Jon Benn's book relates how he was having dinner with Chuck Norris and asked him who would win in a real fight, "You or Bruce?" "Why, Bruce of course. Nobody could beat him." A few days ago I read an article on Linda Lee: "Once Bruce sparred with Chuck Norris and Mike Stone at the same time, and he made them look like amateurs."

The best part of that Jim Kelly Interview was when you could actually Sense Jim Rewinding back in Time in His own head, remembering how Nasty Bruce's Skills were. For a few seconds there, Kelly almost studders while speaking when he was thinking back all them years ago during that Interview. To me, that means that it had to be an Extremely Unusually High Frequency of Skill that Jim saw Bruce use that We don't get to see very often.

My heart goes out to Mr. Jim Kelly. What a CLASS ACT. I've seen a FEW videos of him speaking about Bruce Lee. And the two words that always come to mind are "love" and "respect". Mr. Kelly saw who was before him, and his abilities. He also saw through the efforts of Mr. Lee's detractors, and spoke out against them. I wish he was still with us. We need his class in this world. I watched Chuck fight in Madison Square Garden in 1967 at Jun Rhee’s Internationals. I watched the prelims on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. I had not yet met Chuck, but he was clearly head and shoulders the best of a large field of fighters. Bruce Lee did demos at that tournament. It was there that Chuck and Bruce met. As I understand it, they were staying at the same hotel and ended up practicing in the hallway. Chuck asked Bruce why he didn’t use high kicks and Bruce said something about being left vulnerable. Chuck said if your opponent gets tired and his hands drop, why not kick him in the head. I read later that the next time Chuck met Bruce, Bruce was one of the best kickers Chuck had seen. I think they both respected one another. In 1970 (I think), I saw Chuck fight at Ed Parker’s Internationals in Long Beach, CA. After that tournament, I happened to run into Chuck in the parking lot. We spoke briefly and my impression was that he was a very respectful and humble guy. I think Bruce may have done a demo at that tournament too, but I’d have to check the program to be sure. Chuck’s group was the first outside group to be invited to my group’s Special Training in 1966. He participated and brought 2 of his first Black Belts. Many years later, I became friends with Chuck’s first Black Belt, who had joined us in 1967. He always speaks very respectfully of Chuck and is greatful for Chuck introducing him to the Martial Arts.

There is an audio interview of Chuck Norris on the net that I heard a few years ago. It was done a very short time after Bruce Lee's death. Chuck states that he could have never beaten Bruce, because his movement's were just simply too fast... and you can't hit something that you can't catch. He also said that Bruce's striking speed and power were unequaled... Period, end of story.

@Маньяк Ряховский You're wrong, Chuck is not even on Bruce's level. Between Bruce n Chuck, Bruce train a lot harder, he had more skills, had more knowledge in the art of fighting and also mentally superior as well. Just because someone doesn't compete in sport fighting doesn't mean all their hard work n training are useless. A stupid man's training might be useless but a smart man's training is never useless. By the way Chuck only did point fighting, that's not even as real as full contact sparring. Bruce was the one suggesting for everyone to do full contact sparring so it's as close to the real thing as possible. Trust me, Bruce would not have so much impact on the world if he was just another Rambo on screen. Despite him never competed, What he was doing was real and it projected out from the movie screen, not the other way around.

@@stevo62ful You're right about that. Bruce is human, he could only push his physical ability so far. However, he has pushed his mental ability to another level. My opinion, he could beat just about anybody if his physical ability could keep up pace with his mind. That was what he was trying to do, combining the two, mind n body into one. Bruce is very convincing because he really understood everything he was doing n practicing including any opponent he might face. Between two person, the one who has a deeper understanding of the art they both are practicing will be better at it. In this case, it would be Bruce, unless the opponent is just way too big n strong for him. Chuck Norris is bigger than Bruce, but he's not too big or strong for Bruce.

To add to my comments of a few seconds ago: recently read an interview with Dan Inosanto on the first time Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee met. They went up to Norris' hotel room and the corridor; there BL explained that Norris' style was fine for tournaments, but not real stuff. Inosanto says that afterwards, Norris got on his knees and bowed (of course, he was exaggerating, Inosanto was just talking like a baseball announcer "the crowd went mad!") in awe. However, I would accept the word 'awe' in that description. Inosanto went on, "With Joe Lewis it was the same thing."

