I tried an experiment similar to Ralfys. Two parts Green Spot Irish Whisky. One part Ardbeg 10. I found it Wonderful. Nose was smoked ham. Brine. Sea notes. Of course smoke peat. Taste very similar. I would like to say this to Ralfy this too, but don't know how to do this. Just thought I would mention this combo to you.

G’day from Tasmania Ralfy. I’m sitting here with a dram of Ardbeg 10, while watching this (again). I’m so glad I paid attention to how much water you added, which is a little more than I ordinarily would have. Wow, it opened it up so much more. I can’t thank you enough for the help you’ve given me so far on my whisky journey.

Ah, there's not better way to start a new year! Many moons have passed and it still amaze me the immense amount of knowledge, genuine and relaxing entertainment you can get by a ralfy's review. It's always like being with him in the bothy, a refreshing malt moment as a joyful scotch mist appearing in the glass. So, we salute you with a Happy Malty 2017, ralfy, and congrats for your record.

Mr Ralfy, I am very happy for your record (speed demon over here...😋😉) and congratulations for such a great achievement! I have to confess: I have been an “internet hog” since dial-up and an RU-vid viewer from its beginnings (don’t watch TV) but I can say that from all people I got to know on line over the years trough this amazing platform you are the one I respect and cherish the most! I wish I would’ve lived in Europe (although I come from there) so I can come and visit with you and share a delightful blended dram you so kindly helped me create and understand. Slainte my friend! I wish you many more years of health and prosperity!

I’ve just tried my first dram of Ardbeg before watching this. Amongst the wonderful smoke I found a surprisingly intense rush of sweetness rapidly gave way to sourness, and finally sea saltiness and phenols lingered on my gums long afterwards. Absolutely bloody lovely.

Good morning Ralfy from the sunny state of Arizona! I have recently taken up the habit (addiction?) of whiskey, in part because of watching your vlogs. Glad to see you this new year reviewing the first bottle of whiskey I ever bought! Thank you for all you do, and congratulations on the record and trophy; a worthy accomplishment good sir.

Ralf! It has been many years, and due to circumstances I have not been allowed to have any alcohol in about 6 years! I am glad to see you still going... you really got me into something I will never forget, and someday soon I hope to re join you in the world of spirits. When I watched your first video of the Ardbeg 10 and went out and bought that whisky, it really floored me! I tell people all the time to watch you if they are planning on trying scotch. YOU THE MAN

Hey Ralphie, it's been awhile since I have commented on one of your videos but since it's the new year I'd like to thank you for your review of Ardbeg. Over the past few years I have introduced it to several whisky drinkers and every one of them who have not had it before guessed the bottle would cost at least 100USD, and it has become a favorite among several of my friends. Your websight looks like it has become a real nice resource as well. Happy new year!

That's a proper trophy right there :) Congrats again and have a great 2017! Has to be one of my faves the Ardbeg 10. Can't be beaten (in my exp) for peatyness and seems to get more smokey as the bottle goes down. The finish makes me feel like a dragon after a fire breath . . . so much smoke ;) Awesome stuff.

Happy New Year and congratulations on your world record. I liked your suggestion on blending a light whisky with something like an Ardbeg 10. I've experienced (based on your advice) that most whiskies will reward you if you're patient; while some others may need a boost from another whisky, depending on one's tastes. Thank you and here's to 2017!

Ralfy you're the best. The first bottle I ever got I looked for a review and found one of your videos. I've watched many other reviewers but no one is as down to earth, knowledgeable and entertaining as you. It just so happens that because of your first review of it, my go to Whisky is Ardbeg 10 year. You are correct, it's very consistent, and very unique, especially for the price. Laphroaig might be a bit more "volcanic" as you say (I call it a swift punch in the nose, and I love Laphroaig for that), but Ardbeg is so much more interesting to me. A story in every sip.

Ralfy! I'm here to watch this Ardbeg 10 re-review a second time because another whisky review channel has selected this as their replacement for the day. They introduce and link to this review. Long story, but it's "The Whisk[e]y Vault" Rex and Daniel, and they have done so many videos, their viewers have suggested they take a week off (because some thought they had worn themselves out). Rex, the rascal of the pair included a short intro and he linked to this video. I personally am very proud of one subtle fact: When I clicked on the link and I came to watch this video I see that my "Thumbs Up" Icon is already lit-up, all solid blue, meaning I've already given this video a thumbs up. I've given a thumbs up to every single video of yours that I have watched, plus I have watched every one of your videos (up to the last month or so... I'll watch these, shortly...) Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Ralfy -- Your first review of Ardbeg 10 back in 2009 really stoked my love for good single malts even more. I had never had it -- The biggest peat moment for me til then was Talisker 10 (still one of my favorites). It's a big peat moment but Ardbeg 10 is a different kind of experience. It's rainy, windy and cold here tonight and I'm enjoying a dram of the 10 -- it's like an old friend at this point.

