Very interesting. Why would they couple the wheels that way instead of having a single wheel?

The only reason I can think of now is it helps to take up backlash and prevent second hand stutter similar to the Vostok. They both have indirectly driven second hand pinions. The Vostok uses a spring to 'load' the pinion axially.