I like the way Sam lies and says that Bruce and Chuck were sparring in the mid to upper 70's when Bruce died in 1970. You're right, Samy was about 2 years old. He didn't know the difference between a snow cone and a snowman. First off, Chuck was one of those "Points fighters" not a Full Contact Fighter, mainly because he would have gotten his ass beaten in his first Full Contact Fight. In my opinion, " Points fighting is total Bullshit. Always was, and always will be. The people who win at points sparring do that because they are afraid to fight in a ring for 5-10 rounds like a real fighter. You don't need any conditioning to POINTS FIGHT. All you have to do is touch the other opponent first. What does that have to do with real Fighting???? " NOTHING" THAT'S WHY CHUCK NORRIS NEVER FOUGHT FULL CONTACT, IS BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN HIS ASS BEAT BY EVERYONE. WHEN I WAS 25 YEARS OLD, I RECEIVED MY BLACK BELT IN ISSHINRYU KARATE. If I could go back in time, I would have challenged Chuck to a 10 round FULL CONTACT FIGHT in front of the world. I'd bet $1,000,000.00 that I would have knocked his ass out within 2 rounds. I only say 2 rounds, because I don't believe that Chuck would have had enough wind to last more than 2 rounds with me. Points fighting is nothing but a bunch of Bull Shit. That's like saying , If I was a White Belt, and I back fisted the world champion in the face only 3 times, that I would have been able to say that I beat the world champion, so, now, I'm the new World Champion. Dream on ! ! Real Full Contact Fighting , you have to train for years like a professional boxer. That's like saying if Mike Tyson was a points fighter instead of The World Champion Boxer, and I was to fight him as a " Points Fighter" and I was lucky enough to jab Iron Mike just 3 times in the first round, then I would be the World Champion, That is " DREAM WORLD THINKING" Ask Mike Tyson what he thinks about that. In a real full contact fight with Mike Tyson, HANDS DOWN, HE WOULD HAVE KILLED ME AND CHUCK NORRIS WITHIN THE FIRST 30 SECONDS OF THE 1ST ROUND... I can't believe the things that come out of people's mouths about the difference between POINTS FIGHTERS and REAL...FULL CONTACT FIGHTERS. HANDS DOWN 100 TO 1...BRUCE LEE WOULD HAVE NEVER LOST A FIGHT IN HIS WHOLE LIFE. I WISH HE WOULD HAVE FOUGHT FULL CONTACT, JUST TO PROVED TO THE WORLD THAT HE WAS BY FAR, " THE BEST FIGHTER IN THE WORLD...NO MATTER WHAT WEIGHT CLASS YOU PUT HIM IN. "NEED I SAY MORE?????

Well, Chuck trained with Bruce off and on whenever they could, and he does credit Bruce with helping him improve his footwork and his hand speed. Joe Lewis as well, Bruce helped him improve his footwork and hand speed, and both credit Bruce for helping them become better fighters. Chuck has continued to evolve as a fighter, working with the Gracie’s to learn BJJ. I could believe they went back and forth. Chuck was a multiple time world champion, and Bruce’s fighting philosophy has always been no holds barred, meaning if your going to fight, groin strikes, eye jabs, etc were all on the table, so in just a sparring match where your focus is on footwork and technique, yes I could easily see Chuck and Bruce going back and forth.

Bruce died in 1973. Also, can the interviewer check if the sparring sessions were during the start of JKD, or after Bruce went deeper into it? I'm asking because many top fighters of that era said Bruce could not be touched, and even Chuck admitted nobody could beat Bruce. Muhamad Ali's bodyguard sparred Bruce and said Bruce was like a shadow - untouchable. Also - I detect the interviewee being a little biased - because even Joe Lewis himself said Bruce could hit extremely hard.

