One thing that might make a difference to some people: Security features. For example, a random year Maple is not necessarily going to have the radial lines and/or the micro-engraved date. Bullion is bullion, but only if you know for certain that it is bullion. Security features do make that much easier.

I think we quickly forget that “bullion is bullion”. At least when buying from my LCS, they say the date and condition is not that big of a deal. I was able to get a 1980 Maple at good price this week and actually it is pretty cool since it has the young queen on it.

I picked up a few random year gold Buffalos from Silver Gold Bull in the past and they arrived in great condition, so I agree that random year for certain coins can be a great choice. Personally I always buy current year at the time BU coins. My current budget allows generally for a few coins a year. I like being able to look back at my collection and know what and how much I bought in any given year. I think it will be interesting to look back in 30 years and see what I was able to afford over the years and as I age. It does pain me a little knowing I am paying a premium for current year on top of the already high premiums but it just does something good for my psychology.

@@letsbuildasnowman7058 I started out as a collector, a friend got me interested in old numismatics (he had some cool large cents and half dimes) and then I bought a Franklin Mint "Treasure coins of the Caribbean" series (what a mistake! $27. a coin when spot was around $13.). But I slid into stacking in the mid 90's and have never looked back. I also have AGEs, all but the last three I bought. But I am looking at the CMI gold page and the Britannias are $1818. and Eagles are $1892. Perth bars are $1792. I usually just buy their minimum of three ounces so I have to ask myself if I want to pay $220. to $300. more for a US mint product.

I hear a lot about “gold is gold” but is hard for me to not care for my coins. Some people call OCD, but to me is pride in taking care of my stuff ( clean house, car, work area, etc). Once I bought a 10g gold bar and noticed that the bar got some dings probably caused by the assay card. I could not see that and removed the bar. After a few days I decided to sell it and sure enough that BS about it had some scratches and was worth less. I now only buy BU coins and look for the newest year and keep all my coins in capsules.

You pretty much answered your own question. Buffalos, Krugerrands, Eagles okay for random year. The rest be picky if they are mirror finishes like Maples and Britannia; they will be noticed. Fractional and older coins like Roosters, Sovereigns get a fair pass for quality control. Proof coins I'd only get if they are equal price to BU or less, face it, its a collectible.

Wow. I agree with this message. Especially the Jekyl and Hyde part. 🙂I will also buy random coins/random date if the price is right and I’m in the mood for a surprise. I was disappointed only once when I got three beat up 1/4 oz gold coins in assay from a less popular mint. Yep, dings in assay. I hung on to them for a while, but every time I pulled them out I felt gypped, so I finally swapped them for 2 Krugs and a panda at my LCS, which also refines gold. No extra cost to me. The mint was more disappointing to me than the dings, as jewelers in my area will buy dinged up gold at spot.

Cool thoughts. Got some scratched up coins from a precious metals bank. Weight and dimensions checked out right and for 2% over spot, no complaints. Scratches and dings become the identity of the coins. They become like a herd of sheep. You know which is which, you know they're yours, and nobody can fake it ding for ding should someone try to pull a fast one on you. Now, anytime the premiums are 5% over spot, I get picky and want to be the one to ding the coin myself.

The points raised in the video are understood, credible and very much respected. However, some stackers/collectors may purchase gold coins "primarily" for their artistic perfection and beauty. The fact that such coins represent a true storage of wealth and perhaps a hedge against inflation is of only strong "secondary" importance. Of course, nothing in this man-made part of "things" is absolutely perfect (in fact, slight imperfections are often referred to as having acceptable "character"). But, the degree of artistic perfection and beauty to which I refer is that which is perceivable to the "unaided" eye. These stackers/collectors are willing to pay so-called "usual" premiums over Spot (not what has been going on these days) for purposes of buying such seemingly blemish free coins. A lot of money is being paid - and quality on-line dealers have reasonable "return policies" regarding BU blemished gold coins (especially in regard to its long-time, loyal customers). The overall idea is to buy what YOU like and enjoy. Set your own standards - and to thine own self - be true! [Plagiarism admitted.] As an "aside," it is to be noted that Buffalo coins have no mirrored surfaces. Accordingly, one has a decent chance of receiving "seemingly scratch-free coins" of this type of gold presentations. On the other hand, as concerns the beautifully, mirrored Maple Leafs . . . expectations might require some adjustment.

I bought a monster of silver Maples because of the anti fraud features. I inspected a few tubes, they are all pristine. That was a few years ago when most of my purchases were kilo and 100 ounce bars. The gold Eagles I bought in the '90s came in tubes and are also mint state. But I mostly don't care about condition. Yes, I am happy that the Kangaroo I bought recently is unscratched and it would be nice if the two Maples that came in the same order were newer, but the point is I only paid $39.00 over spot for the three. The only time I cared about condition was a 10 ounce silver bar I bought from Apmex for $199.00 when generics were going for $25. less from other dealers. I had coveted that bar for a while. It is a "Jesus clears the Temple" from the Chris Duane collection. I don't think I will ever sell it. I also have a couple of early 1800s bust halves in better that "good" condition that have sentimental value, but the rest is all just valued by weight. The fact that I have never bought a capsule for anything should tell you my stacking attitude.

