I'm showing you how and when to replace your engine air filter specifically on my RAM 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi engine. I show you the location and tips how to change your air filter. I go over 3 important reasons why your should change your air filter and the dangers of not changing your engine air filter. Lastly I talk about not getting scammed by lube shops looking to make a quick buck by upselling you over priced air filter you DON'T need.
First reason to change your engine air filter is because it can affect the engines performance and power. there is a lot of air flow going threw that filter and even a small restriction can create issues. it takes roughly 10,000 Liters of air to burn 1 liter of fuel so there is a lot of air flow needed to run an engine.
Second reason to change your engine air filter is for fuel economy, this goes nicely with engine performance because with a restricting air filter your engine is not going to get the ideal fuel to air mixture. this will result in an increase in fuel consumption which nobody wants.
Third reason is engine protection. This is the biggest reason why you should change your air filter because if enough dust gets into your engine it will ruin your engine. I've seen first hand engine being completely ruined by operators not changing air filters. and unfortunately with the normal passenger vehicle the engines are not worth rebuilding and it is more economical to rip the old one out and put a new one in. So be careful about reason manufactures recommendations.
My advice would be to follow your vehicles maintenance information and to change your engine air filter at least once every two years!