There was one story where Jesse Glover and another guy were with Bruce Lee. Some karate guy challenged Bruce. So since they didn't have any place they could fight/spar Jesse advised Bruce to go to the YMCA indoor handball court. So the guy with Jesse and Bruce would keep time and Jesse would also watch. When the guy with the timer said "Go" Bruce and the Karate guy started to fight. Karateka guy tried to kick and punch Bruce. From what Jesse and the other guy recounted from that moment, Jesse said that Bruce was countering and dodging all the guys kicks and punches and countered with punches of his own. The karate guy's head was bobbing back and forth and his arms were flailing from how hard Bruce was hitting his head. Then as the karate guy went on floor Bruce got soo pissed that he kicked the karate guy in the face and he fell on his back. That is when Jesse yelled to stop the fight. Jesse Glover was one of Bruce's black studens who he trained back in the 60's and even gave him permission to train JKD to future students. I don't think Chuck would've stood a chance against Bruce in a real fight. Bruce Lee was one of those guys that really saw the need for things that would help you to survive in a street fight.

Norris was beaten badly by Lee during sparring, Norris admitted this in the early years, but once he became a movie star Chuck's ego kicked in, and soon Chuck was no longer admitting defeat to Lee, rather he started implying that he was better, which is nonsense. James Demile would have DESTROYED Chuck Norris, and James admits that he had absolutely no chance against Lee. Jon Benn played the bad guy in Lee's second film. At the time he met Lee he had lived in Hong Kong for 20 years or more. Anyway, they became friends and Lee's family often vacationed at Benn's home on Lantau (island off HK and site of small Disneyland). Benn wrote his bio, which has lots of storys on Lee. One of them is that Benn was having dinner in Manila with Chuck Norris. He asked him, "Who would win in a real fight, you or Bruce?" Norris graciously replied, "Bruce of course. Nobody could beat him." You can also look up many other interviews of people who were there (Lee's life), such as Dan Inosanto, who is considered a true gentleman with great integrity. He said, "Without naming names I saw Bruce spar with all the top champions of the era, and he was on a far different level." Also look up remarks of Mike Tyson (there's even a photo of Iron Mike wearing a Bruce Lee shirt!), Sugar Ray Leonard, Manny Pacquiao for more expert opinion. No, these guys weren't there, but they have the 'master's eye.'

I know this is based on the word of a stranger, but a decade or 2 ago Chuck did admit in an interview the truth. He was chuckling when he said it. Paraphrasing a little " When Bruce had called me after 2 years of not hearing from him, with a movie offer" I asked him " is this because you want to beat the champ?" to which Bruce said "No, I want to kill him." Well Chuck said they were still friends and all, but there developed a level of competition that wasn't there before. They had their own little match, more serious than the others they had many times before. Chuck said that for at least the first decade or 2 after, his ego wouldn't allow him to admit what happened...he was the "World Champ", then went on to say that Bruce was so fast, just so fast....he toyed with me I felt. I have since tried to find that footage....zero luck, but I know what I saw. I had earned a yellow belt in Kempo (woopie), when a friend turned me onto JKD, so I was really interested in all things Bruce. Now there were guys who beat him....but most masters of the time were discreet, and so was Bruce when it came to such matters, it all depended on how his opponent handled the situation, some called him out in public on movie sets....most were like with Chuck...it was between them. I am a huge fan of Bruce still, but most misunderstand what made him great....his mind. If you were to bring Bruce back now in prime form, with what he knew... Aldo or Connor would beat him....give Bruce a year to catch up....I give it to Bruce. However I can't see him being able to do 2 weight classes like Connor.

