Ramsey RE 8000 Winch Receiver Mount: Do Not Do The Things I Do

Ramsey makes a good winch and today we fabricate a simple receiver mount to make an old RE-8000 much more versatile. Any truck with a 2'' receiver can now use this as an accessory. A set of welding cables have yet to be made into a power cord, but once that's completed it will be ready to provide winching capability around the place and even remotely on other sites.
I must stress that retrieval work of vehicles or machinery can be somewhat treacherous and even a bit dangerous when working with stressed cables, winches and inferior welds..so don't attempt to do it with a home made rig such as this. This is only for my own personal off road use in and around the woods and shop. That, my friends, is my official disclaimer. Enter at your own risk, the floor is slippery when wet, don't use an electric drill in the swimming pool and whatever you do, do not build this with a 110v Harbor Freight MIG and go into the auto recovery business.... That exercise may result in your death or worse, that of someone else !! Now for myself, this is going to be just fine, because I intend on keeping a close eye on the stress points and if it begins to go south, I will stop and beef it up to a much safer level. #ramsey, #hypertherm, #welder

Most excellent Wendell! I always admire how you take scrap and junk and turn it into something useful. Looking forward to seeing the receiver mounted wench in operation!

Ain't nothing more aggravating to need one and not have it. Sometimes you just can't get right up to something to hook onto with the truck...ya need to drag it a bit closer. We've had to get really creative on occasion with chains, cables and snatch blocks to get something out of a hole.

Looks good buddy! I worked at Ramsey back in 97 & 98. Made a lot of parts for those old winches.

That's cool. Ramsey make a heavy winch, no doubt. But I fried a few solenoids on this one so it came off the deckover gooseneck and set on the shelf for a decade or so.

Slick setup Wendell. I was just gifted a 12K LB winch so I'm going to steal your idea 😁👍

Oh heck yeah. I just saw another 12K Badlands on FB for a hundred bucks. I was thinking I should pick that one up too....just for the heck of it. Good luck Matt with your project. I'm sure with your attention to detail, it will turn out perfectly !

I have a tough one to move soon as this is wired in. I'm hoping this is gonna work like I want it to for that exercise. I'm thinking I gotta tie the front of the truck to a tree though. Enjoy your Sunday Tom.

I'm planning on a permanent install on the front end of the old '85 Ford flatbed...eventually. I like this idea because we can swap it easily from truck to truck between my two and my son's F350 and the SIL's F250.

Looks good! Yeah, those 110V mig machines were one of the best and worst things invented. Too many people use one of them and think they're a Welder after a couple minutes. Hey! You actually got to use a work bench near the end of the video! Reminds me of my shop, all flat surfaces get covered! 🤣🤣🤣

I agree. For thin stuff you can't beat a HF cheapie and with flux core they are very portable to carry to rooftops for certain repairs. Well...about the workbench...I had to move a bunch of stuff to use it though. The Missus had a quick project for me that required the use of the table saw/workbench. LOL. Of course she did. Always times her requests 'just right' !!

Man yeah Mr Wendell, that is a slick setup!! I cheaoed out on fabrication and bought the mount, but I love that idea of the receiver!! Ole grinder took some juice away from the light at the 4:50 mark 😉😉😁😁 Cant wait to see what you are moving!! I have used mine a few times off thr trailer too!! Boy my gopro wasn't a month old when I realized how easliy sparks and kend dont mesh!! Thank you sir for bringing us along!! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving 😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🦃🦃

Yeah, I hate it when the sparks melt into my glasses. They get real bad if I am not real careful. But the camera lens is just plain painful. Good to hear from you Nelson...I see another summer's farming is behind us and you got a little new 'color' in your line of tractors too. Awesome. I hope Thanksgiving with the family was relaxing as it was enjoyable Nelson. Thanks for the visit. Yeah...I've been slipping on keeping up with ALL my favorite channels.

I have a 2500 lb winch that was purchased 12 years ago so I could mount it on the 8N. One of those someday jobs. As far as the solinoids is there a situation where the solenoid isn't centering in the coil under load. I ran into a machine that someone "fixed" a motor starter and replaced the coil with one that was a little shorter. The coil couldn't center the armature but it kept trying. The guy went through all the coils on the shelf before he gave up and asked why it didn't work.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 7 месяцев назад
I don't think that's an issue but if these burn up too that is something to look closer at. I'm thinking Ramsey is using China made solenoids. They appear to be unmarked. I opened one to find the contacts pretty well melted. They do not appear to be what you would call robust in size.
@OldSneelock
@OldSneelock 7 месяцев назад
@@tractorman4461I think if they are burnt that you are right. When they don't center they pull too much current and overheat the winding. Never had one burn the holding contacts they just swell and crack the potting.

I have my 12k bad land very similar. Put 2 receiver's on the gooseneck and 1 on front of my service truck. Can't tell you how many times I've used it. Thanks for sharing
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 7 месяцев назад
Now THAT's a setup Tim. I am kinda planning on a permanent install on the front bumber...but at the same time I like this a bit because my son and son in law can easily slip it on their trucks too. Also, I never thought of making a 2'' receiver on the front... That'd be a good idea for intermittent use too. Thanks for the additional input.

That is so slick!!! That will definitely come in handy moving dead trackers and possibly pulling out stumps! @@gaspumprob now Rob…be careful niw. You’re making me blush a little. LOL Btw I think I told you I gave a buddy one of those small gas pumps that go on a farmers tank or a commercial contractors tank ..?? I think it was a GasBoy. Well this evening he sent me pics of a porcelain sign off a local old business he just found. It’s got a good size piece of a tree truck grown to it. He’s refurbishing the sign and putting some wood preservative on the tree. It’s going inside his shop soon as it’s done. I thought you’d like the story.
