"Kuroswa even seems to argue that it is inevitable: that ultimately, our conscience is more powerful in keeping us connected [to the nature of things], than our ego is in keeping us attached" - this one is so optimistically powerful - simply beautiful
It's a tragedy that audiences missed the messages in one of my favorite Kurosawa movies - "Dodes'ka-den". It's Kurosawa's analysis and expansion of the line from John Milton's "Paradise Lost": “The mind is its own place and, in itself can make a heaven of hell or a hell of heaven."
Kurosawa is the greatest director of all time. He is the only director who could capture and distill the essence of great literary works of Shakespeare and Doestoyevsky. Nobody can even beat him in the grandness of his visual power. And his story-telling envelopes our head and warms our heart. A filmmaker who makes use of great a many poetic devices. I pay homage to one of the greatest artists of all time. He is definitely like Leonardo da Vinci Shakespeare, Doestoyevsky and Bethoveen.
Once I read a text about the influences of Kurosawa in cinema, the tittle could't be more fitting: Kurosawa teach us to protect the weak. And it's one of the most beautiful things that can be said about this man.
Why do you make such beautiful videos? I cried watching this. We all feel too lost in the labyrinth of our minds, not realising that we can just turn back and exit it alltogether.
Im rather sad i didnt find out about all these filmmakers when i was younger because theyre not well known in my country. But im glad i discovered them thru the internet and this channel. Keep up the good work!
@@nc8982 what I’m interpreting from this, is that he means that the lessons that these films share would have been greatly useful in the past, If that’s the case then I can relate, there’s a lot of life lessons I wish I knew when I was younger.
I know that you may have heard this many times in the comments, but honestly, this is definitely my favorite channel on RU-vid. I live in Venezuela, so getting access to an outside bank account is really hard, but when I´m able to earn enough money to sustain myself comfortably, I'd love to become a patron :)
That’s the one big one I haven’t seen, I guess the 3 hour runtime intimidates me, (which is weird because Seven Samurai was my first of his). No matter what, I don’t think Ikiru can be beat for me, but I’ll give red beard a go.
Kurasawa is quickly becoming my favorite director of all time. I didnt think any of his movies could be better than 7 samurai but I just watched Ikiru and I absolutely loved it. I wish more of his movies were easily attainable.
More than the wonderful and brilliant film director he was, Kurosawa is above all, a quiet, deep-thinking humanist and philosopher. The world is blessed to have Kurosawa as a filmmaker.
you absolutely crushed it. blew my mind. opened my heart. touched my soul. this is poetry in analysis. analysis in poetry. i cant put words to it. masterful work. i am just getting into kurosawa so this video is spot on for me. thank you so much.
Every element, and every force, never play alone. We should not think any differently in regards to each other’s minds, it is only in others that we find ourselves!
I went ahead and watched my first Kurosawa film, "Ran" and was blown away. It's such a great film and damn... what a sad ending. Thanks for making these videos and putting me on to this director.
A wonderful video about a truly transcendentally talented director! Everyone knows Seven Samurai & Rashomon (as well they should), but I think perhaps his most moving work was Ikiru. Well done, as always - your videos are the best things on RU-vid!
I made a 20min long presentation on Shakespearean stories borrowed by Kurosawa, presented in a different cultural and historical settings. It was part of my high school graduation exam (presentation on freely chosen topic was a compulsory component of final exams 15 years ago in Poland). I absolutely loved working on it and the topic fascinated exam board so much that they were asking me additional questions after the exam part was over. Can't wait to watch this video. I will probably rewatch some of the classics, it's been a while since I've seen any Kurosawa Movie. Oh, also, my dog's name is Akira :)
Wonderful. I didn't see that aspect of Kurosawa's films. You brought it so beautifully. It is, indeed, a matter of identity. We believe we are this or that, and build our lives upon this fragile belief, this mask, this net of lies, this persona, this sense of me. We don't trust who we really are, and cannot trust one another because we know they lie to themselves as we do to ourselves. As Gandhi would say: "there are no way to trust, trust is the way".
Honestly love these videos. They are so beautifully edited and written, and the way you speak about the subjects of your videos is so informative and the lexicon you employ so interesting. Makes me want to watch every kurosawa movie in one sitting and appreciate it from the point of view you have helped provide. Thank you for all your effort!
