Native German Speaker here In the lyrics there is no indecision at all because in the lyrics is no "Yes and No" but only "No" the verse is literally word by word: You have me asked. (= German word order = broken down into You (Du), You have (Du hast), You have me (Du hast mich), You have me asked (Du hast mich gefragt) = basically "You have asked me" And I said nothing. (meaning "I didn´t reply to your question") the chorus is the church wedding vow which is asked by the priest to both of the couple seperately during the wedding ceremony directly before he declares the couple to be married - and - he answered the 2 questions of 1."eternal loyalty for the partner" 2 "eternal love for the partner" both with a clear "No" even twice 2 times (that´s very decisive and not indecisive..just saying)= basically he is blowing the wedding in front of the altar in the very last second. So basically the song implies that the girl dragged him in front of the altar without having his consent and so he left her right there in front of the altar. BUT there is an - auditive - word play in place in the first sentence by tricking the mind´s first thought in the way that sentence is performed...because as long as the in single words repeated broken down first sentence "You have asked me" isn´t finished with the last word "gefragt/asked" the sentence hasn´t the right context because it sounds as like as saying "You, You hate, You hate me" because "Du hast mich/You have me" and "Du hasst mich/You hate me" sounds exactly the same. (It´s kinda as like for instance saying in English "My, My deer, My deer has " but you very likely will mishear "My dear has" because it will be "your first thought" and only the last word will then reveal if it´s actually "dear" or actually "deer" by then finishing the sentence with the closing word "antlers" = that´s kinda how that worked with "Du hast") But in the aftermath of the song the misheard "You hate me" - although it wasn´t said - gets context because of the following chorus because the chorus implies that he left her at the wedding ceremony which is for her very likely a huge embarrassment..and for doing that to her she might hate him now. The open question is : Was he just mean...or... was he to such an extent under her thumb that only in the face of the altar he got finally his shit together and parted which he should have done way long ago.

Rammstein songs are usually pretty straight forward with their message if you take the lyrics literally. The deeper meaning behind their songs often get lost in translation. The song is actually about toxic relationships or even marriage and not an conflict in one persons mind.

@@NotBenCoultry Well, the whole sentence Till sings is "Du hast mich gefragt, und ich hab nichts gesagt." This means "You [have] asked me and I [have] said nothing." So "You have" is actually the name of the song and mostly what he is singing in the music, but of course he plays around with the similar sounding "You hate", so to an extent both are true here. There's also some other homophones he uses in this song to distort the meaning.

Almost every song has a deep meaning and I’m sure, that you’d like them - especially because of your psychological background. Therefore I‘d recommend the songs „Zeit“, „Angst“, „Deutschland“ and „Mein Herz brennt (piano Version)“. I‘d also recommend to look up the translation of the lyrics while watching. And please don‘t miss the outros :) Thanks again - and have fun 😊

Rammstein is known for their suggestive lyrics. Yes it’s a song about wedding and vows, but the feel of the song suggests it’s not a positive song. It’s embodied in the wordplay of ‘you hate me’ which becomes ‘you asked me and I didn’t answer’. The lyrics don’t say much, but combined with the harsh industrial sound, the meaning of Rammstein songs has to be felt imo.

to be honest, lyrically this isn't one of their deepest tracks. But their live shows are awesome, their music videos are absolutely stunning and many of their lyrics are much more deeper and have double and triple meanings. I subbed, waiting for more reactions to Rammstein - They are GREAT! Especially live! Edit: imagine a french croud singing german lyrics - nothing like that has ever happened before. The french (especially after WW2) are very restricted on their own language with laws how much foreign music is allowed to be played on their radio and how much has to be in french language - awesome what Rammstein did there.

The best way to get into Rammstein, is their live performances, dont get me wrong some of their music is absolute master class, but when you combine that with their stage show, chefs kiss. The funny thing is Du Hasst, live is probably their most tame live performance, aside from maybe Engel. Ooh and for a reccomendation Engel, Rammstein, live version A quick side note, Till Lindeman, is probably one of the most interesting frontmen out there. He is not just the lead vocalist, but also the bands lead pyrotechnician. Beyond that, he is an artist, pure and simple, if you should choose to watch Engel, pay close attention to his persona on stage, even if you shut off the music and just watched the video of his performance i think you might fully understand what he ks trying to convey, it is a bit haunting, and it doesnt end when the song ends, even the way that he exits the stage fewls like he is still very much in character.

Great reaction. I'm a fan since '97. The song that got me was "Engel"- Angel. It was such a unique sound. And they surprise and fascinate me to this day. Btw same lineup from the beginning. What fascinates me are the lyrics (most, not all song). A lot of them have double meaning. Which is a result where all bandmembers grew up, in the GDR. Most lyrics are written in a poetry style and a some are quite heavy subjects, taboos in western societies. They took a lot of heat for that. Society doesn't want to be bothered with taboos. Curious to see, what you think about songs like "Wiener Blut"- Viennese blood (Josef Fritzl), 'Ich tu dir weh"- I hurt you or "Mein Teil- my part"(Armin Meiwes). As well as lighter songs like "Seemann- Seaman" or "Frühling in Paris- spring in Paris", "Zeit-time". Looking forward to see more reactions from you to Rammstein. With love from Germany ❤🤘🏻

You don't have to be a good dancer, you've got seriously infectious energy. I have developed an appreciation for Rammstein, even without a clear understand of German, because they provide great performances and music that inspires non-German speakers to sing in German. That is a powerful sort of influence in itself. Perhaps THAT influence through music would be a good subject of analysis.

