Yeah, just imagine how much stuff like this we were missing at this time. All those amazing clips that we can enjoy today, special thanks to youtube =)
Joey often did screaming out his live vocals, so he mostly got a sore throat while the shows - especially in the early years. He becomes stronger later on. You can hear (and see) that Joey's voice ist down. I guess that's why Dee Dee took over.
That date isn't right. Johnny's playing his White Mosrite Ventures II Slab here, which he didn't buy until the week from October 22 - 28, 1977. He would have been playing the Blue one if this was October 6, 1977 (Blue was stolen on Oct 21 or 22, which prompted the purchase of the White one.)
As this is the controversial version of the song I was supprised to see it captured live @ CBGB's . People should understand that Joey was part Jewish & him writing this song about Hitler was along the lines of a Punk Rock Mel Brooks poking fun @ Nazis. Especially changing Hitler's " today Europe" to "today your love" . The Ramones were a great & influencial band & having met both Joey & Dee Dee I can say they were great as people especially towards those around them and were witty & intelligent human beings.
I was always told what I had commented was true , however what you just posted rings true IMO . There was a lot of Nazi imagery in the early punk movement even though the majority of punks weren't Nazis . Many wore Nazi armbands for shock value, I can understand that though personally I wouldn't ever wear 1 myself. So based on what you posted " Long way back to Germany " was Not about 1 of Joeys girlfriends ? Sorry as I listened to one of my friends who used to hang w/Dee Dee while he was still alive & I'm afraid I've taken alot of myths to be truths. TY for the info & I stand corrected .
Percy Barbarossa As much as you said before, Dee Dee still wrote 100% if the song. He was born and partially raised in Germany, therefore he was picked on for being German when he was a "little German boy".
@PercyBarbarossa as a thumb rule you should notice that if it was killer song with killer hooks and killer lyrics (often related to military stuff or drugs) with at breakneck speed, it was to 90 percent from Dee Dee
this is the original version of the song, the one on the first album had the one line changed to “i’m a shock trooper in a stupor” but live they always sang “i’m a nazi, baby” in fact, i’ve never heard a live rendition of the album version of this song. the 40th Anniversary edition of the first album has the original version of the song.
In case some of you are wondering what the lyrics are, they are: I'm a zombie baby I'm a zombie yes I am, A Nazi zombie, you know that I'll bite off your head, I'm a zombie baby I'm a zombie yes I am, A Nazi zombie, you know I'll dine on your father's land.
If you ask a casual music fan to name the early punk bands, they’ll probably say Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, and one other random one, maybe the Stooges. Ramones were the only true punks. Bunch of Jewish weirdos from Forest Hills emulating doowop and singing about being SS soldiers. Did it straight through for decades and croaked the second they stopped. The rest were all manufactured, boy bands, rich kids, art school, etc
