I was an "extra" extra on the movie Ran. I was an exchange student at Sophia[Jochi] University in Tokyo and a member of the Kyudo[Japanese archery] club. Regular extras, untrained in archery, had burnt down a $50,000 castle set by accidentally shooting fire arrows into the papier-mâché base faked as stone. So calls went out to all the university Kyudo clubs for volunteers to work as extras. After several phone calls it was determined that I, a foreigner, and the half of the club that wore glasses could work but the girls could not. Ran was shooting on the lower slopes Mount Fuji. They dressed us in samurai armor, quickly made us up. A person came by and splashed us with muddy water and fake blood to "age" us, some of us had to flop down or kneel in a mud puddle. Then we waited and waited. In the end, we were never used since the previous fire arrow scenes were shot in bright sunlight so they shot cavalry scenes all that overcast day. Several other university clubs on different days actually got in the movie, while even more were never used like us. They still paid us and gave us a delicious bento[boxed lunch]. Best ever day skipping school. I like Ran but rank "Seven Samurai" among my favorite movies.

One of the most profound things I have ever heard was a line from Kyoami: "Man is born crying. When he has cried enough, he dies." A perfect jester in his ability to observe the human condition.

Jester? Hardly. The sorrow in man is easily tracked, and our struggles to survive and thrive is perhaps only taken as jesting in the hearts of the one who finds it amusing. But a better muse awaits: the wailing of eternity may not be far from any of us: that is a most grave testament about our lost condition.

What's incredible is that this movie was almost never made, as Kurosawa had an existential crisis and contemplated suicide after a period of unsuccessfulness. Thank God this came to be, because I truly consider it one of the best movies of all time, and a defining achievement for Kurosawa.

I'm old enough to have seen "Ran" in its original theatrical run in the 1980s, and I was shaken for life. But what impacted me the most was the silent battle scene. In the original theatrical cut, it was ACTUALLY silent. Not a sound, just total silence enhancing the horrors unraveling on the screen. The music turned up was added only later, for the home video editions, lest people would think the tape or DVD was defective. It's still a powerful effect, but it was even more impressive when it was totally silent.

@@bushidoblues9302, also, every battle has a decisive shot, the one that either turns the tide or consolidates an ongoing victory. In "Ran", that "bang!" was the first sound heard after the silence. The effect was mind-numbing. One doesn't need a Ph.D. in cinema to see that only a complete genius could have thought of that. Of all the Kurosawa films I've seen, I found only "Rhapsody in August" to be "meh" and unworthy of his talent. "Dreams" is a complete delight (I want that funeral when I die or I'm not coming!), "Kagemusha" is perhaps even more visually stunning than "Ran", "The Seven Samurai" is so complex that one sees a different film every time, and I wonder why people aren't talking more about "Dersu Uzala", which is not only a masterpiece of its own, but was well ahead of its time and the 2020s are the time for it (I'm sure Greta Thunberg would love it!).

Then I watch some of his other films including The Seven Samourai which remained my favourite for a long while, because it's truly a storytelling masterpiece which made me wonder if Kurosawa could control the weather, for real xD. And then 3 months ago during my country's lockdown I watched Ran again. And oh god how it became my favourite. Now I think I'll end up like you, and watch that film once a year. After that I watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy again which I had not seen for like 7 years, and I could not find a fight scene that ressembled the beauty and despair I felt watching the castle raid scene. Manga and anime as "works of art" is like a child's rhyme compares to the poetry of Tennyson or Yeats. It's like nursery tune compares to the music of Bach. It's like holding up manga and anime to Caravaggio and Monet.
@endy5828
@endy5828 2 года назад
@@frankkolton1780 Well, I wouldn't necessarily compare it to that, different mediums but I understand what you're trying to say. If i had to compare anime and manga to anything, it would most likely be film, there are some that I would recommend you read like Berserk by Kentaro Miura and for anime, Cowboy Bebop by Shinichiro Wantanabe. its a very beautiful medium that deserves recognition, just look at the art of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure by Hirohiko Araki, it was good enough to be featured at the Louvre in Paris, France, hes also had a collaboration with the fashion brand Gucci. Just because it isn't ancient like Classical Music or Painting does not mean it can't be a woirk of art.

"Ran" is a stunning piece of filmmaking. And utterly gorgeous to look at. Though "Kagemusha" is, for me, a more compelling story. BUT... "Shakespeare plays are usually very tragic and usually never have a happy ending" is a woefully benighted - and wildly inaccurate - generalization.
@bushidoblues9302
@bushidoblues9302 3 года назад
Yes I should have worded it differently, Shakespeare has plenty of comedies. I was just pointing out how he is better known for his tragedies, hence the creation of the term Shakespearean tragedy. This is partly do to his basing of stories off of historical events.

I remember watching this movie randomly late at night, when I was exhausted and no one was home. I was amazed by the beauty- before it stuck with me for how bleak and dreadful it became. I've seen horror movies and thrillers, I've seen plenty of movies try their hardest to be serious and be like "isn't THIS dark?" but this movie... stayed with me. It proved to me that movies that are colorful and beautiful are unable to become haunting. The ending really just put a bad taste in my mouth, the fact that the king died, and the blind brother had no idea his sister wasn't coming to get him... and he was on a cliff with no idea how to get down... for some reason that just really messed with me. It was so cruel... I absolutely love this movie. I don't know why it effected me this way, maybe it was a mixture of the exhaustion and the fact that I wasn't in a great place when I saw it but I'll never forget it, and the lesson that "colorful doesn't always mean happy or kind."
@Eyes-of-Horus
@Eyes-of-Horus Год назад
I agree. Every scene in the film looked like a beautiful and colorful painting. But to me the most stunning scene was the battle scene as the cloud coming over the attacking army --- and running it in slow motion with no sound was brilliant. That made it most amazing. Many men who have been in battles describe them as going so fast as seeming like slow motion and having so much noise that sound just seems to disappear.
