The split Rams Horn Scroll is a great exercise in trying to achieve symmetrical forgings. This video was originally done for the Black Bear Forge II channel and is being shared with the larger audience here at Black Bear Forge

That seems a lot easier than splitting it first and drawing out the horns separately, which is the first way I learned this. Hard to get them even and symmetrical doing them separate.

This is wonderful for beginners such as my daughter and BFF who are apprenticing; although I've only 2 years experience in forging, it was great finding you. I've made a Playlist of your work, and am very grateful for all you share on your channel. Best wishes, Wendi UK

Love this quick video showing the hook and some of the work but really love your longer videos where you “teach” the art of blacksmithing through instruction. It’s the reason I watch your content more than any other blacksmith. Most do videos like this without the commentary and teaching what is being done. I don’t mind taking the time to watch a longer video and “learn” why you do what you do. Keep up the great work. I wish there were more guys like you out there.

I've been in a hook mood as of late too! Recently I made a cross peen leaf and an astromorph hook, it's an alien from the book all tomorrow's. Big Ole ears... I'm working on my next "actual video" for my second channel. Gonna post there, and make one. I wanna attempt to join the community of "RU-vid smiths" as Roy might say. I'm a novice and wish to share my stuff, and possibly even pay it forward with the help I've received from you, and others. My ideah is "by the novice for the novice". I imagine I'm not the first to try this, but I still would like to engage myself. I've heard you and Roy talk about how it's better to be more than a "shop/business" and be the real human. Even if I don't make a dime, I'm gonna keep on plugging away at the craft. As well with the channel idea, I thought it might lend another perspective to fellow beginner/novice/intermediate smiths. Where similarities in our practice can be applied, red green style hacks and such. A couple people on the blacksmithing reddit page said I should go for it. Idk, it may be a flop but I think it would be fun, another point to it all. Oh and great hook and video. Music was a nice touch for the ending. My weekly rant is finally over... 🍻

Maybe this has been addressed in a previous video and I have missed it. As a beginner I hope I’m at least asking good questions. Has there ever been a video on proper hammer control? I’ve heard industry professionals say it’s okay to choke up on your hammer, and those who say you can hurt yourself in the long run, some say to use large hammer, some a smaller weight. I know there are different weights for different jobs, just kind of looking for some guidance on the control, hand position, moving my shoulder, whole body, etc. thank you. @blackbearforge has been fundamental in getting me started in this journey along with my father-in-law who encouraged it to begin with. Thanks.

John, I always enjoy watching you at your craft. Was that a mild steel cap on the bottom of your treadle hammer?

Another great project! Since I only have access to a propane forge, I always get a little nervous when one of the steps of a project leaves me with a T-shape 😅 But this one looks manageable, and the results are fantastic!
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 2 года назад
That is one of the down sides to working with propane. But a torch can often provide the heat for little adjustments.
@vicmeyers1243
@vicmeyers1243 2 года назад
Why does it seem like the steel your working on stays hot much longer than the steel I work on? Hi carbon vs low carbon?
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 2 года назад
Probably starting off a bit higher heat. The type of steel doesn't change how long it stays hot. But work energy from the hammer will keep it hot a little longer. If you work outside the air movement would also cool material off faster.
