i'm 16 and got diagnosed with autism two years ago. for 14 years, i was constantly reminded that i was different and that people didnt understand me. i grew to hate my differences and suffered with internalized ableism(that i'm still working on). when i got my diagnosis, it was actually very sudden and i didnt believe it at all- "that can't be me" "autistic kids are weird and don't talk" but when i got home and i began to read more about it, i broke down. i related to it so perfectly and i hated myself for it and was so relieved to finally be able to start figuring myself out. this clip means a lot to me :] thank you.

I have a lot of autistic traits but I went to a neuro psych person and he basically said nothing so either all my symptoms are a part of GAD or something is going unnoticed :( I don’t like the think about these things too much bc it stresses me out that I don’t have an answer :(

This was exactly me! I’m 16 and got diagnosed a couple of months back. The moment of realisation, when you finally have words to explain how you think and feel and why certain things have been so hard for so long, is the most intense feeling in the world. I was so emotional and when I was finally able to get my diagnosis after 3 years of waiting and fighting and meetings that were so difficult, it feels so good to finally be able to know I’m not a weirdo, and I’m not alone. ❤️

Me who is a teenage female with adhd and autism i completely agree but to add on to what aimsey said is that both are a spectrum and also contradict each other so you can have both and only have 1 or 2 traits of both or they mesh together like some of mine do but not everyone has the same symptoms of it. Only reason i got diagnosed really is because my younger brothers are adhd and ones autistic and if it weren't for mum knowing the symptoms from them i wouldn't have been diagnosed at like 11 or 12

aah this makes me so happy! i'm so glad that people are starting to realize things like this, and like i have both adhd and autism on top of others as well, and it took a lot of convincing doctors from my parents to get diagnosed, its so unnecessarily difficult to get it when it should be easier. also you should always be yourself and just because there may not be others like you around doesn't mean they aren't there. you all are loved and appreciated and you should never be afraid to be yourself.

I’m a trans man who definitely has ADHD but growing up presenting as a female, I never got diagnosed and was just instantly labeled as a “gifted child” like so many AFAB people with ADHD are and now that I’m almost an adult and doing shit in school cause I never had help, I’m finally trying to unlearn masking and seek a proper diagnosis so that I can get help with the things I struggle with.

I'm an AFAB person about to start their autism assessment, and honestly hearing them talk about it means a lot. I learned to mask my symptoms quite well, but when I was younger I used to get bullied pretty badly for my mannerisms, and my struggles with understanding tone and intent made it easy for other kids to pull pretty nasty pranks on me and take advantage of my "naivety". The struggles of neurodivergent people (especially AFAB individuals) really get swept under the rug and go unnoticed for years. Hearing Aimsey and Ranboo talk about those issues makes me really happy. It's so reassuring to hear that who I am is okay, even if it strays from what is considered "normal"
@bynnyn
@bynnyn 2 года назад
I feel you.. Unlike most AFAB people, I was diagnosed early in life because my mom recognized the symptoms very early. I was often made fun of by my classmates or treated differently by teachers because of my autism. Example: I had a strange fascination with superheroes when I was younger, a hyperfixation if you will, and it caused me to do things or act out things a superhero would do. I found a giant piece of concrete, and thought it'd make me a great hero if I was strong enough to pick it up and throw it a few feet(I was like five at the time and incredibly small). I picked up the big rock above my head, and I threw it as far as I could. It hit one of my classmates on the back of the head, knocking him down, and I didn't get in as much trouble as someone else would've gotten. I had to sit down in time out for five minutes, while other kids would've had to sit of ten minutes or longer if they would've don it. This wasn't the first time my teacher had done this, when it was nap-time, she'd allow me to play or read under my blanket as long as I was being quiet, while the other kids had to lay there and sleep--none of them were allowed to play during nap-time. This kid I was in class with tried to trick me into being a rebound for him incase his girlfriend broke up with him, because I was "naive" and he thought he could trick me. I'm pretty sure I hit him though, and told his girlfriend at the time. And yes, this was kindergarten and they were dating. =>=

I really liked what ranboo said, because I like the dsmp, and I like certain things that I shouldn't be ashamed of. Just a reminder that self-diagnosis is OK!! As long as you actually do research and relate to the symptoms, not only the "funny" or "quirky" ones. I'm 20, got diagnosed last month with ADHD and autism (or aspergers, but its not a medical term anymore I believe). It happened only because I realized that there is a connection between my problems and problems of ADHD/autistic people. Looking back it makes so much sense, but only for people who know about the symptoms that girls/women have (which lets be honest, not many do). I was so happy to finally know that I wasnt being "lazy" all my life, my struggles have a justification. Sadly, there are people who dont really care about this. Not hating on my parents but they dont see that as a "good reason" to function like I do. Just know that if you think that there is a good way for you to function, sometimes despite what the "grown ups" say, it might just be the best way. Also, even if you're not diagnosed, you can use the "ADHD/ASD hacks" that you see on the internet! No one can gatekeep these :). Do what you feel will help you! Remember to take care of yourself :)
@MeowKiii-

