Ram Dass explores how we can have perspectives and models about the universe without being attached to them, as long as we cultivate the state of no mind and trust our intuitive validity.

This episode of Here and Now is taken from a Ram Dass talk at Colby College in April of 1970. In this talk:
- Ram Dass explores how it’s healthy to have perspectives and models about the universe and how things are, but it’s crucial that we don’t become attached to or stuck in that perspective.
- Telling stories of his time in far-out places like India, Los Angeles, and heroin treatment centers, Ram Dass shares how it’s all perspective. Having a perspective is harmonious with the Tao, with the way of things, but we can’t get addicted to it and have it become our “reality.” He talks about how things like school and television are designed to keep us stuck in our roles, models, and perspectives.
- Ultimately, we can learn to trust our intuitive validity and cultivate the - Buddhist state of no mind, where we have finished with our models. We can know the difference between being wise and being knowledgeable.
“As long as you are attached to any model of the universe, to any level of definition of who you are or how it works, you are closed off from the rest of it. And the state of no mind, the Buddhist state of no mind, is where you have finished with models. You don’t even be enlightened, you don’t be anything, there’s just no mind.” - Ram Dass
About Ram Dass:
Ram Dass’ spirit has been a guiding light for generations, carrying along millions on the journey. Ram Dass teaches that through the Bhakti practice of unconditional love, we can all connect with our true nature. Through these teachings, Ram Dass has shared a little piece of his guru, Maharaj-ji, with all who have listened to him.

This is a great lecture as most of them are. One of the things I really appreciate is that when he says something funny, someone close to the front snorts when they laugh! How precious is that!

The greatest spiritual marketing scam: asking somebody else how it feels to experience something that is part of your nature and that you can understand just by being what you already are. That's where all the business of the "guru builds and destroys believers" and "believers create and destroy their guru" begins.
@pathofsadhana

Well yes but someone who hasn’t lifted the veil may need the guru (someone who’s lifted the veil) to help them lift the veil themself. Funny paradox. God help god realize he is god.

The desire to have what you want is causing suffering, the ego is falling trap to that experience of instant gratification. Ego is like, why doesn't this person commenting about the up coming talk let go of their ego? Meanwhile your ego is saying "don't they know it is annoying me?! 😂😅😂

how can you be no mind if you are both the soul and spirit? I cannot ignore the soul to just be spirit. Maybe at certain times definitley I would love for that but I dont know. Im just frustrated overall I apologize. After listening for a few min at least lol I have realized that maybe "no mind" is what I felt when I was making art earlier I wasn't suffering how I usually suffer.. Thanks!

It's unnecessary for you, perhaps. Raghu works hard assembling these talks for our listening pleasure, as such, he's entitled to his intro. Head to the comments for a skip, as there's always someone kind enough to find the point where Ram Dass begins. Keep working on yourself, my friend.

@@runningsandwichLike the creep, that is a very self-centered response. He was a grown ass man that had the ability to say no. What about the vulnerable (children} who don't have the ability, basically giving the green-light to the abuser. With age (wisdom) comes responsibility. The guys a creep, selfish, egotistic, no different to the sexual abuser.

There was no sexual abuse because there was no one there to be abused
@willowgalan2942

@Erik-cp4sr Incredibly Disgusting and vile response to an issue which needs to be treated with seriousness and respect. The other commenter is clearly concerned about sexual misconduct between two actual human beings who were affecting each others real lives. This isnt just another damn story on your youtube to spout your bullshit hippie garbage about. Richard Alpert was talking about an event of sexual groping to a group of hundreds of people, and the commenter literally only brought it up to MAKE SURE IT WAS CONSENTUAL. How could you POSSIBLY believe that is an appropriate response? Do better.
@willowgalan2942
@willowgalan2942 4 месяца назад
How can you be so divorced from reality that this is your chosen response to these people's concerns about issues of potential sexual misconduct, abuse, and groping. I am dead serious. Do you have any shame at all? Its incredibly alarming and is something most people would agree should be spoken to a therapist about. Ram dass is dead and just because hes a guy whose opinions you happen to agree with gives you absolutely no excuse to talk about these issues in that way. And for the record, to say "there is no sexual abuse because there is no one there to be abused" is the most rapey predatory argument that i have ever seen on the internet 😨
