Hey drifters, welcome back to our van build video series where we show you one chaotic project after another. If you like our content, please like, comment, share with your friends, and subscribe! Thanks!
Today's project is the installation of the Class 3 Curt Hitch (Part number 13207) on our Ram Promaster 2500 Van. What initially starts out as an easy 45-minute job quickly turned into 4 hours!
Long story short, this hitch is supposedly compatible with the Ram Promaster 2500, according to Curt and Uhaul. Hoawever, some vans (like ours) have a grounding stud on one of the frame rails that interferes with the hitch. Watch the whole video to see how we discovered this issue and what we did to fix it and move forward with the hitch installation. We'll post a follow-up video of the wiring harness installation as well.

Great stuff! Heading out to look for a grounding stud on mine.... ( I do think I will call Curt Monday and see if they have updated the hitch in the two years since this was filmed. ) Thanks!

Thanks for watching! Hopefully they updated it but I don't have a lot of faith that they did.

We owe you guys a huge one as this video made installing the hitch super simple, even got it done within 40 minutes. No way would that have happened without this video as we had the bolt in the way issue and the spare tire alignment issue. The only thing new I had was the tire got in the way and I had to lower it before doing the install to keep it out of the way. It was off center causing it to interfere. Thanks again!

Excellent! We're glad the video helped out. I remember this task and how angry I got that day when it wasn't just plug and play. You should have seen me when I was trying to install the wiring (the wrong harness came in the correct package). That was a pain in the rear too.

Came to see this install for the exact reason you guys struggled. I tried getting this installed in my driveway on my back by myself and I got the two front bolts in and ran in to that same STUPID grounding bolt. Had to take it down and do the same thing.

Thank you for watching! I'm bummed you didn't find the video before trying to save you the hassle of going through that. It was quite annoying wasn't it? I was quite peeved that day.

@@DrifterJourney Im pulling a heavy dump trailer so I opted for the nicer class III, which oddly enough said it was a direct bolt on and unlike the class II didn't require the removal of the bumper. I ended up cutting that damn lug off though- after that install, even on my back in the driveway solo was a breeze. Thanks again!!

Your trailer wiring video saved me quite a bit of heartache, we ended up getting it in just fine, but at one point we were going to quit because we couldn't get connector in on the passenger side. Seeing you do it allowed us to know it was possible rather than aborting the project halfway through. This video hopefully will save us some heartache too... going to grind down the grounding stud first. Thanks for making these videos!
@DrifterJourney
@DrifterJourney 2 года назад
That's awesome Mitch! We're glad you found the video helpful. Grinding down the stud was a pain but it got us a discount when we called and told the hitch company that it wasn't a direct bolt on as stated. Check your hitch to make sure they didn't fix that issue by creating a notch to go around the stud (before you start hacking). 😉

My 2018 Promaster did not come with a hitch, so…….I’m in a wheelchair so I am going to a dealer install mine. I’m going with the Draw- tite brand because it has the anti- rattle hole. I will do the wiring myself. You are correct about the factory option being $800+. Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz

Thanks for posting this install video. It took me just over 2 hours for the install too but well worth it. I found a sawzall made quick work on the ground bolt. The Curt 13207 is a very solid unit and fit my 2021 2500. I got mine through Autozone and it arrived at my door in 3 days. Happy travels

Hi, great job. Is the grounding stud what I think, to ground electrical?
@DrifterJourney

Thank you! Yep, that's what it looked like. My dad, who is an electrical engineer, agreed. Since we weren't going to use it, we felt OK grinding it off.

Thank you for your video. I’m having problems with the spare tire access. Did you bend the bracket or the nozzle? 10:32 mark in your video. I’m a little scared to bend the nozzle but if you got away with it, then I’ll give it a go.

It won't let me load the video on the airport wifi in Mexico but we didn't have to Bend anything. I definitely had to pull on it pretty good to get it to line up though! Thanks for watching and good luck on finishing up the job.

I got my passenger side bolt laid down and stuck. You mentioned it happening and taking about 5 minutes to get it out. What'd you do? It's connected to the fishwire and I don't have the spacer in there yet. It's just stuck on something in the frame.
@DrifterJourney
@DrifterJourney 3 года назад
Yeah, we did have issues with the bolt falling on it's side. Greg was able to use his finger and the fishwire to get it standing back up so that he could pull it back through the hole. If it's stuck on something in the frame, you might need a telescoping magnet tool or something similar to move it around so that you can maneuver it into a different spot and stand it back up. Best of luck to you!!

40 minute job hu..? Jk, I like y’all’s videos but the reason why you pay someone that can actually do the job in 20-40 minutes is because they probably have years experience of doing the same thing over and over, not to mention the tools needed to complete the job. Good job though finishing the job.

I was in SLC. Made reservations- ofc they collected money right away. they called move my reservation 5times on the day before I supposed to come. Then I had to picked up Parts 3 times to different locations bc their tech had emergencies… other locations did not have technicians when I came there. Why didn’t they call before sent me out. Then manager refunded my money- then told me waited for a year check back they will honor this contract and will give me discount for what I have been through. Called back they still dont have technicians. Told me call 1800 on website and they said they would not give me that price bc that manager is no longer with them and gave me mew quote with $215 more.
