When it comes to Rammstein, even while reading the lyrics, the meaning of their songs isn't always immediately clear. They often use a great deal of symbolism.
Funfact: "Sonne" was originally written as an entrance song for the boxer Vitali Klitschko. "Klitschko" was also working title for this song. He didn't use it, because it was too heavy ;)
I’d like to take a moment to say the refrain in this song provides an excellent example of the linguistic relationship between English and German. “Hier kommt die sonne.” “Here comes the sun.” Despite containing vast numbers of borrowings from French and Latin, the English language is actually a member of the Germanic Language Family, which includes such languages as Dutch, German, Swedish, Danish, and others. Of all of them, English has undergone the greatest amount of differentiation, especially with the influx of French loanwords, but simple and common words in English shed light on its actual linguistic classification. For example, the following three sentences contain no loanwords from French, Latin, or Greek: “Did you see that huge bird fly past?” “I can’t believe his house doesn’t have a deck. It would be great for sitting outside and stargazing!” “I don’t want to be a burden, but I forgot my keys at home and was wondering: could you give me a ride to work?“ Hope someone finds this interesting! :)
Past is of Latin origin I believe, coming from passus: step As for star, the ressemblance with stellar, also Latin, or Aster: Greek, leads to an older, proto European origin ☝️🥸
@@jetaddicted You’re absolutely right about “past”! Totally slipped my mind. As for “star,” it’s well attested among Germanic languages and as such, as you pointed out, goes back to a shared origin from Proto-Indo-European. While it may not stand out as being specially preserved within Germanic languages, it still fits for use in an example statement highlighting English without influence from Latin or Greek. Anyway, always nice to see another person with a passion for linguistics. Definitely made my night! And since you do seem to enjoy linguistics and etymology, maybe you’ll find this fun fact interesting. In addition to linguistics in general I have spent several years now studying Sumerian, and one really fun language fact I love to share is this: There are very few words from Sumerian which have managed to make their way into extant languages, except one. “Cumin.” That’s right, that practically ubiquitous spice in so many cuisines. In English the term comes from Greek _kuminon_ , which was borrowed form Akkadian _kamunu_ , derived from Sumerian _gamun_ “cumin, the cumin seed.” Variations of the term are now found in countless languages. Crazy :) PS. Is your name a Fallout reference? If so that’s just another reason you’re amazing!
If someone gets an overdose from Heroin Its called "Der Goldene Schuss" in Germany " It translates to " The Golden Shot" in English. That makes the Overdose on gold a bit clearer I hope.
Rammstein is a treat for the ears and eyes as well. Their videos and lives are always full of visual ideas. And they're also certified pyrotechnicians.True artists.
Uh, I was a heroin addict for 23 years, and I've never heard of that. The gold in lines, then a needle is just a way to illustrate our addiction to money.
I was 14 when my crush at the time introduced me to this song and video and... Yes. Oh my god. Just yes.. will forever love this. It got better when I learned German! F*cking Rammstein man ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I love that you talked about the lyrics. The singer, Till Lindemann, pretty much writes all the lyrics and can be considered a proper poet. They are full of symbolism, double meanings and references to literature and culture which sadly can only be fully appreaciated by German native speakers or ppl with a very good grasp of the language.
There's an interesting perspective of this song I read a long time ago. So the song was originally intented to be the entrance song an Ukrainian boxer that the band really loved, with all the references to the sun shining out of his hands, blinding, burning, while the world counts to 10 (the countdown). The fighter ended up picking an American song called "I'm the best" or something. So I feel this song shows the band's reaction to their favorite boxer picking up a cheesy american song, with them working as little dwarfs and crafting a golden ring Snow White throws away. Of course, that's minus the spanking and the gold-sniffing.
I love your reactions. The story behind this one is that it was originally meant to be a theme song for a German boxer but that fell through so they turned it into this. It's one of my all time favorites.
Hey man I really enjoy your videos and your ability to be open minded and enjoy the "different". You truly enjoy the aspects of being a human being and I appreciate it. Much love from South Florida...
Fun Fact: Rammstein produced the music for a Boxer (probably Vitali Klitschko, he was a German Boxer, thats why the count to 10 at the begin of the music), but something went wrong and they a problem: Everything was ready. They had the Lyric, an idea for the Music-Video etc. They decided to use the Lyric but create a whole new Clip, that fits with the Lyric itself. Just Watch the making off of that clip and you'll see it😊
This was one of my favorites for a long time. And I mean sweaty, coal dust covered Till.. What could possibly be more satisfying. Glad you are getting to experience them and that we get to see it! Love it!
