If America can be proud of anything it is the musical talent she has in abundance and of such variation and style. Bluegrass is one of the world's most beautiful yet underappreciated genres of music and should take centre stage internationally more often. Thank you USA
that is because it is a much older song, that eventually became an Appalachian folk song. It's been 'bluegrassified' here. I actually prefer the more traditional rendition of the song for that reason, there is a disconnect between the feel of the rhythm/embellishments, and the content of lyrics. This is pretty great though.
That's because it's a white man's Soul Music..my dad played bluegrass all his life..I grew up back stage at the old Grand Opray..Rahlp Stanley is my great uncle. My grandmas Brother..I had no choice but to love it.
Dr. Ralph Stanley is a priceless treasure to all of us fans of Bluegrass music! And his band is great, awesome fiddle work by James Price! Patty is just excellent in this performance; Bluegrass is her REAL forte! Love this great performance! :)
This song tells a story from the sixteenth century. These are real people ralph and patty are singing about and you can feel it in the way they performed it.
This is the real music of America. Bluegrass elevates old time ballads that have existed for hundreds of years and added flesh and blood and bone to them. It gives me a natural high to listen to it every time.
patty loveless is AMAZING! and Ralph Stanleys reaction to her holding that note n then finishing it higher n harder you could see the love and admiration in BOTH of their faces to be a part of that performance..THANKYOU!!
This always has, and will always be my favorite version of this song. Every other version is just bland in comparison. Their voices sound so great together.
That note at 2:46 always gives me chills, and just look at the look Stanley gives her when she pins the tail on it at the end...I think it lasts for a full 4 measures before she lets it go...Awesome!
Patty seems to be such a nice person... the way she was looking at him you knew she was going to give him a kiss on the cheek like a grand daughter would.
This is about as good as it gets.....thank you Jesus for pulling me out of the mire, that I now have a chance to listen to beautiful music and appreciate life.
One of my fave youtubes. Can't get much better than this. Thank you, Ralph, for sticking with your gut instinct to keep on going and NOT changing your style, all these many, many years. You will live on FOREVER thru your music.
Patty is here, paying the utmost respect to a true legend. I wonder if she knows that she's a legend herself. Damn, when she held that note, I almost fell out of my chair, and the look on Mr. Stanley's face was priceless. This video, along with the Patty Loveless/Ricky Scaggs video of Daniel Prayed, are just two good reasons why Ms. Loveless is THE best country singer of her generation ... or any generation. This lady is truly something special.
@@77lissaable he said best country singer. They both are country, so not really apples to oranges. Saying someone is the best is all subjective. So if he, or anyone else, feels she's the best then she is to them. I won't deny she is a fantastic singer. :)
I cant believe how long Patty can hold that note! WOW!!! I just love the look on Ralph's face when she did that! Priceless! This is a really great song! I listen to it often. Enjoy James
This is one of my favorite songs. I almost screamed at the TV when Francis began to sing this to Claire. I knew the last verse of this song. So glad to see others who came here to locate the song. Pretty chilling when you hear that last verse... what's in Claire's future? Welcome to Blue Grass, come on in and sit a spell. Good folks here.
This video just blows my mind; it also impressed the late Ralph Stanley. Look at his expression when Patty 'hangs onto those high notes.' Classic duo from Dr. Ralph Stanley. Enjoy, Bookmark and Share:
This is great stuff! Musicianship is out standing, as well as the vocals. Let alone the lyrics themselves. Pretty profound thoughts if you ask me. No simple hillbillies here!
Wow that brought tears to my eyes, absolutely brilliantly lovely an hairs standing up on the back of my neck . When music bore’s into your soul !! Greetings from Portsmouth England 🏴
my mom and dad always listen to Ralph when we go down home to Knott Co. Ky. I myself grew to love him and his music. Gonna miss him. Legends live forever
+the32712 Steve Sparkman is the best at the Stanley style (next to Ralph of course). He even sounds like Ralph on back-up. Plays it just like Ralph on the back-up parts too, the way Ralph used to make the banjo "glide" throughout the song--Steve does that well here also!
Sure wish these two would do an album together. I love Patty and the radio stations here in Toledo won't play her. No they want to pass off that half rock crap as country. Give me this PURE mountain music anytime. I have seen Ralph twice and he is just the most humble man, talk to all his fan and let you take pictures with him. Great guy!
Am i crazy? every single time i watch this performance i get teary-eyed. Luckily met Dr Ralph in Chicago at Fitzgerald's I was hollering songs for him to sing on stage he said that some of the songs I was requesting he hadn't sang since Carter died I felt horrible. God bless him they both rest in peace now. (side note) Patty is a dang smoke show in this video. Wow.
. Patty don't think there's a song that you can't sing your own you're super good and everything you do with no bluegrass songs and country songs and you just got it anyway
Dr. Ralph Stanley my hometown star! From extreme southwest Virginia in the counties of Wise and Dickenson we are proud of this family's amazing contribution to the music industry. Ralph II and Nathan Stanley are awesome, as well as the Clinch Mtn Boys.
Love Patty Loveless and not a huge country fan…she is incredible singing Bluegrass. I don’t think she gets the recognition she definitely deserves. Have you seen her sing with Vince Gill Go Rest High on that Mountain (George Jones funeral)? Incredible and worth the watch.
@gregnormal5101 it’s hard to say…she is good with Vince gill as mentioned. I like the country songs ”you don’t even know me”, “you’ll never leave Harlan alive”, “how can I help you say goodbye “…also like bluegrass song Daniel prayed (with Ricky Skaggs) but there’s a number of songs and once you hear them you end up listening again.
Oh Polly, Pretty Polly, would you take me-unkind! Polly, Pretty Polly, would you take me,--unkind! for you to set beside me and tell me your mind. Well my mind is to marry and never to part. My mind is to marry and never to part. The first time I saw you, you wounded my heart. Oh Polly Pretty Polly come and go along with me. Polly Pretty Polly come and go along with me. Before we get married some pleasure to seek. Well he led her over mountains and valleys so deep. Led her over mountains and valleys so deep. Polly mistrusted and then began to weep. Sayin' Willie, Little Willie, I'm afraid of your ways. Willie, Little Willie, I'm afraid of your ways. The way you've been rambling you'll lead me astray. Well Polly, Pretty Polly, your guess is about right. Polly, Pretty Polly, your guess is about right. I dug on your grave the biggest part of last night. Well he led her a little farther and what did she spy. He led her a little farther and what did she spy. A new dug grave with a spade lying by. Then she knelt down before him a pleadin' for her life. She knelt down before him a pleadin' for her life. Rather be a single girl if I can't be your wife. Now Polly, Pretty Polly that never can be. Polly, Pretty Polly that never can be. Your past reputation's been trouble to me. Then he opened up her bosom, As white as any snow Then he opened up her bosom As white as any snow. And stabbed her through the heart. And the blood did overflow. Then he went down to the jailhouse and what did he say. He went to the jailhouse and what did he say. I've killed Pretty Polly and trying to get away.
ABSOLUTELY a song glorifying/ punishing women for being human. Featuring a pathetically controlling and jealous suitor. A (PSYCHOPATHIC)? KILLER. I love the TRUTH of Appalachian Music, HOWEVER. EVEN this sad story.
@@lisamcguire7778 No, Lisa. Polly was a nice girl betrayed by bum. They had swift justice for guys like that. Trial one day hanging on the next. No appeal. Even at a latter time in Judge Parker's Federal Court in Fort Smith that's how cases in the wild Oklahoma territory that's the way things were done.
