope to keep…I have kept several P. audax and P. regius, have heard P. carneus is even more bold! How are the little slings doing now?

Thank you and sorry about the delay - this is the only species I've had experience keeping so far. We seem to always be in catch & release mode when various ones find their way into the house. They're definitely very attentive and in exploration mode much of the time. The red abdomen cause flinch responses with visitors until we explain their harmless but awesome qualities. I just released all but one of the juveniles back into various spots outside .... and imagine one or two will probably find their way back in at some point. I guess I need to do a better job weather sealing my home:)

I thought if they don’t mate. It will be infertile sacking. Are these jumping spider able to lay eggs even w/o sex

Hi, yes, if the spider doesn't mate, then the egg sac would be sterile. So this spider must have mated before I captured it in my living room (I didn't want to toss it outside in the freezing temperatures).