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS!! i always felt so wrong “self diagnosing” myself with adhd. i don’t tell anyone expect mention it on the internet and whenever i do try to mention it to my family they think i’m overreacting and attention seeking. ive taken so many autism and adhd tests and most of the adhd ones come up as positive, but i hope i do get a professional diagnosis soon (if i really do have it)
@babycakelings
@babycakelings 2 года назад
Self-diagnosing is very very valid. Just if you are do be careful to not speak over those who are diagnosed or spread any misinfomation. Use self-diagnosing to help yourself (and others who also can't get diagnosed) fuction and feel happy with yourself. Don't use it as an excuse and don't let other people use it as an excuse to be a dick or spread misinfomation (if that makes sense). It's unfortunatly common to find (not to do, but to see) young self diagnosed people saying "I'm neruodivergent so therfore how I'm acting is ok," (agian, common to see, not to be.) so be careful not to be one of them.
@hi.587

thank you for saying this!! i'm pretty young and i'm like 90 percent sure i have adhd (maybe asd as well, but i'm still researching that) but i can't just go out and get diagnosed. i still live with parents and i'm a girl so it's much more difficult for me to bring it up or ask to get diagnosed. i do want to ask to get diagnosed at some point, but i'm just not ready right now, and that's completely fine! we all need to go at our own pace in figuring ourselves out
@babycakelings
@babycakelings 2 года назад
Oh also, just reread this and wanted to add something. Please avoid using the term Aspergers. The reason it’s no longer a thing is because it was a nazi term to sort “useful” and “useless” autistic people (aka, those that were killed and those that weren’t). Obviously there’s a huge issue in using that, especially since some autistics are good in some areas and bad to the point of being disabled at others, so it’s very problematic to say wether or not their a good autistic based on how useful or independent they are. It’s the same reason we don’t use fuctioning labels anymore, because it’s limiting and degrading. Especially in children it’s labeling their abilities and how much they should be respected. Children with autism tend to fend better if you just let them do what they can and get help with what they can’t, rather then saying basically “oh he’s a dumb autistic” and treating them like an Infant. (Not mad or anything, just trying to educate here)

I felt I’ll enough I was on the verge of meltdown, got told they had called home, (they lied about that) and got told I couldn’t go home so I had to completely mask, and stop an entire meltdown. It’s not healthy or ok that our schools force us into this situation. I got home today and my tics have been worse and everything, just because the school did nothing. It’s a real issue that should be talked about more.

wow. this is awesome to see. i just found out that my parents knew about my neurodiversity from when i was about a year old, and never told me. i just found out that i had an iep in elementary school, as well as the fact that you need a diagnosis to get one(though they still refuse to tell me what that diagnosis is). i've been masking for years, and i've felt so alone for the past few years because i've been struggling alone and had a lot of internalized ableism. my parent has told me that there's 'no way' i'm autistic, but i've done my research and don't understand how they can't see that autism is a spectrum and just because i'm good at masking and don't stim in front of people and make eye contact doesn't mean i'm not. it makes me really happy to see aimsey talk about this, i actually had no idea they were neurodivergent before, and it makes me feel so much less alone to see role models and people who put themselves out there who are like me! ranboo and aimsey's words are super comforting and i really with i could give the two of them hugs because i really appreciate what they're saying.

It makes me really happy to hear all of this come to attention, as i don't wish anyone else to go through what i did to get my diagnosis. I wish i had gotten diagnosed earlier because it would have solved so many problems before things got bad. But because someone said i wasnt autistic in third grade i had to live in ignorance about the underlying cause of my issues for so many years.

This is nice to see, a few months ago I was suspecting that I had signs of ADHD in myself, I had asked my mom after a fight if I had anything similar and she said yes and had been diagnosed with ADHD as a kid I never knew until this year, and she still doesn't understand how that could affect me and how it has affected my abilities in school for years what's worse is that I recently got diagnosed with PTSD as well

The best way in my eyes for those with autism to feel more comfortable and proud of it is realize that there are positives that can come from autism, like possibly, more honest and punctual personality, better understanding of math, ability to recognize patterns and small details, creativity, less judgemental view of the actual world around you, better long-term memory, ability to do repetitive tasks easier, and they tend to be reliable and loyal employees, for that reason and some of the other things i said, has caused companies like microsoft to actively search for individuals with autism. But also the fact that those with autism are in the same list as people like Albert Einstein, Mozart, Satoshi Tajiri, Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Bill Gates, and even more; is something that im personally kinda proud of.

Seeing more people talk about this truly makes things so much easier to deal with. I also possibly have ADHD, but I’m not on a waiting list for that, it’d be too much to balance atm. But, wow, I feel accepted after this.