Happy New Year and congratulations Mr. Ralfy! Wish you more years to come and records to break!As a novice I do enjoy very much the Ardbeg 10, but Im still having trouble finding the "sweet spot" of amount of water to put. Maybe I'm not giving it enough time in the glass? I noticed that in unchillfiltered whiskies it is harder for me to get the best dilution as compared to the usualy presented whiskies.

had the same idea of blending two malts or should I rather say spice up a malt with another. in my case a put a drop of uigeadail into a dram of springbank 10, which is one of my favourite whiskies. I mean it really doesn´t need such a treatment but I found the result quite interesting and rewarding. wish you a lot of great malt moments that you can share with us in 2017!

Ralfy, Sir I must thank you for your inspired suggestion on giving Irish whiskey a tiny splash of Ardbeg! I just tried this with a small glass of Jameson's standard blend, adding half a teaspoon or so of Ardbeg Uigeadail (my fav from the Ardbeg range), and was SHOCKED at how well they get along. I'd encourage anyone reading this to give it a try. I've never tried any blending whatsoever before, but this is pretty amazingly transformative! It's an absolutely delicious marriage. And Ralfy is quite right: just a tiny splash of the Ardbeg will suffice. On a side note Ralfy, from someone who lives in the U.S., I'm a bit curious how you describe Jameson Gold Reserve as "pub-market" and "not too expensive". It runs about $100 here in California, which is twice the price of the Ardbeg 10 you're reviewing. Was that just a goof, or is it the exchange rate or?? I've heard it's a lovely blend but it's still a bit out of my reach pricewise - especially for a blend. All the best, Malt-mate!

A lovely whisky. Thank you for turning me on to it. I already had Laphroaig in my cabinet when I wanted a peated whisky. It it lovely, but Ardbeg 10 is more accessible to people who enjoy a dry whisky but can't deal with the huge peat blast of Laphroaig. So nice not to see the caramel colorant and extreme chill filtering.

This message 24/01/17 Hurry - PS having sampled it, can't honestly tell if it's a good or bad batch. You got more out of your's than I did, with all those flavours you picked out but I am no expert. Love the ardbeg 10. I ALWAYS keep a bottle in my cabinet. What I always dwell upon is what its big competitor, the Laphroaig 10, would be like if they bottled it at the same ABV of 46% and leave out the colouring and chill filtration. Maybe blending the Laphroaig 10 with the 48% ABV of their Quarter Cask might be a good idea? Anyone tried this?
@willk7184
@willk7184 5 лет назад
Here we are over 2 yrs. since this was posted, and Ardbeg 10 is still a great scotch at a great value. Not a beginner's scotch, but when you're ready for that smoky complexity, this is a great intro. My sentimental fave, especially in its price range. If you get a chance, a similar dram worth trying is the Lagavulin 8.

Hi Ralfy, On your website is it possible to search for reviews using the whisky name as a search? Love the channel, new to whisky, but loving the journey, your channel is a great assistance to a beginner to notice and detect the flavours and notes within a bottle. I have found that tasting a whisky and attempting to detect the nuance within it is great fun, but being able to refer to your review while sampling again after helps me detect and appreciate aspects that I may have missed or noticed but been unable to reference. So nice to hear from you!!! Indeed what one could construe as a MALT MOMENT...... LOVE it.... I have a question if I may ask; What is the land speed record device you utilized?---(had a hard time reading the trophy on my notebook style laptop)... Side note; I had a significant magical "malt-moment" a few years back when I first tried a Highland Single Malt NAS expression by Tomatin called Legacy (Dualchas here in the States). Before this time of amazing discovery I was only familiar with a few blended standards of scotch whisky. I was also a lover of many fine bourbons and other American sour mash, rye, corn and other grain whiskies to include some Canadian whiskies as well (still am to this day too).... What struck me about this NAS Tomatin was that it had a VERY FAMILIAR whiskey note in it-----come to discover that the ex-bourbon barrels used in it's finishing were from Maker's Mark----one of my FAVORITE bourbons.... From here in west central Wisconsin-----have a great day sir!!! Hope to chat again!!!!!!!

