After hatching eggs from the grocery store, we decided we wanted to grow our little quail farm. This time around we purchased fertilized eggs from Oasis Quail Farms on ebay and explain more about the process of moving them to the brooder and the breeding pens after hatching. To see more information about the incubation phase, please check out our first video here: • Can You REALLY Hatch Q...

Unfortunately we live in an area with lots of coyotes nearby. Quails are not like our chickens, which are free range and return to their pens at night. Quails roam and fly off and would unfortunately get eaten :( However we are working on a large quail pen for these little guys to run around in so they won't be in the breeding pen for long :)

Go back and listen to it. He said when those birds crammed in those factory farming style cages make eggs, then he will hatch them and then those birds that don't fit with the others will go in the pen he is building. (My guess is every bit as crowded as the commercial caging.) Never the sun on their backs or the grass under their feet. Sad. I am no vegetarian or vegan: I just HATE factory farming and make it a point to buy organic or certified free range when I can. Grass fed beef, too.

@@lmb2333 This particular species of quail like to be crowded in with their covey. It makes them feel safer and these birds have no skills whatsoever of protecting themselves. They are not a native species anywhere. They are bred from 5 or 6 different species to grow bigger and lay more eggs than your average quail. They can't fly more than 10 ft or so because of their heavy weight so can't fly away from predators very well. If they are given too much room they become territorial and start to peck each other. Once there is a blood spot on one of them they all attack that one and kill it so you don't put these quail in a cage with a lot of room if you want them to live. We too raise these types of birds and we feed them organic and if one looks like its not feeling well we give them oregano tea and pumpkin seeds which can cure just about anything that makes them feel bad. they have pretty colored toys in their cages that they like to play with and we have a radio playing in their barns with all their favorite types of music. I’m not sure about quail eggs but with chicken and Guinea fowl eggs when you set them for hatching it’s called lockdown. This means that you set them up to hatch and leave them to hatch. Every time you open the lid you let dry air in which causes the outer membrane to go all rubbery ounce the chicks have cracked the egg to start to hatch. When I first started to incubate eggs I opened the lid of the incubator and out of 32 eggs I was incubating I ended up with 3 that hatched. I would have thought that you would get 70% or better hatching. I hope this helps in the future mate.

You interfere with the hatching birds too much. Leave them until the complete hatch has finished and the birds have dried off. Putting them on that smooth paper is a bad mistake. It will straddle the feet. I think that you really need more experience in hatchery procedures before putting informative videos up on RU-vid. Sorry to be negative but people are seeing this and will copy bad hatchery practices. I have thirty eight years experience in Quail, Broilers, Layers and Turkey production.

Exactly how much moisture is required to be in the incubator? Or better question, how much moisture is required to hatch an egg?
@gregs605
@gregs605 5 лет назад
You need to keep the humidity at 40-50%, it varies depending on the type of eggs you are hatching. You should increase it for the last few days, it softens the shell membranes and makes it easier for them to hatch. Duck eggs need higher humidity, chicken, quail and pheasant need less.
@plother4242
@plother4242 5 лет назад
@@gregs605 Actually quail need more humidity than chickens due to the thick membrane. If there is not enough humidity the membrane turns leather like and sicks to the bird making it almost impossible to get out of and many die if that happens. We keep the humidity around 80+% for our quail and lower for our chickens for the last 3 days. The first 14 days we keep it around 55% to 65%. We have to remember that different incubators can be different in the way they hatch. We have to treat our eggs in our GQF cabinet incubators different than we do in our Rite Farms cabinets. Each one holds temperature and humidity differently. That could be why you keep your incubator at a lower humidity than we do.

@plother4242
@plother4242 5 лет назад
@@cloakanddagger1 I agree. That is the best way. The only thing I would add is that if you are in a colder climate and putting them in an outside cage be sure that they are fully feathered which could take little longer and have a little place for them to go in to get out of the weather and cozy up. Its usually the top of their head and their belly that feather out last so people should be sure to check those places for feathers. Also, if you are putting them in an outside cage make sure the cage will not allow any predators to get in. Raccoons, opossums, fox, coyotes, wolves, even the neighbors cat or dog and many other wild animals are major predators for these little birds. Since these birds coo and talk all night the predators are definitely aware that they are there.