Though this isn't a genre I can just sit and listen too, I do really love Rammstein! Not only is their music rock solid but their sense of irony, twisted humor and CREATIVITY are legendary. Watching that first minute of video, who would ever dream where it was headed? Then after grabbing you with the the story theme, the twist it more and more! LOVE IT!!!
If it helps, according to Till Lindemann, the song was originally written as an entrance song for the boxer Vitali Klitschko, whose surname was also the working title of the song.
Unfortunately Klitschko's management rejected the song as too hard. The sun is shining out of my hands it can burn, it can blind you all when it breaks out of the fists it/she lays down hotly on the face it/she will not set tonight and the world counts loudly to ten
Rammstein's music videos often add a whole new dimension to their songs, even if they don't directly pertain to the subject of the lyrics. They're definitely worth watching, because they're always brilliant.
@Matthew Bousum Those are precisely two of the worst Ramstein videos. Completely gay. 🤮 Better try: "Ohne Dich", "Ich will" and "Mein Herz brennt". And of course "Amerika".
I was in to Rammstein at the same time hip hop groups like Outkast were big. I knew fans in both demographics would like each other's music if they just listened but it was never marketed that way. Excellent video.
I love this group this is about my favorite song by them and your reactions are almost textbook for everybody I've turned on to this. Their videos are great!!
This song was originally written for the two Klitschko brothers! That's why they are counting from one to ten. That also explains the part " she won't go down tonight" and there are more parts relating to a fight. It is an incredible creative piece of music! With the beat greetings from Berlin😊😍
Greatest band in the world.... Between bangin' music that trancends language, the amazingly imaginative music videos and what can I say about the best concert givers in history....
My FAVORITE Rammstein song!! Hopefully going to see them in September in San Antonio live for the first time, if all this Coronavirus stuff blows over by then..
You can never do something wrong when watching their live videos..and you can never do something wrong when watching their official videos. Always high quality. All of them are creative like movies. Try more of them.
When I first moved to Germany over 20 years ago, I started listening to them and learnt a lot of my German via their music. Thanx for doing a reaction to this.
I tell this story every time, but when i first saw this song on TV when i was 11/12 i found an empty VHS and sat waiting for it to come back around again so i could record it, nothing was more important to me that day :P.
Hey Jamel I just love how your so open mind listen to all kind music and I enjoy watching your videos...Hey you should give Alter bridge a try especially Black Bird I promise you you won’t regret it💜💜💜💜
@@ARojas-dg2ce Bruh, pretty sure they're referring to the modern usage of the term in a socioeconomic sense and not to what it meant a literal millennium ago
I’m so happy you did this. This is one of my favorite Rammstein songs and the video is a masterpiece! Check out “Heirate Mich“ if you dare! Ha ha! “Reise, Reise“ or “Rosenrot” are also well worth a listening to. The one absolute must-watch is “Amerika”. Too awesome! Thanks again! 😎🤘
When you get the chance, read the story behind what the mental imagery was supposed to be behind this video. Til and the gang are nothing short of freaking geniuses and using the fairy-tale style story to grant the idea of an almost childlike need for the love of the woman who's destroying you is amazing. Keep in mind, though, that Til had a really difficult relationship with his mother, so that's where much of this comes from. Dude, you've GOT to hear "Mein Hertz Brent" (forgive my spelling), you want the one that's got the heavy middle section - it'll mess with you, just to give you fair warning. Remember, Rammstein tells a story with their videos and goes to the edge every time. Have fun on this new trail through Rammstein! To quote a description of Rammstein: "Metal bands jam, Rammstein destroys!"
Never fails to amaze me how "outsiders" react to things I deem normal -- and I don't mean to offend, I am just happy to have this little weird world of mine, and that others can cherish it as well :)
Till Lindemann (singer) said this was originally written as the entrance song for Vitaly Klitschko, a former Ukrainian boxer. However during the final mastering the bassist decided to mix it with the original Disney Snow White, due to it playing in the background. So it just sort of stuck.
All of Rammstein's videos are incredible. There has never been a band so committed to the conceptual and performance aspects of their music videos. Could Jamal be brave enough to comment on their video for 'Pussy'?
Great reaction, as always! Rammstein has been my favorite bad on this planet since 1998! Such an amazing, talented band. That said, another favorite of mine is Sabaton! You REALLY need to give them a reaction. I recommend something like "Night Witches," "Carolus Rex," or "Cliffs of Gallipoli!" They sing about history, and it's amazing!
My favorite band, great music and lyrics, that are not always clear on the first or second glimpse, great creative and sometimes weird and tabooish videos... Thanks for checking them out... Greetings from Germany :)
