Very interesting, thanks for sharing that part of Rallying with us. Great job the co-pilots are doing ! More than one would probably puke up trying to read at those kind of speeds !
if youre in the front of the car theres almost no way you can get carsick... if im at the wheel or in shotgun im fine but in buses or backseat of a car its awful
They are in some rally, but not WRC. Some rally events in the US hand out packets with the pace notes already written down. Also there are machines that determine the corner angles and such. That info is then translated into more legible notes and then handed out to teams, iirc.
Hello Uploader, thank you so much for this awesome video! Quick question: What were the names of the two gentlemen who came up with the method for the steering wheel? I had a hard time understanding. Thanks!
Every body start preparing for the great tribulation now stock up on food and supplies and most important of all trust in the LORD OF LORDS KING JESUS ALWAYS.
First time I heard pace notes was in colin mcrae rally 2.0 and I thought the numbers meant what the suitable gear would be for the corner, let's say a 6 would be gear 6 meaning that the turn would be wide
It’s funny to watch Hyundai pros driving BMW X3/X4 as a recco vehicle. Guys from Subaru or Mitsubishi had it much easier back in time... I remember Colin McRae and Nicky Grist driving white Volvo S60 AWD as their recco car.
Redo the video and drop the music altogether. Can't understand much of the narration or explanation, not that it would make sense to me anyway, but the distraction is annoying. Try racing with the radio turned up loud so you can't hear the navigator. Otherwise, pretty informative.
Well now I know what the girl is telling me when I play Dirt 3. Too bad it doesn't help me as I don't have a racing wheel setup. Thanks for the video! I learned something new.
Miles11we because when the pace notes in the game tell me left 6, there's no way for me to put the wheel on 6 without a wheel. And, I've noticed Dirt 3 with the game pad that I have is not very organic. That is, I'm tapping the wheel left or right instead of holding the trigger just a little off center. It might be that my trigger is set up in digital feedback instead of analog feedback. I'll have to check that out.
Machtyn yeah but you still know generally what an r2 or l6 looks like and if you should be breaking or whatever. do pikes peak without and with pacenotes- with will be alot faster.
i think your mistaking stuff, the number (30 for example) tells the driver how far it is till the turn and the the turn number (right 3 for example) tells the driver how difficult the turn is. 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. this allows them to have an idea of whats ahead.
seems to be opposite on the numbers, the lower number the harder the turn is, take a look at his wheel, the first number from center is 6, and then it counts downwards as you get further out from the center. This is also the way turns are described in games like DiRT Rally forexample
Recce car choice is an interesting subject. As far as I know, none of the manufacturers use their own cars for the recce (Volkswagen used to, but they're gone now).
Freeze is probably freezing the trip meter that tells him the apex of the corner and then restart will continue the meter back to normal i would imagine
yeah its for his trip meter. the co-driver also has A) a button or B) pedal to reset his "inbetween" trip meter (has two, one tells total distance traveled, one is reset between calls)
+ALSPEHEIR its a rule you have to have a co driver, theres a famous story of a driver who was pissed off with co drivers and one day just found a random villiager (the smallest guy he could find of course for weight reduction) and made him sit in the passenger seat so he could drive in peace xD
ALSPEHEIR damn it i've been bamboozled! geez i never get caught out by this bs kinda thing, i remember hearing about it on a TV show so i guess thats why i didnt question it lol
Can't most part of this be done with a set of g-force sensors and steering potentiometer on the car? Problem is probably that it would be too expensive?
Firstly it's not allowed, based on the rules. Secondly your recce's speed cannot exceed 70kmph. So you can't judge/simulate the g forces and potentiometers because each corner can be taken in a very different manner
If we rally in Belgium, it's tarmac and fast. A lot of the stages are tree lined. Doh! When doing the notes, my driver never mentions trees, but I do in the notes as a caution if its not obvious, and he doesn't mind. They are the downfall of many a rally crew.
what about the "left six ONE HUNDRED"? or left six EIGHTY, TWO HUNDRED? i realized through experience(?) that it means easier?? a 6 right 100 is easier than a 6 right? maybe i am getting it all wrong, so i am here all nooby asking you guys lol thanks in advance
ok i did some studying lol that number means distance, so yeah, in a way i was right, the bigger the number the easier the turn will be, because, for me at least, it gives more time to adjust the car or correct mistakes. Although 6 right LONG can also give the same idea, but i still remember that the 6 right 100 and maybe extending to 200 is a easier turn Anyways, this video gave me the will to do some more research ;)
umm do someone thinks that co driver can be just leave behind the starting line ?. he will more in the focus when he is not in the car . you can simply communicate and connected video from the car. . then when crushed only one dies .
No. The co-driver does so much more then just give directions, (think changing tyres, adding to the notes, working out times, which have to be worked out down to the minute etc.) Also, many stages are in areas with out phone coverage.
Okay so now you explain why. But not what the values mean. That would be cool to understand a bit of what the different values actually means and how you got to them
That is for when they are doing recce, (so making the pacenotes) which is on roads open to the public and with a lowish speed limit. Not for when they are actually competing!
robinheil maybe learn to listen to perfectly fine english since your comment is written in good english. i am going to assume your an ignorant american.
gabba why thank you that was the intention since it's generally ignorant Americans who think that if it's not in their accent that it needs captions even if the primary language is indeed English
Howto not they don't use them during the race. They just use the numbers when making the pace notes. That way they don't have to try and guess the consistency of their notes.
I hate to be "that guy, but all this did was leave me even more confused about pace notes. Why not just have a system where the co-pilot says something like, "Right sharp mid," instead of all of these weird numbers and minuses and whatnot? That and memorizing the tracks and doing solo rallies are so much easier than trying to understand the pace notes. And... Speeding... In a race... Am I missing something here? First, you get penalized for making it from one stage to another too quickly (Not counting traffic violations) and now you get penalized for finishing a race too quickly? I thought the point of a race was to make it from one point to another as fast as possible. These rules and regulations make me NOT want to get into rallying because all I'm hearing is that you get punished for trying.
Brock Dumesnil yep, you've missed the point. the speed limits only apply during reconnaissance ("reccy") when they're learning the route "2 day, 2 pass reccy" as they say. the speed limit is so they don't affect the car in front/behind as they reccy. For the stage proper they're flat out. In a rally you often have to drive in public roads between stages as well, so you have to stick to the speed limits.
Brock Dumesnil they don't use those terms because they're open to interpretation, sharp right mid could mean one thing to one person and something else to another, numbers brings consistency and also allows for interchangeable co drivers and drivers. It's especially important because of all the varying courses/layouts.
d1oftwins Because hillclimb events are just one stretch of road, therefore not needing a nav because you would get used to it over a few reccy runs/practice attacks.
in Dirt 3 and sega rally, im more annoyed at the dude screaming directions at me and it makes me loose concentration so whenever possible i turn it of, i can clearly see the road i dont need some dude telling me where to go.
im driving as fast as possible without overshooting a curve, its not possible to drive faster than i do without having time to brake. its not essential to have a dude screaming in my face and making me loose concentration, and he even says themn to late and making me crash
Maybe because you're turning ON the directional map.. Try turning it OFF and drive as fast as you can and tell me how many crashes you've got .. If it's a clean race though, then you've already memorized the stage !