Thank you so much for this. Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors. And this video was fantastic. Every single video you make in ths channel is a tresaure. You always encourage me to see a movie more deeply, not just for entertainment. I learn about life and about me. Some movies are good lessons of life, and Kurosawa was one of the best teachers in my opinion. Thanks. (Sorry for my english...I am learning)
your love of film and story and how it deepens meaningful living is so inspiring and infectious. Thank you so much for what you do 🙏🏽 my Kurosawa box set has been gathering dust for years because it felt too heavy, I’ve been watching mostly ‘easy’ films recently - as you remind me of the reward and the richness of the greats, I’m so excited to dig out that box set and truly enjoy it 🥰
This is my favourite video of yours, I can tell how much care and passion went in to this. Also, you captured the beauty of Kurosawa’s cinema. I’ll have to show this to all my friends, thank you
When I as a man need a good cry, I come to your videos, you make such moving videos with such an insightful view. I know that we wouldn't agree on everything, but I know that your vision and views move me in such meaningful way, keep up the great work. Dont stop being you, you are a great artist and philosopher, and I feel like we need more people like you.
The first Kurosawa film I saw was Rashomon and it’s one of the few films I can consider perfect. For me, a perfect film stays with you after you see it but sneaks up on you so that it seems underwhelming at the end but then you can’t stop thinking about it later. I’ve got to see it again because I’m not quite sure why it messed with my head but it definitely did. Absolutely beautiful.
I know I’m a bit late to comment, but this channel really does connect with me, a lot of questions or feelings that I have, I struggled to find any source that I could connect with but this channel is my favourite thing on RU-vid. You really should be proud of your work, and I’ll continue to support it.
Wonderful, compasionate and integral essay about the greatest Filmmaker of all time probably! your Essays have evolved to become pieces of art, inspiring me to never let the guard down! Thank you!
Just amazing! The right questions and the right exposure on this cinematic genius. Bravo! This video should be part of school curriculums... this is easily one of the best if not the best channel about cinema. I'm a fan, hats off!
Such an interesting deep-dive on Kurosawa's catalogue. I love how much care you put into this, it really hit me in the feels. I feel quite ignorant now, I've only seen seven samurai and loved it. Now I'm gonna go through his whole filmography. Thanks. Keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome!
Man. You keep the work Kurosawa made alive. Thank you for the great content on every video. You are amazing. I'll try MUBI just Because of you. Thank you. Thank You. Thank You.
I am amazed how under watched this channel is. Thank you for your work.

As someone who made festivals of Akira Kurosawa in Russia since the 00s, for whom Kurosawa is the greatests and the most favourite director ever, which goes even before Lang, Kubrick and Tarkovskiy, who reviewed every of his films in detail and wrote a book about him, I want to make a comment to support this video, author of it and channel/project, even while there are some things I don't agree with it's author on several subjects . Not to write about each and every film, I want to just state that "Ikiru" is the masterpiece of mastepieces, one of the greatest films of the greatest thousands films in cinema history, including "Intolerance", "Metropolis", "Mirror", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and some more. I'm so glad you used and made accent on some of all time favourite scenes for me from "Dersu Uzala", "Ikiru", "Bad Sleep Well" and more to underline what you explain to the audience through this narration. Not perhaps, it's truly a real tragedy, as many greatest thinkers including Aristotle described it. Conflict of individual and society. And conflict wihing self, problematics of identity, while identity created by others, not by yourself, since humans are social animals. And loner in vacuum doesn't need identity in the first place. So yes, it's a true tragedy. Akira Kurosawa was a master of tragedy and genius of the cinema, while there were no cinematography schools in Japan back then. Before he moved to USSR to study and made Dersu Uzala... Okay, I'll end here or I can go on for pages and many pages. Rather perish than face the mirror. Exactly. That's it. Excellent writing, video and editing. Go on the same spirit. Best wishes.
Don't get me started on Kurosawa... I'll be typing till tomorrow! One of the great artists and storytellers ever. Like all my favorites (Kubrick, Fellini, Bergman, Welles), he has great films from every period of his career. Thank you for focusing on a few of the lesser known but no-less important works of Kurosawa's as well!
Man, I really hope You live out Your Personal Meaning in these videos. They are a pleasure to look at, and I deeply treasure the time I spent watching them. Articulating the thoughts of great thinkers of our civilization in a way that even I can understand it... It's a great act:) Wish you the best.
Your videos are like movies for me in a way... always make me think about the world and how we are living our lifes. I love them so much, please continue with your great work!
You made a very inspirational film all of your own. This was an excellent opportunity to not only highlight the career of a legendary filmmaker but also to reinforce the powerful philosophy to be found by the study of his work. His legacy. Thank you for being such a good interpreter of that legacy. I know that I am not the only person who has viewed this short documentary and been moved, inspired, and changed by seeing Kurosawa's art through your unique understanding of that art he left behind. You in turn are leaving now your own individual voice! It's strange isn't it? One person's life affects so many other lives. I'm grateful to you and to Mr. Kurosawa. Sensei.
Second video into your channel and I feel hope for humanity . We need to see more of this way of thinking if we are to continue forward into our future
The thing that nier automata taught me is that my humanity is not so fragile as to crumble when my 'good faith' is challenged or broken, we are more than that, glory to mankind