Congratulations, again, on the Bonneville Speed Week record. Cool Trophy. As a kid I built a model of the Mickey Thompson Challenger I, which the trophy reminds me of. You are really are in great company there. Stopped by the Bon Accord last week for 1st time. Found private bottling (G&M) of Old Pultney 15 y.o. and an older bottle of Bruichladdich 10 y.o. Had a wee dram of each. Great place, wife and I had fun. Thanks for recommending it and thanks to Bon Accord for sponsoring you. Also recently had a dram of Millburn 40 y.o. in Inverness. Amazing. I've mixed Scotch whiskies together, not whisky and Irish whiskey. Have to try that. Thanks.

Always go for quality, not quantity :) . We were in Inverness for Christmas and went to a great pub that had a 40 y.o. Glen Albyn and Millburn, both lost distilleries. Pricey, but very complex, long finish. Also, it was our 40th anniversary. Reason enough! Cheers.

One should not be to pretentious when it comes to their own Achievements, regardless, congrats on the speed Award. Ardbeg, and it's many variations are among my favorites. Love the 10YO. I also, due to you "Blend" a dollop or two with many Scotch Whiskys, just because I can and sometimes, I think a whisky would benefit from a little peat hit. All because of you I went down many roads of exploration to see what could be. I'm a serious peat lover tho sherry casks make me smile a lot also. Cheers Sir.

We'll talk about a very early spring clean, the bothy is looking very good indeed. Thanks for The Review Ralfy. I used to like Ardbeg, sadly I don't like it anymore.

Ah ralphy... What a joy to hear you say this. How many of us have mixed and muddled our drams and found the best ( and worst ) brilliant new potions? A good solid whisky can bring up the lowest of dogs.

Congrats on the new hardware Ralfy - love the tabletop.. the Speed Record as well ;-).. Beautiful. bye the bye, I've been on the lookout for two whiskys without any luck - Thomas H. Handy Kentucky Straight Rye and also the Black Maple Hill 21 Cask 7 Bourbon.. have you done any tasting of either of those, and would you happen to know of anywhere they could be ordered from? I did come across some Compass Box Peat Monster the other day, couldn't recall what's been said about that lately so I just passed it by - would that be worth another look in the meantime? Thanx! - DG

Alowishus Devadander Abercrombie though I lack the renown of the great Ralfy Mitchell, and haven't tasted Peat Monster, I'd always recommend Compass Box's offerings. expect a phenolic whallop.

This is one of my favorites. I have a local distillery that has a single malt. It's quite high but good. But Ardbeg reminds me of fall & the holidays.

Hey, I know I'm late to the party here but congrats on the record - from one malty motorhead (petrol head) to another. Respect!

Had a dram of this with some smoked bacon Gouda that I found at the supermarket: went together marvelously!

ooh. Wonderful idea. I've recently being enjoying a dram of Ardbeg 10 every evening. And I have a Jameson 18yo limited reserve that while good, not something to write home about. I tried some Arbeg in it and have let it sit for around 15-20 minutes. It certainly takes more than just 1 teaspoon and the Jameson still keeps much of its nose. I must agree that I'm enjoying this Jameson/Ardbeg dram. But not so much that I'm going to be using my Ard10 to blend. In other news I do have an infinity bottle that needs refreshing soon :-D

Hello Ralfy. Love your reviews! Had my first dram of the Ardbeg 10 recently after seeing your review. It's an amazing liquid with dramatic arrival and a satisfying and long finish. An amazing experience. It definitely punches much above its weight and can give some biggies a run for their money!! Was curious to know if you have tried the Amrut Amalgam? Will be interesting to know what you feel about this expression from Amrut.

I love this whisky. I recently had a disappointing experience with a peated whisky - Glendronach Peated (no age statement). It felt too young and a bit harsh.. I thought for a moment that maybe I was just getting tired of the peated variety but then I poured a dram of this delicious whisky and realized why I fell in love years ago. Do you have any thoughts on Glendronach Peated? It's really the only Glendronach I've ever had that I didn't love..

Hello again Ralfy, any chance for a re-review of Glenlivet 12 y.o? Saw it's been over 7 years since it's first gander. People have recommended to me, but I've seen no recent reviews to see if it's quality is up to snuff. Thank you ralfy for your information, and hope you have a great and safe 2017.

Cheers for you speed achievment! Ralfy, there's a question for you coming all the way from southern Italy: do different types of yeasts somehow change whiskies taste ?
@ralfydotcom
@ralfydotcom 7 лет назад
. . . different yeasts create different flavours, especially if ferment duration is longer or shorter.

A wise man once told me that if you don't like Ardbeg, it's not the whisky' fault but yours.

Really one of my favorite whiskies. I'm only a few years into this journey but this was the first whisky that, upon first taste, made me feel like I'd been transported to a different place. All of a sudden I felt as if I were sitting on a beach with a roaring fire with the smell of smoke in my nose and the subtle taste of sea salt in my glass.