The timeline is wrong. He said early 70's. Bruce was in Hong Kong doing movies. Chuck himself had said in interviews he had not heard from Bruce in yrs when he called him to ask if he would do the Way of the Dragon. Maybe between 67 & 70 is where this might of taken place. Sam also says they were very controlled when they sparred. let me say this. Chuck did not box back then. The fight between Chuck & Skipper Mullins Chuck takes a shot in the mouth & time is stopped to let him recover. I dont like the way he reacts when he got hit. Makes me wonder what would happen if he really took a shot from someone with say boxing gloves on during the full contact days. Chuck retired from competition just as full contact kick boxing was getting started.Bruce on the other hand loved boxing & would spar with his crew of students he had. Bruce was way ahead of Chuck in his training. Chuck would eventually do these things like grappling , boxing but Bruce did it first. I think Chuck was lucky those were controlled sparring matches because if not Bruce really does a number on him. Sam said that the lighter guy might land 15 to 20 shots well I dont think Chuck could take that many shots from Bruce where as I think Bruce could handle several shots from the heavier Norris. This is true. Even with one punch, anyone would be hurting (not to mention the series he was capable of initiating)..cuz his fists were so hard by training on the Teakwood dummy. I saw him continuously hit that...then use the linament for treatment. Also much Wing Chun is forearm training with the wooden dummy and that is what he later incorporated into JKD on striking, but originally was used mainly for block defense...(quite the secret weapon in sparring). If you have not developed equally hard forearms, any block to your own forearms will soon create so much pain that your arms won't be hardly functionable. Bruce's forearms were like steel....even at 19 yr old when I met him (1959). Not just hard; but like steel. That was the first thing he showed me and my father that won my father to enroll me in his class...as his first child student.

He explained what happened 4:20 to 4:35 He's being very nice. Diplomatic. Like everyone else does. No one ever gives a straight realistic answer. Joe Lewis has come closest. Same deal with the Wong Jack-Man challenge match. WJM was interviewed in China Pacific Weekly January 28th 1965 by the way. His version is very different than Linda Lee's. The only neutral party there was William Chen a local Taijiquan teacher at the time. He refuses to give a straight answer. But his matches up with WJM's fairly well. Chen stating that they basically sparred for 20 minutes until Lee was unable to continue due to being too winded. Well, look at the aftermath. Bruce Lee tossed Wing Chun, blasts it and all Southern Kung Fu as ineffective and unable to adapt. He becomes obsessed with cardio conditioning and strength training, and starts training with Tae Kwan Do kicking master Jhoon Rhee in 1965 and in 66 starts working out with Joe Lewis and Jim Kelly adding Chuck Norris in 67. That's 3 professional world champion full contact fighters. There's your information. That's what tells you what happened or would happen if Bruce Lee sparred Chuck Norris. Or Joe Lewis or Jim Kelly.

That's what tells us what happened November 1964 when childhood actor Bruce Lee, who learned Sil Lum Tao and half of Chum Kiu forms of Wing Chun under Ip Man's assistant instructor Wong Shun-leung... fought or heavy sparred Northern Longfist and Xingyiquan teacher Wong Jack-Man. I train and teach Northern Longfist, Xingyiquan, and Northern Mantis and train some Wing Chun and Hung Gar by the way. Xingyi is like a more aggressive Wing Chun without the trapping. Northern Longfist is an extremely strenuous cardio and explosive power Long Range fighting system with fast agile footwork. Uses lots of High kicks in the long range and in close it switches to hand and elbow strikes that flow right into take downs or throws. Wing Chun is really good in close self defense. It's a good system to side train in because it's not strenuous and you can do the forms in a small bedroom. As they're done in one fixed position high modified pigeon toed horse. Called pinching goat horse. Forms look just like centerline Tai Chi. No kicks in Sil Lum Tao. Chum Kiu and Bui Gee have a low side and low front kick. After the fight Bruce said that doesn't work. Began serious cardio conditioning. Learned some Northern Mantis and Tae Kwan Do kicking and footwork. Started training with real world professional fighters.

