the 2025 Ram 2500/3500 will have a Brand New 6.7L Cummins Diesel Engine reportedly more power then the current cummins High Output diesel engine with 420hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. This cummins engine will ALSO be paired with the ZF 8 speed powerline transmission completely reshaping the diesel powertrain. It might be the best Engine/Transmission Combo.

Mopar Insider has reported that in 2025 there will be a brand new version of the 6.7L cummins turbo diesel engine going in the RAM 2500 and Ram 3500 HD pick up trucks.
we have also found out that there is not going to be a standard output and high output version of the engine. instead there will just be one engine option but this engine option is reported to be more powerful then the Current HO cummins diesel option which is pretty awesome to hear.
now along with this new CUmmins diesel engine. these RAM 2500 truck will ditch the longstanding 68RFE 6 speed transmission for the ZF 8 speed powerline transmission which i think will be a wonderfully strong and reliable unit.
If cummins built this new engine right, paired with that new HD zf 8 speed transmission these RAM HD trucks could be absolutely wonderful trucks. Im very excited to see what happens moving forward. We don't have power numbers just yet but I imagine it won't be long now.
The third bit of information is that RAM is indeed keeping the 6.4L Hemi onboard as the standard engine option and only gas engine option. I have speculated that Ram was going to ditch these 6.4L hemi engines but not right now.
at least through the 2025 model year the 6.4L hemi will live and who knows how much further past then!

The torque wars are ridiculous. The drivability and reliability are what buyers look for. I don't care which one is "faster". If you're buying an HD truck for speed, you're nuts. There are many who believe that ZF makes the world's best transmissions. Of course, Cummins is legendary. Little boys grow into men wanting a Cummins diesel. So, I believe that this is a smart move. Arguably, Ram will have the best engine and the best transmission in their heavy duty trucks. It would be virtually impossible for them to build anything better themselves.

I would like to see a G/T edition 2500, Ive seen the 1500 G/T edition, It has paddle shifters and a console mounted gear selector, and considering they’ve brought some things over from the 1500 to the 2500 I would love to have an 8 speed 2500 with paddle shifters. Only thing I would trade it for would be a 7 speed manual or the 8 speed diesel as a G/T edition, 100% would trade it in for one of those.

I think ram was waiting until they had a better transmission to bump up the power. The 68RFE was okay, but never shifted really happy and kinda the same story with the Aisin unit in the HO version. They just didn’t drive anywhere as good as the competing. That and I trust the 68RFE about as far as I can throw it, which is pretty self explanatory. It’s way better than the old 4 speed, but under extreme duty, just doesn’t hold up.

Folks, the reason they are introducing a whole new motor is that when they designed the new block, they reduced weight to the tune of 75 pounds less than the previous cast iron blocks. Some of that weight reduction was done in and around the crankshaft journals. From what I understand the journals actually flex to an oval shape under load because the block doesn't have the "meat" in that area. This in turn causes oiling issues with the adjacent rod bearings. It throws a rod and knocks a hole in the side of the block. Trust me I have a 2023 with the new block and I plan on trading it ASAP and am none too happy that they have done this. I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere pulling a toy hauler and have to potentially put an oil fire out. The new material they use to make the block now is compacted graphite iron (CGI) and best I can tell was introduced in the 2019 models.

It might make more sense for Ram/Cummins to only have one, but I think from a consumer standpoint this is bad. Having some real separation in capability between the 2500 and 3500 series trucks makes sense. So then naturally having a smaller engine, focused on less cost (perhaps) but more importantly, fuel efficiency, would be a good thing. We don't need a 2500 with 2000 lb/ft of torque, that makes 0 sense. If you need more power than 800 lb/ft then hop into the 3500, that's literally what its there for. For the 2500, give me a smaller engine, and allow me to keep my total cost of ownership down (less def usage, less mpg, and whatever else is involved). Having an updated 8 speed across the board though, that is a good thing. I don't think this will help sales either, the Ram heavy duty looks stale, and it has the smallest cab. That needs to be adressed at some point very soon. If they had come out with an all new 5th gen heavy duty 2500, new cab, updated dimensions, 8 speed transmission, and a more efficient cummins at 800 lb/ft, that would be killer IMHO. Keep the 1000+ lb/ft monster for the 3500 where its actually needed.

