I love how you raise both meat and pet rabbits! Very inspiring. Thank you for taking all the time to make these videos :)

I used to raise Giant Chinchilla rabbits for meat. I foraged 90% of their food. I raised them indoors as a project to prove that rabbits can be raised in an apartment in a city. 1 Buck and 4 Doe. 400 lbs. of meat in 1 year.

If only the big companies handled their meat livestock like you do.
@iamtenzin4409
@iamtenzin4409 7 лет назад
Amen to that. What really needs to happen is far better enforcement and oversight in the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act and the inclusion of small stock like rabbits, poultry, and fish to ensure the quality of care is far improved. If you eat meat - buy from a small producer like the owner of this video who really cares for his stock.

I am sorry but a humane way to kill doesn't exist, it's just to ease yourself.

Yes , veganism started because of the mistreatement of livestock in these companies , death is unavoidable to these animals , but i`m glad he is very kind to them.

A humane way to kill does exist. Several humane ways, as a matter of fact. A humane death is a painless death, and painless deaths are very much achievable.

Hop-poop, hop-poop is what my house rabbits did. Nice collection John. When I was younger I had a couple rabbits we house trained. They finally got to be to much when I discovered they were peeing on my cassette tape collection under the bed. We lived in the mountains in Utah at the time and they would love to run around in the snow and then come to the door to be let in. Rabbit's are very trainable, except the hop-poop and peeing thing.

I have just stumbled upon this video after watching your other videos about the wire shelving cages (which we plan to use with our own rabbits when we move them into an actual building). Sorry that I am commenting on an older video. However, I do want to mention one thing about your statement of the New Zeland. There are actually a few varieties, often considered different breeds, of New Zealand. Your doe is a New Zealand White, probably the most common and desired ones out there. But there are also NZ Black, NZ Blue (fairly new), NZ Red (rarely seen in the US), and NZ Broken. Whites are the most desired of the NZ varieties because when butchered you can not see their fur as much on the meat like the other varieties. In reality, NZ Whites were a happy accident and just started popping up in litters of mainly red kits (when NZ Reds where commonly seen in the US). Now they have become a very popular variant, and is often the commonly known appearance of this lovely breed of rabbit. I breed NZ Black and Brokens, but wish to add a few whites to my herd soon as I just love the variety. I do have a carrier of the gene, a lovely charlie black doe, and am hoping to get them! Anyway, great videos. They have helped me a lot in the improvement of my own rabbit housing and care. Seeing this one makes me want to get Mini Rexes to breed for pets, and they are a goregous breed.

I know these are your older videos and you probably won’t see this but I just been going through the list and catching up as a semi new (about a yr) sub. Hope that’s ok? I don’t always comment but I do “like” and watch the commercials. Those are some BIIIIG bunbuns! They’re all really cute even the meat rabbits who, btw are as big as my dogs! LOL I’m fairly new to all of this and am interested in rabbits as a meat source. Your channel is VERY helpful. I do grow a garden and have done that most of my life. My grand parents dad and uncles were cattle farmers and my granny always had chickens. I’ve just not done it all for myself. Now that I’m disabled and can’t work I gotta find ways to make it. You’re channel really helps encourage me as well as gives me the knowledge I need. Plus you’re a dang good cook! LOL I tried your cinnamon roll recipe and “sweet heaven help me,” they were AHHHMAAAAZING!! LOL So, TFS. I really appreciate what you do to help others. God Bless you and yours ~Lisa

Thanks John. Nice video. Good intro to raising rabbits. Anyone looking to increase their self-reliance and self-sufficiency should investigate raising rabbits. New Zealand White is pretty much the standard for meat production, but other breeds should not be ignored. Champagne D'Argent are fantastic meat rabbits with that silver fur, too, which once was highly sought after. There are, also, Creme D'Argent which are a very pale yellowish color with an orange undercoat, and good meat producers. Californian and Florida White would round out my top five choices for meat production. Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits, 4th Edition, by Bob Bennett, which you can get at Amazon - or, perhaps, at your local library - is a good, concise and well written place to start learning the how-to of rabbit raising.

Watching your videos like a villain now. W/this one, I am curious: Had you ever slaughtered a rabbit before you began this lifestyle? If not, how did you learn to do it? What were the challenges? What were some of the mistakes you made (if any)? How do you like to cook it? How long does it keep? Do you freeze it? Sorry I'm all over the place but we're looking for the best way(s) to step slowly into the homesteading lifestyle. So far I'm leaning towards rabbits and goats and I love your videos. Thanks so much!
@jakethemistakeRulez
@jakethemistakeRulez 8 лет назад
+Dorothy Validus I notice your question was not answer so I wanted to partially take a crack at it because I find it interesting. I've grew up in western MA around lots of farms and know plenty of people who live this very way including myself to some extent though more on orchards etc. I would have to say that he ^ probably grew up on a farm or around them. I highly doubt for some reason that he grew up in Brooklyn and "decided to learn to live off the grid lol. So here's my belief/opinion "homesteading" isn't a lifestyle it's life. It's actual real life. Until the big oil industries and big business came along this is how you live and survive. You're asking how to get into this ask yourself how did you get out? Society dragged you out of it with big war profiteering oil business and rob you in labor and taxes. Now you don't know how to live. They didn't teach you that in school did they? This was no accident. Anyway it's hard to kill a rabbit for the first time but they are an animal that has lived and died in it's place in the foodchain for who knows...millions of years? Learn to do it and do it. I think more people should learn to be self sufficient in case they get us in so much debt we become a 3rd world country...which will happen if it keeps going the way things are now. What are we at -20 trillion now? Such a big number people don't seem to believe it. Well believe it...that's a crap load of money and we owe it because they spent our money to fight their wars. Anyway imagine all the people who've never slaughtered a chicken before because someone else does it for them...imagine them getting turned away from the grocery store. I don't want them all showing up at my door. If you don't know how to do this you are lacking basic life skills and are far too dependent on the state.

The mini rex that you were holding, if she has a brownish color around her eyes, ears, and belly and she white underneath on her belly, she could be an black otter, but if she only has the brown around the ears then she might be a cross between a solid black and a black otter.

Well, it's less about masking than it is about how those 5 genes for the two colors are expressed. Some show incomplete dominance in the proteins that are produced by the sequence. It's certainly a lot more complicated than the fruit flies I studied in college.

if ur rabbit is spayed or neutered there should never be a smell, unless you aren't keeping the litter box clean, if you don't it's pretty much equivalent to pooping and peeing in a toilet and never flushing.
