January 50 years ago I was a kid, on the radio I kept up to date as I could on the progress of the race and I could not believe it would end as I hoped... Great exultation with friends the next day. And shortly after we all glued with our noses to the window of the toy shop where the 1:43 model of the red / black Lancia Fulvia HF dedicated to the victory in Monte Carlo by Mercury had arrived! (became everyone's favorite birthday present😊)

Ah, la fin des années 60 et le début des années 70, une époque magique pour le Monte. A Monaco, on pouvait approcher les équipes, les pilotes, les voitures. On collectionnait les clous; j'en avais collecté plus de 12 types différents. Et puis, il y avait quasiment toujours de la neige, en particulier pour le parcours commun et lors de la nuit du Turini. Et puis la listes des voitures de l'époque fait rêver: Porsche 911 S, Alpine A 110 S, Lancia Fulvia HF, Fiat 124 spider, Datsun 240 Z, Ford Escort, Opel commodore (avant les Ascona, Manta et Kadet GTE). Quel rêve!

A l'époque, on pouvait suivre tout la nuit du Turini sur RMC; et c'était génial. Je me rappelle m'être endormi quelques heures alors que les Alpines menaient et m'être réveillé pour entendre qu'aucune n'était plus dans le Top 3; quelle déception. Mais comme j'adorai la Lancia Fulvia HF et Munari, j'étais content pour lui. Sa première victoire et à mon avis la plus belle, même si les trois d'affilée avec la Stratos, c'est une partie de la légende du Monte.

LANCIA, LANCIA e ancora LANCIA. “Allora dov’eravamo rimasti?” Verrebbe da chiedersi. Ai favolosi anni ‘70. Correva l’anno 1972 e la Fulvietta era spacciata. Il Monte era una faccenda tra Porsche 911 e Alpine A110. Sotto i flash lo squadrone delle ringhiose Alpine di Dieppe volute da Jean Rédélé con la preparazione motoristica di un italiano: Amedeo Gordini, il tecnico progettista e guru del “Nous mettons tout notre savoir faire" per vincere. I francesi si aspettano il dominio delle Alpine, contrastate solo dalle meno maneggevoli e potenti Porsche. La Fulvia Hf di Munari e Mannucci n. 14 era una comparsa, lì tanto per far numero, vecchia agli occhi di tutti, di un’altra generazione, a trazione anteriore, aveva tutto ciò che serviva per perdere: troppo pesante (200 chili più dell’Alpine) e poco potente (110 cavalli meno della 911). Inizia il Monte. Inizia con la battaglia tra Alpine con le Alpine e le Porsche. Ma dietro gli arrembanti Galli di Francia e le Porsche c’è Lui. Il Drago e la vecchia Fulvietta tengono botta. Precisi, puliti e veloci, lasciano scatenare le Alpine e le Porsche che si scannano tra loro speciale, dopo speciale. All’alba del 27 gennaio la Fulvia di Munari e Mannucci, incredibilmente si è portata nella notte di neve e di ghiaccio in terza posizione, contro ogni pronostico e sono pronti dopo un panino al prosciutto nella notte buia e tempestosa a giocarsi l’ultima carta, la prova più dura, quella del Col de Turini, sotto una pioggia battente che si trasforma ben presto in una tormentata bufera di neve: condizioni al limite dell'impossibile. Le Porsche non tengono la strada: troppa la potenza da scaricare a terra, quando sotto le ruote c'è neve e ghiaccio. Le Alpine muoiono una dopo l’altra, Andruet sbatte contro la montagna, Darniche e Andersson rompono il cambio. La Fulvietta vola, vola nella tempesta di neve del Turini e volerà fino al traguardo, quel 28 gennaio del 1972. La Fulvietta con quel V4 stretto monotestata sotto il cofano, sbancò di nuovo e contro ogni pronostico il Monte del ‘72. Il lunedì dopo, furono richiamati al lavoro gli operai delle linee di produzione della Fulvia Coupé, chiuse da un mese perchè il modello era vecchio e non vendeva più. Dopo quel Montecarlo tutti volevano la vecchia Fulvietta, le richieste si impennarono, l'attività fu ripresa e gli operai tornarono al lavoro. Poi arrivò la Regina. La strabiliante Stratos.

Great video. Lots of different rally cars, but it seems NO SAAB 96s. The conditions would seem to be ideal for the Saab team. They had great success on the Monte with the earlier 2 stroke and had just had a great win on the RAC in 1971, but no sign of them on the 1972 Monte. Any ideas?
