RAM 2500 HEMI TICK (6.4 Liter) | Ticking Noise at START UP - Should You be Worried??

I go over the HEMI TICK on my ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter hemi engine. I discuss if ticking at start up is something to be concerned about with your engine. same thing applies for any RAM 1500 with the 5.7 liter hemi. Turns out ticking on start up is completely normal and there is nothing wrong with your engine! I explained what is happening when your engine is ticking at start up and how to potentially fix the issue!
I hope everyone is having a good week! I wanted to touch on the topic of the hemi tick once again because everyone seems to be worried about it. this time I am focusing on the hemi tick when starting your engine.
so there are 3 different categories when looking into this problem. if your engine tick between 2 and 10 seconds. if your engine ticks for 30 seconds to a couple minutes and finally does your hemi never stop ticking after start up.
Today I am focusing on the first situation but if your engine is only ticking for 30 seconds to a couple minutes. odds are your are looking at an exhaust manifold leak. this is very common for the 5.7 liter hemi's. it is annoying but nothing really to worry about.
if your hemi tick never goes away them we are potentially looking at the "real hemi tick" where the lifters are smashing into the cam lobes and causing real damage to the engine - not good. this is caused by the lifter needle bearings failing.
but if you engine is only ticking upon start up for a couple of seconds this is normal and really nothing to worry about. RAM even has a section in the owners manual talking about how this is normal.
so this early ticking noise is created because the engine has lost oil pressure and it takes a couple of seconds to regain that oil pressure. since the lifter are hydraulically adjusted and activiated without engine oil pressure the lifter are going to hit into the cam lobes for a couple of seconds before engine oil pressure gets to them.
the lifters and cam shaft are one of the last places to receive oil pressure so this kind of makes sense why it takes a couple of seconds to correct this issue.
This should be somewhat random and if so nothing to worry about. however there are way to prevent this from happening. short drives are one thing to avoid as well as setting the truck and engine sit for a long period of time.
the other thing that I think it not really talked about too much is the oil filter. the oil filter has whats called an anti-drain back valve that prevents oil from draining back to the engine oil pan and it keeps a good amount of oil in the engine so when you go to start up the lifter components have oil flow right away. if you have a cheap filter or a bad valve this can create ticking on start up much more common. so it is a good idea to spend the money have get a good oil filter. and if you are having ticking noise on start up regularly I would change your oil filter!
I hope you guys liked the video!

So apparently a lot of people don't know about this I didn't know about it either until a Ford Tech showed it to me and apparently most Vehicles today have this feature. I did this with my F-150 I now have a 2020 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi and it also has the same thing. Just about all vehicles today have a feature called (flood mode) how to use flood mode is when you get in your vehicle push the brake and gas pedal all the way to the floor and turn the ignition this will spin the engine over but not allow it to start until you release your foot from the gas pedal. Normally when you start your vehicle the engine starts up within the first turnover using flood mode you can allow the engine to turn over indefinitely until you allow it to start by releasing the gas pedal . Doing this you can pre-prime your engine with oil before it starts usually only takes a few seconds but this will help you prevent dry starts This works with key and push-button ignitions it doesn't matter. I hope people find this information helpful.

I read all 123 pages of the “Oil Filter Thread” over on RamForum. What I gathered is the Royal Purple 20-820 is about the best oil filter you can get for the 6.4, though there are other top tier filters like the Wix XP. Redline 5w30 seems to be the gold standard for fixing/preventing lifter tick (high moly I guess) but it costs too much for me so Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 it is. I change religiously every 5,000 miles - 25,000 miles and no issues. Fingers crossed boys!

I was from the school that using the oil and oil filter that the engine was engineered with what is the best route to go, I have now changed my stance on that. I came across this video trying to troubleshoot why in fact my 2022 ram 2500 6.4 was ticking every time I started it after sitting for a bit. After watching the video, I decided to try the Wix XP filter. It’s completely eradicated the tick. I am still using Penzoil 0W 30 full synthetic that the motor was engineered with.

Just an anecdotal observation- my 2017 Ram 1500 longhorn does this much more noticeably when at home and using California's "reformulated gasoline" - we also travel a lot with an RV - we used to tow a travel trailer, now tow the Ram behind the motorhome - and about ¾ of the 70,000 miles on it have been towing 6,000+ lbs on the interstate all day, or driving around in other states. I don't see the problem at all when in states with straight-gasoline / zero ethanol - marginally in most states; and pronounced with California gasoline. The 'tick' on mine sounds more like it is coming from the fuel injection or ignition on the passenger side - and completely goes away in about 20 seconds. When at home / not traveling, we live in a tiny little area about 3 miles wide and I do a lot of short trips - getting coffee, etc., so it does a few (less than 5) 2-mile trips in a given week - and I can definitely see where a lack of oil flow through the hydraulic lifters could be contributing. Best video/discussion I have seen about the issue though, and thanks for calling out the owner's manual statement... My other thought - I usually / almost-always take it to the dealer for an oil change - Ram uses Pennzoil .. although theoretically I should be getting Mobile 1 with my all-synthetic maintenance contract. All of the racers & car guys in my family growing up said to never use Pennzoil in anything that actually moves.. not even a manually-operated push-lawn-mower.

If the truck sits for a while, like on vacation, I turn the engine over in flood mode first to build oil pressure then start up. I have 125k km now and I'm on the M1-113 mobil 1 filter, minimal lifter bleed down with that. IMO with synthetic 5w20 there is a bit more start up snapping, especially with the mopar filter (which is made by purolator I think).

Would it be fair to say that the wear and tear on the lifter rollers and cams is increased during the initial 10 to 20 seconds while the oil pressure is building up? And if that is the case, would it be fair to say that implementation of start/stop engine features on similar engines causes undue wear on the valve train?

06 Jeep Commander 5.7, you need more info, go to uncle Tony's garage, this is caused by poor oiling in these new engines because camshaft is further from crankshaft vs older engine designs. Causes lifter bearings to go out plus there is scoring in the lifter bores themselves. 10K later for a remanufactured engine from Jasper, and do more research, you can find 30 videos at least all across different models that wiped cam lobes. So if you want to gamble with $70K good luck. Or you can buy a million mile 5.7 Toyota and be done with it

I have a 17 1500. Had the bolts break once at 57k miles and haven't had the problem since. I let the engine warm up all the way before I shut it off again, even if I'm just moving it out of the driveway to the street. The bolts break because the bolts, heads, and manifolds are all made out of a different metal. Meaning they heat up and cool down at different rates, causing stress on the bolts. Warming the engine up all the way helps reduce this.
