The Aerospace Textile Industry doesn't get nearly enough credit for all the work it does to improve the safety of modern ACVs (aerial carpet vehicles).

Flying carpet gives a creature flying, boring. Al-Abara's carpet gives YOU flying. That's cool.

Design team in Arabian Nights: See? Even the drawback is very flavourful. Design team in 7th Edition: Drawback too complex, this sucker is getting a buff.
@megapussi

I feel like the better flavour design would be "if flying caret is destroyed before end of turn, so is that creature" cuz yknow, the dude falls down

don't you see? the real flying was inside you all along

What's kind of funny is that Arabian Nights had a card named Sandals of Abdallah which was the same thing except it granted islandwalk instead of flying. But since it was never reprinted they never got rid of the clause about destroying the artifact along with the creature, and it's still there in the oracle text today.

Listen, if your carpet gets dirty, you can dust it off and hop back on. If your SHOES get soaking WET from crossing an island chain? You do NOT want to wear those for any extended period of time.

@@zylowolfzan3345 The shoes got wet, now they're COMPLETELY USELESS!

Maybe it’s not so much that the shoes got wet as that now they’re at the bottom of the ocean.

Runesword, Kjeldoran Guard, Acidic Dagger, this was the standard on psudo equipment at the time, and a similar thing with psudo vehicle cards like War Barge, Vodalian War Machine, Phantasmal Mount

Most of the 1001 Nights stories set in China are for all intents and purposes set in the Near East, since the theming is all from the region they were written in and not their nominal setting
@cataleptickraken3197
@cataleptickraken3197 5 дней назад
that's the same for many stories and myths set in a place and time different than the one they were popular in

With flying carpets, you actually _can_ make the whole thing out of the same material as the black box. And you can still make beautiful patterns with it!

Ever since I was a child, I've wanted to live in the westernized fantasy version of Arabia a la Aladdin. I want to wear an all silk outfit with feathers and jewels everyday. I want a green turban with a big ruby in the middle and a parrot companion that sits on top my head. What I wouldn't give for a flying carpet

Hahhahahaha this card is very fun and it's great to see how it got better after the safety concerns, "Wheeeeeeee!" xD

0:30 does it even count as a carpet at that point?
@nathanl8622

That's my thought. I don't think you can call it a carpet when you can fit a small city on it.

Remember kids: when you fly on flying carpet, always remember to fasten your seatbelt
@MultiYoshiman

thats really weird, why did they effectively "buff" the card?
@whosilence
@whosilence 6 дней назад
Because it gets less confusing. Notice it was reprinted in core sets, which were designed as introductory sets...
@BloodyAltima

Because at the time there were more inconsistent about the "no functional errata" rule they (with the exception of rare and specific creature type updates) live by these days.

That 7th Edition flavour text omfg How did that ever get printed? The hell is a "mono" artifact?
@jonothanthrace1530
@jonothanthrace1530 6 дней назад
That 7th edition EVERYTHING. That art is awful in that very specific 2001 way.
@syrelian
@syrelian 6 дней назад
Old ass MtG terminology, iirc "Mono" on an Artifact meant that its activated ability implicitly taps the Artifact(note how all the reprints add a Tap cost to it)
@christopherlundgren1700
@christopherlundgren1700 5 дней назад
Very early Magic technology split artifacts into 3 subtypes: Mono artifacts could be activated once per turn, Poly artifacts could be activated any number of times, and Continuous artifacts provided effects at all times (unless they were tapped, which would turn them off). After a few sets they replaced “mono” with tapping, and the other two types were kind of useless. Turning off continuous effects of artifacts by tapping them would last for several more years.

I thought Arabian Nights taking place in China, just meant "a very far away land" not that it actually takes place in China.

I figure flying carpets are a trope in 1001 Nights-themed settings cuz of some Western adaptation from the 1910s or whatever. (or to be more precise every gets it from the Disney movie, but I assume that's where they got it from)
@jonothanthrace1530
@jonothanthrace1530 6 дней назад
Given how pervasive flying carpets were in Western animation for decades before Disney Aladdin, I'm not sure that generated much of a bump in their popularity.