I think where all the confusion comes into play, and I was guilty of it myself, is we tend to take an idealized image of 1972 Bruce Lee with his years years of training with Jhoon Rhee and professional champion fighters Joe Lewis, Jim Kelly and Chuck Norris... And we place that version along with some of what we hear and what we see in movies and remakes... And we place that 1972 idealized Bruce Lee back in Oakland CA Summer 1964. Before the WJM. Before meeting all the professionals he trained with for year. Then it's easy to say "oh Bruce Lee absolutely whopped Wong Jack-Man! This is the legend who taught Him Kelly and Chuck Norris!" (Except he didn't even know them until 3 years later) And then we say "oh no way Joe Lewis or Chuck Norris beat Bruce Lee in Sparring! Bruce is the founder of Jeet Kune Do. Which he made by compiling all the different systems he trained." Well most of Jeet Kune Do is Kickboxing he learned from Joe Lewis, Jim Kelly and Chuck Norris with a bunch of Northern Mantis he got from Secrets of the Mantis Boxing Art (螳螂拳術闡秘), 1946, Volume 1 of Wong Honfan’s Northern Mantis Boxing and from taking classes for 2 months learning Bong Bo Quan. Side note his students took Bruce's copy of that book he made notes it and put several of the techniques in the posthumous Tao Of Jeet Kune Do book. Book sold for $88,000 in auction by the way. The reality is the actual timeline, page 28 of his 1963 book regarding kicking, the aftermath of the WJM challenge match and what he wrote January 11th 1970 in his letter to his instructor Wong Shun-Leung: "Since I started to practice realistically in 1966 (Protectors, gloves, etc.), I feel that I had many prejudices before, and they are wrong. So I change the name of the gist of my study to Jeet-kune-do. Jeet-kune-do is only a name. The most important thing is to avoid having bias in the training. Of course, I run everyday, I practice my instruments (punch, kick, throw, etc.). I have to improve my fundamentals daily. "

If BL while alive, mustered all of his energy in one punch, or kick and had an opportunity to hit any of us. he'd kill us with ease. Also, we've all heard alot of these delusional martial artist, and fighter's exclaime they could've easily beaten Bruce. The time frame was the early 1970's when Norris had his studios. I had the opportunity to have Norris and Johnson (at different times) stop in and do some teaching. It wasn't often; however, it was one of those thing you remember. Pat Coughlan (spelling of last name?) was the resident instructor at the Norris studio in Los Angeles. Good instructor.

When I hear Bruce Lee I think of a crappy, cocky actor who couldn't really fight (and actually never fought real fights) who has profited from hear-say after his death. Just watch his shitty training videos ("punches" at the bag and the kicks at the big pad) ... it's embarrassing how bad his technique is: He has no fucking clue how to transfer weight into punches or how to kick hard while maintaining balance ... it's ridiculous. Though I appreciate him for being a popularizer of martial arts I really get annoyed by this damn myths about his fighting skills and how he is "the father" of MMA ... No he isn't and no he wasn't a real fighter. We talk about a time when other very established fighters were mixing styles and fought everyone who would challenge them ... but who gets the praise? a cocky actor with no real fighting experience ... Newsflash: Gene LeBelle already fought a freestyle fight on TV, Muay Thai was aleady established for decades ... mixed styles like Sambo, German JuJutsu or Vale Tudo were also around ... Jon Bluming and Oyama were already experienced martial artists and Billy the Jet was already winning his first tournaments .. but yeah .. tell me more hearsay about Bruce Lee ... because 'Murica I guess ...

Xul newsflash 99.9999% of all the pro fighter of his time and even 99.997% of pros today said he was as good as they say. Fighters today say they can tell from his speed and movement that he a real threat. Conor McGregor says only Bruce could kick his ass. I will take McGregor’s and thousands of pro fighters opinion over keyboard warriors’ opinions like yours any day.

rance davis well said Randy! Completely agree..the guy in the interview would have been far too young too remember, let alone be sparring with anyone in the late 60's early 70's ..he seems to have a memory like Steven Seagal..ha ha ..whom as you may know, has said on RU-vid that he used to hangout with Bruce Lee..ha ha(he expects people to believe that Bruce Lee would have been hanging out with someone 12yrs younger than him) in the late 60's early 70's...People should just admit the Truth! Bruce Lee was and is the Greatest!

If ever anyone says anything that goes against what you fanboys want to believe, they are fucking liars. Anybody who says something positive about Bruce without evidence and you start wetting yourselves. Kelley knew Bruce for about 6 weeks while filming ETD, mostly in Hong Kong. As Norris wasn't in that movie, it's highly unlikely Norris was even in the company of both Lee and Kelley at the same time. Apparently, Jim also had said in 1992 that he never saw Bruce spar. Wonder why he didn't name anyone that he saw Bruce beat ??