"Du Hast" is a love song, a heavy and kick-ass love song, but a love song just the same. A lot of their songs are if in a melancholy way, particularly "Ohne Dich" [Without You] and "Strib Nicht Vor Mir" [Don't Die Before I Do].

If you say to someone in German: Du hasst mich, that does mean: You hate me. The sentence change its meaning with "gefragt". That means in english: You have asked me (Du hast mich gefragt)

As a native german speaker, I‘d like to point out the ambiguity that gets lost in translation. „Du hast“ („You have“) and „Du hasst“ („You hate“) sound similar in german. The way it‘s being sung here, it sounds more like „Du hasst“ („You hate“) to me. So it sounds like: Du (You) Du hasst (You hate) Du hasst mich (You hate me) Du hast mich gefragt (You have asked me) During the first three lines, tension builds up, and it seems to be about someone being hated. At the forth line, now it‘s about someone being asked (that is, someone being proposed to marry).

Smile Till likes to play word games. He starts with "You have or you hate" (In German you can't tell the difference if the context is missing.) then "You have me or you hate me" Only with the following sentence does it become clear that he means “have”. >> "You asked me!" His answer is: "And I did not say anything!" What follows is a German wedding formula. The registrar speaks the formula/question, and the female side answers with "Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss"....the male side answers with a harsh "NO!!!" etc. etc...

I'm a 72 year old geezer rocker. Grew up on Cream, Clapton, Hendrix, Stones, Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Hot Tuna and many others. Saw all of those listed except the Stones and Hendrix. I watched a reactor react to Rammstein doing Rammstein from a NYC concert recently. All I can say is WOW ! ! - - I'd go see a Rammstein show tomorrow. At my age it's no longer , sex, drugs and rock n roll - - now just sex and rock n roll ! ! Retired is the only way to go.

Rammstein concerts are a kind of heavy metal opera. After watching one of the songs where they literally set people on fire (Benzin/Rammstein-Rammstein/Ich tu Dir weh/Mein Teil), you'll probably need a therapist to talk about what you've just have seen on stage.

The original German wedding vows in a church is a question and answer ritual. In German "Willst du bis der Tod euch scheide, treue sein für alle Tage?". Translated into English "Will you be faithful until Death do you part?" I hope I remembered the archaic or traditional English form correctly. However, the Singer Till during the live version switches it up by exchanging two words that sound very similar. "Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide treue sein für alle Tage?" In German using a minuscule s instead of a capital S switches "scheide" from "to part" or "to split" to "Scheide" which is literally a sheath or split. However it is the German medical term for a female 'split', a vagina. So here he is asking "Will you be faithful until the death of the vagina?" which certainly has significantly different connotations than the original. There's a further double entendre. The original ritual poses the question to the spouse "Willst du sie lieben und ehren in guten wie in schlechten Tagen?". Translated this question is "Will you love and honor her in good days as well as in bad?" Again, my apologies for misremembering the exact English phrase. However, Till asks "Willst du sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen?" However, the usually fastidiously OCD Till when it comes to pronunciation here slurs it a bit, just enough to potentially mishear it as "an" instead "in". In which case the meaning in German changes from good or bad days to "bad days of her period". Because to "have your days" refers to having your period. What "bad days of a period" means should be self-explanatory for women. Mind you, the ethereal female voice in the backgrounds always answers "yes" while the male chorus is always a very emphatic "NO!". This dichotomy of different answers plus the German grammatical sentence structure makes this song's lyrics much more multi-dimensional than in English. While the English translation isn't inherently wrong, it simply can't transport the multiple meanings both implied as well as intentionally changed of the German lyrics.

Imagine these guys growing up before the berlin wall fell in the 80s, in the east part of germany, so they had zero access to cd disc, only way for them to hear different music was on radio or sometimes on television, there was literally only german folk music on the "russian" side of germany post the war. How they break themself free, and made their first album (production) in sweden and the rest is history

@HeartSupport There is a play on words that is clearly overlooked her, but you have to be quite fluent in German to hear it. "Du hast mich" can be heard both as "...you have me..." and "...you hate me..." and it is only when you hear the last part of the sentence you clearly hear the content "... you asked me... and I said nothing"

a few things, this song is about loyalty and how it can be loyalty to your spouse, partner or country and sometimes that loyalty is only one way, some people are saying it is a play on words of hast/haast (have/hate), no that is not the case. The red stuff is fire retardant gel, as they use a lot of fire in their shows. Til Lindemann is a certified pyrotechnician. The keyboardist has ADHD and uses the treadmill to keep focus. He can walk around 20km per show.

Either she says "Yes" or the Choir subtly in the background, thus making it a song against the Church ie institutions that make us do something we don't want to Rammstein are perfect in decisively delivering controversial or ambiguous messages, that's perhaps the most underrated parts about them :)
