No 1. Question: Can you do this for me? Short: No. Long: Due to having a day job and a family I have a very tight budget on spare time and I have to heavily priorities what I do with it. So to make printing keycaps worth it they would have to be way to expansive. That is why I did this video, I can't print them for your but I can show you how it can be done and maybe someone wants to offer this service, but it's not me, sorry. No 2. Question: can you use Powder Coating powder? A: Yes absolutely. That should work even better. But I did not test it.

What about powder coat. Powdercoat is kind of like heat activated epoxy or heat activated 2 part paint. Unlike normal 2 part systems,where you mix the two parts and they react at room temperature, in a powdercoat, they come already mixed. When you heat the powdercoat the powder melts, then the chemicals react making a polymer.

I use white dry rub-on transfer letters on black keycaps. The problem is that that the rub-on transfers will wear off almost immediately. I mitigate against this by spaying the keycaps with satin finish automotive catalyzed clear-coat (not air dry clear). It's not a perfect solution but it last quite a long time.

Yanno, I cannot help but wonder: 1. If you couldn't cross-blend the images for clarity, or 2. If you're not inadvertently introducing the defects by your process itself. Like, say you were to follow your process exactly as shown, then repeat it on the same keycap (whole process, re-dip in pigment and all), but rotated 90 degrees. I suggest this because the 90º rotation will orient your laser lines perpendicular to the first pass, so the "scanline" aliasing jags would be smoothed out a bit, and the minute amount of bleed you'd see at the edges might be enough to add an anti-aliasing/feathering effect. Likewise, DPI be damned, you're saving the image as a raster image. You'll need to go quite a bit higher before pixel demarcation isn't visible to the human eye. Though, can the software really not support a vector image? EPS? PDF? AI? SVG? Depending on the resolution of the laser and the CNC, it's possible you're INTRODUCING the jags with your selection of file format.
@MakenModify
@MakenModify 3 года назад
Yea you can also just change the direction of the lines, instead of physically rotating the cap. The software I used back then just worked with raster images and higher resolution images did not translate to better prints, also due to software limitations. After the video i tried laserweb and that supports vector images and is overall a better software

Take a look at keycapdiy.blogspot.com/ At the above URL, you can see his experiments starting in Dec 2013 and continuing. And I would have to agree with the blogger that dye sub with ABS keycaps is impossible since if you do some research, you'll find that the dye sub process takes a temperature of about 400°F (204°C) and ABS plastic has a melting point of 105°C. PBT has a melting point of about 433°F (223°C) so PBT keycaps can be done with careful temperature control. I don't know if the gentleman associated with the above URL is still working since the last blog post was in May of 2016, but there should be useful information there if you intend on doing DIY dye sublimation of keycaps. I've been looking for a relatively inexpensive way of making some custom keycaps myself since I'd like to make a custom keyboard myself. (See www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/d6314df3ad657cc9a0342bd396d56730 ) Unlike most of the DIY keyboards out there that reduce the number of keys, my plan is to go larger. I figure the Jumbo layout with a 24x7 Matrix would map quite nicely. But getting nice looking keycaps for the extra 34 keys above a 108 key layout presents a problem... (yes, the layout I'd like has 142 keys).

I was wondering how it would look if you first laser engraved the art & then dip the keycap in the toner and hit the keycap with the laser again. It should give the keycap an interesting tactile feeling to the keycap and also trap the toner slightly below the top of the keycap.
@MakenModify

Might work but it might be hard to perfectly align it twice. What i also did was deep engrave something and then add enamel paint, wipe off the rest. After drying ther is a haptical feedback.

@@MakenModifyEnamel, that is what I was thinking about. I'm 60 and I barely remember in Junior High School Plastic Industry class where we engraved plastic using a router and then spread some sort of paint over the engraved area and the wiped off the paint on the surrounding area and then let the paint dry. It was a long time ago (mid 70s) so couldn't remember the terms to use. I figured I would just have to make a holder with an opening with the same width as the keys are wide and then just make thin template that would center each of the different lengths of keys. I figured if someone had a laser engraver, that they would also have access to or own a 3D printer.

@MakenModify

I have a vinyl cutter but that would losen after no time. You could use it as a stancil for spray paint though. Some people use water slide decals that you can print. But thats also not very resilient. Best bet is to get an ink jet printer, swap the ink for sublimation ink and iron it on (works for pbt caps). This was mor an experiment that worked surprisingly well 😉

I had a similar idea of using nail polish pigments. I ordered some but never got around to use it. what I did try was using different text markers and removing the excess ink with cleaning alcohol. that kind of worked. I think your milling failed because the ABS got too hot and melted. cooling it with alcohol might help. as a wild guess I would say you could try freezing the caps beforehand but they may become brittle and just break apart.

This is a very cool process. Thank you for the video and sharing it in full. I was also wondering about using UV cure resin and an MSLA 3d printer (like an Anycubic Photon X or Elegoo) to expose the resin and bind it to a keycap thereby "printing" an image onto a keycap. Then washing off the uncured resin before completing the curing of the adhered image under a UV light. My though is that this process would even allow for "printing" multi-color images and even with multiple exposures making them tactile (even printing braille key caps). The key will probably getting the right resin that would adhere well enough to the plastic of the key-caps. Thoughts?
@MakenModify
@MakenModify 2 года назад
nice, yea I have no idea how good adhesion would be but I once added a dab of epoxy to two Keycaps to get a homing bump and that stuck just fine for years. More of a problem could be that that the surface of standard keycaps is not flat and on say Cherry profile they aren't even parallel to the bottom. But I've seen done was completely MSLA printed caps (with legends).

Likely not. Maybe a bit ;) The idea is that both, powder and keycap melt and fuse together. Resin dose not melt. The powder might melt and fuse a bit to the Resin but I guess the connection would not be very strong.

I am actually in the process of starting up a custom keyboard business. This is pure genius, but I am wondering exactly how well have these held up? I read up on your thread at geekhack, but it hasn't really been updated as of recent. I did notice you said they wore out pretty badly after around 6ish months I believe, but I am wondering if you took any steps prior to prevent that? As in, did you apply some clearcoat and sealant to the keys themselves, or did you just leave them after that?
@MakenModify
@MakenModify 4 года назад
I left them as is without any protection, to see how it will hold up. for a business it's maybe a better idea to use a DIY dye sub method like the one shown on Linus Tech Tips. It just needs an inkjet printer, special ink and paper as well as an flat iron or something similar. Dye sublimation is a proven to work process that works with dark colors on light colored keycaps. My process is more of an experiment ;)

@@MakenModify I understand your reasoning for saying that, but I've been doing A LOT of research on this exact topic. We have a special way of customizing our keycaps already that makes it where doing that won't be possible, as it will mess up the current pattern we do on it.