Its not just Jim Kelly that knows Lee was legit : Michael Chan , Tony Liu......but haters will of course claim these are paid by the estate IMO , both Ing Sik and Ji Han Jae are jealous of Lee , Ing Sik was pompous on the set of Way : "Lee is just an actor , I am a real fighter"........then Lee brought him down to earth again pretty quickly lol

Bruce Lee was phenomenal! He didn't compete because he was only interested in self-defense/survival type fighting. Chuck Norris is also awesome! He has proven stand up skills (Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and has trained in kick boxing/boxing) and grappling (BJJ, Judo, etc). Who's the best? Who cares?

This guy is a LIAR !! Yes, I am a True Bruce Lee Fan, however, I can put my bias aside, if someone was speaking the TRUTH ! How do I know the truth when I was only 1.5 years of age when Bruce Lee passed away and wasn't around to see shit. That is true but, if you can understand the art of fighting, the mind set needed along with the desire and the belief in your abilities to come out on top and be the Warrior, Chuck had some of those qualities Bruce had them all. I have listen to, watched, read many many books, listened to many stories, from the people who all new Bruce well and from their stand point, I cannot take it in that they were all conspiring to lie and make Bruce Bigger then he was without anything to gain. Danny Inosanto, has no reason to lie. Neither does James Coburn or anyone else for that matter. They all said that Bruce was the best of that time. Jim Kelly said it many times, NO ONE IN OUR ERA, COULD HAVE BEATEN BRUCE. BRUCE WAS JUST THAT GOOD. JUST A STEP AHEAD OF EVERYONE. what does he have to gain for saying these things when Bruce was All ready dead ? The 3 assholes who NEVER GAVE BRUCE CREDIT WERE, MIKE STONE, CHUCK NORRIS AND JOE LEWIS. However, it was all 3 of them that came to Bruce's house to train. Not the other way around. Mike Stone trained with Bruce. CHUCK NORRIS HAS THE AUDACITY TO SAY, we trained together. More exchanging Idea's. I taught Bruce the high kicks. Bruce got all three of those fuckers involved in the Movies. Even gave Chuck Norris a big part which made him. Not the other way around. Bruce lived and breathes Martial arts from the time he got up until the time he went to bed. His forearms were like grabbing a steel pipe. His punches were as fast as lighting. His kicks were sent out with such force that once he stood there and kicked a palm tree so hard the tree shook and vibrated all the way to the top. Bruce while training them did have his way with each of them that while given interviews with all three, the interviewer asked Bruce if he thinks he is the best fighter in the world. Bruce humbly said, I will never ever claim to be number one. But I will never ever claim to be number two either. Why didn't one of them Say, hey, Bruce don't you remember that I beat your ass in sparring yesterday? Because they knew he was the best and they respected their sensi, or teacher at the time. Now that Bruce is no longer with us. They talk like Bruce was nothing but a movie star and Bruce was not a real fighter. Really? Ok. Oh and by the way, out of all the movies Chuck has made or played in none of them can match the greatest martial arts movie ever made. Enter the dragon. Guest who the lead actor was ??? Lol. RIP Bruce even in death I have your back !!!

Well this guy is like everyone else. He doesn't think out side the box like Bruce did. In his opinion chuck had the upper hand because he was bigger. The problem is everyone back then and to this day are still very inside the box. Bruce was always a street fighter. No rules and anything goes. He taught people to bite, scratch, eye poke and so on. Bruce would drag people to the ground by the ear. In a fight who would expect someone to go for their ear? It's definitely effective! All the greats back then had sport fighting engrained in them not real fighting. To me that gives Bruce the advantage.

Now I love Chuck Norris I'm a huge fan he's awesome I love his movies he's a great fighter was a great fighter is a great martial artist hands down but I've seen this so-called super fast spin kick in his movies as well as in his matches it is not super fast is about the same speed as I would do it if I was in better shape like I used to be and I was not super duper fast Bruce Lee was super duper fast and that does not even cover his speed

Chuck still knows this to this day hitting Bruce in sparring session was like trying to hit a ghost zero chance he'd last in a real fight with Bruce Lee. Bruce was so strong he could take a 120lb barbell or 75 barbell and hold it straight out for over 30 seconds. You know why there is no Bruce Lee Jokes because Bruce Lee was no joke..