I've seen some folks on RU-vid freak out about tiny nicks on their bullion coins, which I have never really understood. If you're showcasing a coin I guess it matters more. I'll always buy random year if I can save a little cash. The only thing I'll specifically buy when I have the option is an AGE with Roman numerals for the date, I just happen to like those.

I usually buy random from SD because, for me, gold is gold and silver is silver. I buy for a hedge of protection if things get bad. Things are not bad ,as they can be, yet. When they are I only care about intrinsic value not numismatic value. Most dealers will only give you spot anyway. There are exceptions. The worse it is the less the exceptions. The dealers around my area want to make as much profit as possible. They sell high and buy low.

I think people are a little more cautious about how their first few coins look. Then figure out it is like that first scratch on a new car. Upset but live with it. Most people don't store their coins properly in the first place. So their coins will tone and tarnish anyway. I have seen gold coins from a safe in the basement without protection. Was still worth more than they paid for them. Hey 2is1 maybe a topic on storage.....

If you read this I would like your take on the following. I was looking at some buffalos an hour ago trying to decide on a few 2022 Brilliant Uncirculated buffalos for $1913 ea versus Random Year Brilliant Uncirculated buffalos for $1888 ea, for a savings of $25 ea. Since both descriptions say “Brilliant Uncirculated” I would lean towards getting a few of the random date coins. Based on your experience, do some dealers play loose with the descriptions or is this scenario typical? Here are their words: (Spot is $1808) $1913 - 2022 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Brilliant Uncirculated .9999 Fine 24kt $1888 - 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Brilliant Uncirculated .9999 Fine 24kt (Random Year) $1886 - 1 oz American Gold Buffalo - Spotted / Scuffed .9999 Fine 24kt (Random Year)
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 года назад
I don’t buy coins marked as scuffed or “light abrasions”, but I would buy the random dates and sometimes those have slight imperfections (most of my Buffalos do). I’m only concerned about a coin being perfect if it’s a collector coin. Cheers!

Hey man, who cares what people think. If I can save a premium buying random year gold, I will. I do it all the time with 1/4 Oz eagles. I just make sure it says it’s going to come BU. Sometimes they’ve even sent me proofs 😂. Buffalos I buy random year BU, just because it’s always interesting to see what year you get. Maple leafs, are the ones I don’t usually get random years as much, as the results tend to be more dicey!
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 3 года назад
I would never buy random year CMLs because I like the radial lines, but the sites that actually grade random year coins BU are an easier choice. I don’t know if SDB ever does that. Cheers!
@uncareid5557
@uncareid5557 3 года назад
If you care about premiums why are you buying 1/4 ounce Eagles? I would think you would want to save your pennies and get old K-rands or bars. Four 1/4 ounce Eagles will cost you $188.00 more that a one ounce Eagle from SDB, and you can buy Krugerrands for $75. less at CMI, and Perth bars for $108.00 less. So you are paying almost $300. an ounce more for four forth ounce coins compared to one ounce bars. I wanted to compare apples to apples at the same dealer but Silver Docs don't have K-rands and CMI doesn't have fractionals.

And if you reread my previous post you will see I was not "telling you what to do with your money" but asking a question.

In my 20’s so a little new to gold. Question: I didn’t know the year of a coin could make such a difference like 5% is there a threshold for the age of a coin. For example a 10 year old should be a certain percent cheaper or gold is gold no matter the year?
@glenh4971
@glenh4971 3 года назад
There are other youtubers that talk about gold that say they want only perfect gold coins. Perfect condition. For me, it depends on the premium and it depends on what is available. For example, if I could get a Gold eagle for the same price as a Kruggerand I would take the Eagle any day of the week. Its been that way before. Now, for me, Kruggerands are what is available and they are old stock but in saleable condition. You buy the best of what is available. If the best is Krugg's than that is what you buy. I won't pay 5% more for an Eagle. That's a much bigger premium in a market where the premium is already too high. You will not get the premium back when you sell. The dealer will tell you that an Eagle is not a collectors coin. Its just a 1 oz gold store of value. Nothing else. Nothing more. They made millions.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 3 года назад
Until recently, the Eagle was 1 - 2% more at my local shops. The buy to sell spread was identical to most anything else. But there were other benefits to having the Eagle. It was an easy choice. Now it’s a hard decision every time. I suppose I’m also pickier on coins I’ll be showing on the channel.
@glenh4971
@glenh4971 3 года назад
@@2is1gold That is admirable that you want perfect coins to show on the channel. However, students need to know what a coin looks like that is saleable. You don't want people to believe that a coin must be mint to be worth buying. There is going to come a time when coins in mint condition will be harder to find. Wealthy people are going to buy gold coins up in large quantity's when fear grips the nation later.

So I've read that touching gold coins lowers the value. Now, I assume that refers to the premium as opposed to spot/ melt value. Since gold doesn't corrode or tarnish with time or handling. Am I correct in this assumption that pure gold, (or close to) will still sell for the melt price of current per ounce price, despite scratches or Knicks?
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 3 года назад
Scratches could decrease the amount of premium you’d get back. You might find that scratches would even mean you’d get less than spot. It all depends on the buyer. Roughing gold coins has no affect whatsoever. Cheers!