2:16 Looking at that graphic, that ZF is “only” rated for 1,000 lb-ft. If the new engine will make more power than the current HO, will it support that much torque? I’m sure ZF will make variants, if that’s what it’ll be paired with.

I love the content and I love the videos. But I just think new trucks are ridiculous. I ordered my 2023 Tradesman with the 6.4 Hemi and to me it has plenty of power. Sometimes too much because it's easy to speed and everything else .I've owned diesels and gas for the last 23 years. Most people don't tow they just fly up and down the interstate. I think we would have a better world if we went back to 230 horsepower big blocks lol! I think it's a waste of resources. But whatever. My 99 second gen V10 Dually is still my favourite truck to drive!! To me it it is a perfect balance.

@BrandonLeech
@BrandonLeech Месяц назад
I don't think anybody knows yet what the actual technical revisions will be from the current engines, if there even are any. They might just be dropping the standard output version and doing a modest power bump on the current HO version and calling it "new and improved". The transmission I believe they have been working on for quite some time which is probably the bigger news.

Maybe I missed in the prior video on this ZF Powerline transmission, but in the graphic at 2:15 here it shows that transmission being limited to 1000lb-ft. That's more than the current standard output engine, but less than the current HO mill. What will they do about that?
@heavymetalmechanicX
@heavymetalmechanicX Месяц назад
That's 1000lb-ft at 57,000lb GCWR. They will likely increase the max torque rating for use in a light truck with a GCWR in the 40,000-45,000lb range.
@JaegerWrenching
@JaegerWrenching Месяц назад
Technically Fords 10r140 is rated at 1400 NM or 1032ftlbs, yet it still has a 1200ftlbs output engine. I'll also say the 11-19MY Powerstroke 6r140 holds up to a lot more than its rated 1400nm... they actually hold more than the newer 10r140 as it has more clutch surface area... But I do agree it seems a little odd for the ZF to be rated at 1000ftlbs on a new build, could also be set low for "initial testing" so Ford and chevy think that's its final rating...
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures Месяц назад
I did address that in the prior video and questioned exactly that. my guess would be they have either changed some components or as other folks have mentioned made it work due to the lighter GCWR
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP Месяц назад
Ah gotcha thanks all. Yeah makes sense it’s made to both a torque input as well as a weight or duty cycle. And I had no idea the Ford was rated in NM instead of lb-ft as I think I initially thought. Either way I’m sure it’ll be fine and hopefully prove itself to be a solid unit to pair with the Cummins. I’m still weary of all modern diesels due to the emissions stuff they laden them with but if I were to get one I think a Cummins would be my preferred brand as I love inline engines.
@BrandonLeech

You'd have to really read the fine print on that one but from a technical perspective (not just throwing numbers around and bench racing) I doubt that unit has any trouble holding up behind a little 6.7 liter school bus engine.

Really how much power do you really need? All you need is GEARING! With a deep enough hole and ratio spread and decent flat torque curve. Somewhere around the 420 hp, @2,500 rpm’s with 1,150 lbs ft@ 1,600 rpm’s. With a clean but reasonable DEF system and exhaust system. With a very nice big gain in mileage being a key factor, no matter how it’s done, even if lower power is made, to get a HD to achieve 20 city 25 highway! That would shame the others that may reach the top of the Ike Tunnels long grade, but doing so at over 12 mpg! While maintaining legal speed.

I mean that certainly could be the case, I'm under the impression they are continuing the 6.7L platform. reason being is because that engine being an inline-6 is very long and it barely fits as is under the hood. adding another 20% to the length it probably won't fit in the truck. especially since they are keeping the existing cab and chassis.
