Yeah, we've read the articles and seen the videos, but we still think this one is worth watching. Renowned Florida-based bass pro Randall Tharp is widely considered one of the best shallow-water anglers in the country. Tharp dishes out the details on his nuts and bolts setup for punching bass living underneath matted vegetation, with slight tweaks to this setup legit anywhere gardens grow lush.
TACKLE USED
• ROD - ARK Randall Tharp Honey Badger "Okeechobee Special", 7'11" X-Hvy Casting Rod: wired2.fish/Ho...
• REEL - ARK Casting Reel (NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR SALE)
• LINE - Sufix 131 G-Core Braid, 65-pound: wired2.fish/Su...
• WEIGHT - ARK Fishing No Chip Tungsten Insert Flipping Weights: wired2.fish/No...
• HOOK - VMC Ike Approved Heavy Duty Flipping Hook, 4/0: wired2.fish/VM...
• BAIT - Low profile creature bait
• PEG - VMC Sinker Stops: wired2.fish/VM...
Tharp starts by discussing his go-to rod and reel setup for getting high-percentage hookups with heavy braid and also advises on adjusting your rod power based on hookset strength. He explains why he forgoes ultra-fast reels instead, preferring "mid-range" high-speed reels in the 7.1:1 range, spooled with a smooth 65-pound braid.
Next up is tackle selection, ranging from a plastic, heavy tungsten flipping weights, and a 4/0 HD flipping hook, all kept in place by a single peg (not 2, he explains why). Of particular interest is how Tharp ties his snell knot. The "perfect Randall Tharp snell knot" has a few unique attributes that make tying easy while adding strength. He walks us through the full knot tying setup, followed by finalizing the rig with a plastic and peg.
Despite the simple assortment of tackle, the devil is in the details on how it's all assembled. We hope you find a takeaway or two to elevate your heavy cover punching game.

Great information from Wired2Fish as always! When Randall talks Punching I'm all ears! I like the small little tweaks he mentions (not butting the stopper all the way against the weight, poking hook through, not doubling up stoppers etc!) Dude, I'm ready to fly out of this office and crack some fish!

Appreciate it Paul. We feel the same, get after it and hopefully you'll find a few of Randall's nuggets useful👌.

I had the old Quantum Flipping/Pitching reel with the flipping switch back in '87. 4.4:1 gear ratio. That thing put many a 7lb bass in my boat.

Always thread 2 pegs onto your line as one will eventually burn off no matter what. The snell knot / punching hook is almost always the go to but sometimes i punch a 4/0 ewg and it works just fine. You said "every peice to this puzzle is important" I totally agree. Confidence in your setup is the #1 ingredient to a good day punching

I also use a ewg hook! To me the bait sits better and straighter than a flipping hook

Went by Wired2Fish the other day when visiting family in Grand Rapids ! I didn’t realize you were from there. We were on our way down to Sugar Lake near Vermillion Lake by Remer. Caught some dandy panfish down there.

Very cool Glenn, would've hooked you up with a hat and shirt so swing in next time! Glad the area was productive for you. Got any other lakes for us ; ). We also have staff in Georgia (Walker), Kentucky (Jason), and Illinois (uncle Terry).

Man I am glad you talked about Snelling "the best way" you can also get that same effect by doing it the popular way but you have wrap from the top down and it's more tedious. Another good way is like ISH does it, I think its basically the same way. Just a different method.

Personally i use 2 bobber stoppers because i want the weight to not slide as much because with that weight swinging around and sliding up and down the line with the fish on, i tend to lose a lot of the fish using 1. Because the weight tends to pop the hook out sliding up and down the line

Love my Ark rods. Why does he feel like his bite to land ratio goes down with a 2 oz. weight? Does he think it blows their mouth open more being a larger diameter or the leverage they get when they shake their head?
@haleybarnes2794
@haleybarnes2794 3 года назад
He said that is was because having a heavier weight that doesn't slide up the line gives the fish more leverage to throw the hook out of their mouth. When you have a large/heavy bait the head shaking that a bass does makes it easier for your hook to pop out, therefore loosing the fish, which lowers your bite:landing ratio.

Honest question here, is this considered a pegged Texas rig or a Florida Rig?

How shallow of matted hydrilla does punching work I wonder? I've been punching it all my life out in 8-18, but the lakes this summer around me aren't growing it deeper than around 4 feet, and the matted stuff isn't really until 2-3, in clumps. Wonder if punching it would work

If there's room for them to swim underneath, then there's always a chance of bass using it. Definitely worth a try.

Your 7'10MH can you flip/pitch in lighter grass mats with it somewhere around 3/4 Oz? Or is it a cranking Rod?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 2 года назад
Direct from Randy. The 7'10'' MH is a composite cranking rod so not well suited for flip/pitch applications. The 7’11” Guntersville Special and Okeechobee Special are my braided line flipping sticks. The 7’6” King Cobra is a more versatile all around flipping stick. There is detailed descriptions and videos of each model on the Ark website."