I got diagnosed with ADHD and Anxiety when I was young. I didn’t get diagnosed with autism till I was maybe 13. I’ve been super lucky to have a family that supported and understood me before and after any diagnosis (especially since the school system didn’t support me correctly). Almost every single person in my family is some form of neurodivergent. The concept of normal doesn’t exist, there isn’t even a normal within each type of neurodivergence. Every single person is unique in so many ways and I sincerely hope that everyone gets the supports they need at every stage of their life

I'm replying a bit late and maybe people have said this but I feel so comfortable listening to these two talk because they are so accepting of themselves and others. They understand what it's like to go through all sorts of things which I think is what make people enjoy tuning into their streams. Many people find connections with these two and find comfort which makes me tear up with pride and fill me up with warmth. I wish more people could understand the way this community does and it shouldn't have to take experience to force that upon someone it should just come naturally to care for your follow human beings. I agree that there is no such thing as normal and it shouldn't even be a topic. Imagine a world where you weren't judged and idk autism wasn't a term you could just be that and people would just see you as who you are. I'm sorry for the rant but I have always wanted to share my opinion and never been able to truly word it. In fact I haven't worded it as I wanted to but no words come to mind. Just feelings.

It's always just 'treat with medication'. I actually recently (don't worry done safely with psychiatrist) started going off al my meds. It's going well so far. Anyways, I found a centre and coincidentally this week I'm actually going to get a diagnosis from a place that specialises in stuff like this. I don't want a diagnosis for the label, I just am not coping at all in life and no one has been able to do/give me helpful advice so far. I really hope these people will just be able to help.

My mum and me think I have dyscacula (sorry I probably spelt that wrong) I always got denied tests for the problem at school and just got told I will get better at it when I am older which made me think there is something wrong with me. Now I am old enough I am going to get myself assessed by a professional. All I am saying is some times it’s nice having a label e.g Autism, ADHD so you know that nothing is wrong with you. Thanks for reading ❤

But they just simply went yeah you have attention issues because I wasn't "hyper" but I really was tho through covid and have ADHD for years I just calmed down. Now if I look back it's funny no one noticed when I would stim or talk super fast, why I had problems making friends, and why I never stayed on one activity for long. It's why I couldn't do well in school for so long but I forced myself to be able to be okay so now it's a challenge to adjust to the new normals for the past few years for me

Unfortunately my state is pretty bad at healthcare for people with ADHD and autism ect (my teacher even had to move away because it just wasn’t helping her son who has autism) I get a pill I just forget to take because of my ADHD ( I get distracted and then it just leaves my mind) and dealing with that on top of my other mental disorder is really hard when I have to go to a public school that doesn’t care much for the students with ADHD, autism ect. This really needs to be discussed more and I’m so happy it came from people I greatly respect

i work in a medical centre, its a massive point the doctors are all aware of that women and particularly young girls are extremely under diagnosed as neurodivergent, especially ADHD. An additional needs school I knew in 2009ish (for children with moderate to severe autism) had 100 students, 7 of which were girls, all the rest boys. That ratio has changed dramatically with children being diagnosed way more often in general, giving them the support needed. Female and trans masc friends of mine have expressed just how dramatically not being seen affected them, having now been diagnosed late teens early 20's.

To be honest, Aimsey talking about being called weird being a compliment really reminds me of when people call me an idiot, and I just say, “And I’m proud of it!” It doesn’t matter who or what you are, for example I have autism and ADD, and I don’t control it. Sure, growing up with autism was rough, especially since I only found out that I have it at NINE YEARS OLD! That’s nine years of my life where I did not know the truth. I did not know why I was taking special forms of therapy. Turns out, surprise, surprise, autism just knocked on my door. I honestly am actually really proud, however, that I do have autism. I don’t wanna be boring and blend in. I wanna stand out, be the funny guy who always lightens the mood. I don’t give a care in the world if people even call me the R-slur, I’ll just flip them off and go on my merry way. Being a fifteen year old boy with autism is not easy, but hey, it’s not as hard as it looks. I’m just lucky that the autism I have is autism spectrum disorder. I was lucky to have the people in my life I did while growing up. I was lucky to have the life I do. The thing is, there is nothing wrong with autism. Why try to get rid of it when you can just adapt to living with it? I’ve been doing so for almost sixteen years now. I wasn’t even able to talk until I was five and a half years old. There is nothing wrong with autism, if people do have autism they just need the right people in their lives as I did, and I cannot be more grateful. All these years I have had people who care about me and love me, and so does everyone on this planet. Everyone has that one person they can just always go to. That is a lot of people in my life, and I’m glad.

As some one with Autism and add (attention deficit disorder) it’s interesting to see other people talking about how you don’t have to mask your symptoms because that can lead you down a rabbit hole of unhappiness with who you are. I haven’t gotten diagnosed with autism but I’ve been able to mask not looking people in the eyes. That’s probably why Im not diagnosed. It sucks honestly. I hate the fact that the study of autism was based off of the male brain. Which makes autistic women harder to get diagnosed.