If you put their feed on paper plates for the first few days, they can access the food much easier. Just tap it a few times with your fingernail when you put them in to attract them to it, and they will figure it out from there. This is how a mother quail would show her babies where/what to eat in the wild, it's a feeding instinct they are born with. Also, as another commenter noted, you should not use smooth paper in the brooder. You should use something that is textured, like paper towels, then shavings. They need to be able to get traction to walk/run so they do not develop spraddled legs.

I'm telling you for a fact we need to rethink intelligence completely, At fifteen days old my quail chicks are displaying huge amounts of intelligence that actually surpasses that of a puppy or cat far older .. The issue that blinds us is when we perceive instinctive intelligence... instinctive intelligence is used to unify the behaviour of young in the animal kingdom. More often than not its accurate to their normal environmental conditions. yet we have removed these species from their normal environmental conditions so from our perspective watching them struggle they appear slow... 2000 years is clearly not enough time to breed out those instinctive impulses that increase their chances of survival in their natural environment...
@chrislecky710
@chrislecky710 2 года назад
This is what is actually occurring. There is a feedback loop between the mother hen and her chicks. The mother hen and her chicks inherit a generic range of instinctive impulses,, she has a high numbers of young so that those instinctive impulses can be updated, as her brood experiences losses from accidents illness and being preyed on by predators she learns what extra lessons her chicks need to adopt to increase their chances of survival.. it's the reason young chicks appear to have a death wish, jumping from a high structure likely to cause injury for example ensures the hen is less likely to lay her eggs on a cliff face the next time round which increases the chances of that species survival because those lessons are inherited instinctively... Just goes to show without a proper understanding what we see as dumb might actually be pure genius.....
@shithelp5797
@shithelp5797 4 года назад
You shouldn't open the incubator (1) while chicks are still wet and (2) while other chicks have pipped their eggs. Hatched chicks can survive just fine for 2 days without feeding, and opening the incubator too soon will trap several pipped chicks in the eggs, thereby lowering your hatch rate.
@chrislecky710
@chrislecky710 2 года назад
The reality is the chicks are training the hen to accurately assess the environment before laying her clutch of eggs... and the hen is teaching her chicks how to navigate the environment their in using her experience,, together it creates a feedback loop that increases their chances of that species survival.. IE they will continue jumping off your table until you learn to put them somewhere else more safe...instinctive impulses are developed between the interactions of mother and young not learnt or taught.. Turns out birds are one of the most adaptive intelligent species on earth and their survival instincts are outstandingly sophisticated and complexed...

@ForgottenHillbilly
@ForgottenHillbilly 4 года назад
Hey man not trying to tell you what to do or anything but if you will stop opening your hatcher so much you will get a much higher hatch rate. That last 3 days it's critical to keep that humidity and 25% higher then the previous days. Lowe humidity will cause shells too hard for chicks to peep as well as cause chicks to dry out too much that where in the hatch process and they get stuck and die. Usually they do what is called lock down that last 3 days and do not open the incubator or hatcher but make sure it has ample water. Your chicks will be perfectly fine and there is no need to get them out right away. They pull the excess yolk inside of them and can live for 3-4 days just on that thus that is why it's safe for hatcheries to ship chicks via mail. I have built incubators and raised all manner of poultry for 30+ yrs and I enjoy seeing other people have interest in it as well. To each their own but just some friendly advice. Happy hatching!

I built a coop for the quail love it, but I built timber up on the sides and back, so they have privacy and feel safe. Put some long grass in there also for cover. I only have 3 males in one part of coop and 2 females and one male in other part of coop. Waiting on 3 female chicks to grow up. Also have 2 females and a male in bottom of an aviary. The quails in coop are very content and happy but I think the privacy is the reason they are so content in a coop.

Poor quails being stuffed into those cages. Why can't you give them a big pen to run around in? They live outside on the earth and in the fresh air. Stop treating them like personal egg machines and see them as sentient creatures that deserve better.

Can you incubate the eggs in a normal incubator used for chickens? If so what temp would you recommend it be set on?

I find this interesting but I don't get the point. Do you eat them or sell them? What's the point of creating more quail?

Sucks for the quail to be stuck in a cage for life. Glad to see by the end they are trying to work something better out for them.

I bet if you would stop opening your bator that you would have a better hatch rate.

I feel bad that they live so long as adults In those cages. Don't their feet hurt from walking on those wire floors? I find your videos interesting.But I hope you will think about their happiness long-term. What nature would provide them is best.
