It's not as much bagging on the country in my opinion, but rather the observation -- without judgment -- that the world at large is slowly homogenizing into an Americanized version of it.

They do a north America tour later this year so you could go and see them live. I was at my first Rammstein concert in Göteborg a few days ago and it was awesome. In the US they visit Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Boston, San Antonio and two days Los Angeles
Guys, maybe you are lucky.....if I am not mistaken they have several concerts this month in the US .............live is unspeakable the best .........you will never forget it.
In the video they sing: "This is not a love song" They do it not live. Obviously they do not want to go so far. And live they have that nice outro. You can watch videos from the educated marine, he does great translations over the clips.

Flake (Christian Lorenz) wrote two Autobiographical books. "Der Tastenficker" and "Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag" (It's The World Birthday Today). The second one is available in english. Both of them are absolutely awesome. Written in kind of naive style he analyses the world around him quite intelligently with a lot of self-irony. The first book is mostly about his youth in the GDR, as a guy that wasn't born with the best cards and his first east german punk band. The second book then is about his time with Rammstein with quite a lot of funny anecdotes.

Watch the official video of this song - it will help you to understand. This song is no criticism of America, not at all. It's more like a criticism of all the people around the globe who easily sell their heritage, traditions, uniqueness and so on for a Coca Cola - if you know what I mean. America - which stands for the United states of America - is a wonderful country, no doubt. But it's not everything. There's plenty more on this planet. Thanks Matt I thoroughly agree. The loss of identity as seen across the world with the onset of American nationalism and super power status certainly is sad. My opinion is that, and I might well be wrong, many countries are taking their identity back. I see that a lot in my opinion and some of the Nordic countries also in countries like Ireland Scotland etc. I’m not sure we can undo the damage with our you done. Till Lindemann is the singer, bass is played by Oliver Riedel, Paul Landers and Richard Z. kruspe plays guitar, christophe schneider is on the drums and christian "Flake" lorenz is on the track and keyboard. the guys have been playing together since 1994. the same line-up for almost 30 years. it's pretty decent for a band. Flake already has 2 books about his life as a member of Rammstein. it is also available as an audio book. maybe also in english. it is highly recommended. written with a lot of humor and humility and many anecdotes about the tours and life within the band

What? No hate song? Good things and bad things?? It very clearly IS kind of a hate song. It's clear citicism towards the US's cultural arrogance and cultural imperialism. Even in the historical context this was made during the Iraque war and Bush's statement of "You are either with us or with the terrorists" emphazising this mindset even more. Even the lyrics say "I know the very useful steps and I will protect you from missteps. And who does not want to dance at the end, does not know that he *must* dance" is not even debatably citicism towards the US eradicating countless culture and their world-police mindset of "helping" every lesser developed nation to become like it. Hell he even clearly only says "This is not a love song" multiple times. Sure the song uses much irony, but especially with the music video it shouldn't even be a question that this is 100% only negative. Same with Deutschland, absolutely *nothing* in the song says anything positive about Germany, it's not "good and bad things", it's a 100% negative criticism.

If you think it is 100% negative (as with Deutschland) then you are just plain wrong on both songs and missed their points. Saying "This isn't a love song", doesn't mean it is a hate song. And yes, it is a song bagging on America, 100%. Question is: what does the "America" in this song - as seen from a German band's perspective - stand for? Might as well have been a Dutch perspective btw, since that would be more or less the same. In Dutch, we have the terms "Amerikanisering" and "Amerikaanse toestanden" to describe the things imported here from the US which were/are seen as alien & harmful to our culture. American friends of ours happened to share much of the criticism, since they saw it as a threat to the America they loved as well. We found common ground in placing most of this in the context of globalism, with the US being used as a major force to spread it. I still believe there's much value in that general perspective. I also believe the critique in this song was actually rather modest, common knowledge and really nothing special. "Coca Cola, wonderbra".. if only those were the most pressing issues. Room for more substantial criticism is only hinted at with the mention of "sometimes war". This song was written during the war on Irak and it is criticism of Amerika' s cultural imperialism and wars. In the video they show the capitalist exports flooding other cultures. Even in Afrikan huts there's Coca Cola, Santa Claus etc. Also the US sometimes "exports" war and capitalizes on that too. They add a break where they sing "this is not a love song" sung in English so the blind patriots who will chant USA whenever you mention the country might wake up and notice what the song is actually about. This is critique, not hate, similar to what they did with Deutschland.

You should watch the official video. This song is a pretty sarcastic view on America. They criticize the "american way of life" brought to the rest of the world. Not everyone wants that. It's a kind of social imperialism. The official video was sung partially in English, to make you understand. "This is not a love song", says it all. The video was created during the Irak War. Actually it is a critism on the USA, regarding their ways of foreign policies. Almost nobody has an issue with the good parts such as ideas of democracy, new perspectives to look at things a different way and so on. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of US American cultural themes, that benefit other cultures. It just gets difficult, when they are being forced on. Sort of: my way, or the Highway. The song was a response to HOW the US reacted to the horrible attacks on 9/11.

Flake's (keyboarder) sparkling costume stinks like a plague because you can't wash it. Flake said that whenever they change their clothes before the concert, the other members of the band complain about the terrible, smelly costume. Flake could have a new one made, but he doesn't do it to annoy his bandmates, as they always annoy and brank him too. In return, the other Rammstein members always tease Flake by spraying very cold water on Flake's face through secretly modified nozzles during rehearsals of this song "Amerika" instead of glitter and confetti. Flake is then always pissed off. Flake always has fun explaining that he actually wouldn't have agreed to be a member of this "terrible" band with their "dull" music until today and that with the exception of Till he didn't like the other band members until today. That was actually the case in the beginning of the band, but in truth Flake could no longer live without Rammstein and Till's regular bullying on stage. Rammstein has been playing with the same line up for 30 years. This is extraordinary in music history

Nice reaction but not the best video to react to. You should try and research a bit before reacting (at least for other reactors). There's a reason everyone reacted to the official video in this case. This might be their worst song...or, at least my least favorite. Look into the old stuff, Weisses Fleiss (might be wrong spelling), Rammstein, Sehnsucht, Wolt Ihr das betten flammen sehen, Seemann... all classics and still played live today! The band are all certified and licensed pyrotechnicians. Fire has been their thing since the beginning! In those older live videos, you'll see all their hair is slicked back and white...thats bc the budget for flame retardant was small...they'd coat their hair in Desitin, the baby diaper rash.cream!!
