INT. STAN'S HOUSE - DAY
Stan walks in the door from school, takes off his back pack, sets it down and closes the door.
Then he walks over to the living room, to find his dad sitting on the couch with a blanket wrapped around him, half eyes, and several empty beer bottles on the coffee table. Stan's dad takes a swig.
STAN
Dad, what the hell are you doing?!
STAN'S DAD
Hello, Stan...
STAN
Dad, it's the middle of the DAY! I thought you weren't going to drink as much anymore!
STAN'S DAD
No, Stan, you don't understand. I have a DISEASE. Daddy's very sick.
STAN
WHAT? Did you GO to your A.A. meeting?!
STAN'S DAD
Yes, they're the ones that told me. I thought I could just quit drinking on my own - but it's an ILLNESS, son. I have to admit that I'm POWERLESS to this terrible disease.
(coughs)
Then he takes a slurp of beer and-
STAN'S DAD
(belches)
STAN
Dad, you've had enough. Just stop now.
STAN'S DAD
I CAN'T! I'm SICK!
(cries)
Dad storms out, carrying his beer.
INT. BATHROOM - DAY
Stan's dad stumbled into the bathroom and walks to the mirror, where he looks at his half-eyed reflection and starts to weep.
STAN'S DAD
It's not fair...
(up to God)
Why did you give ME this disease?!
(cries some more, and then-)
Stan's dad picks up clippers and turns them on. ZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Stan's dad slowly runs the clippers through his hair, leaving a bald stripe.
STAN'S DAD
(crying)
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Stan is at the kitchen table, pouring some milk into a glass with both hands. Then he hears-
STAN'S DAD (O.S.)
Stan?! Stan?!
Stan runs out.
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Stan's dad is sitting in a wheel chair, bald, with a blanket over his legs.
STAN'S DAD
Stan...
STAN
Aw, God dammit!
STAN'S DAD
Stan I need your help-
STAN
Dad! What are you doing in Grandpa's extra wheelchair?!
STAN'S DAD
I've got to try and take it easy from now on, son. Get daddy another beer, will you?
STAN
NO! You don't need another beer.
STAN'S DAD
I KNOW THAT! But this disease is just eating me up! I HATE my illness!
STAN
Dad, you just need to NOT DRINK so much. It's VERY SIMPLE!
STAN'S DAD
I wish it was that simple, son. But if I don't give myself up to a higher power, this disease is going to kill me dead. I'm afraid that the only thing which is going to cure me... Is a MIRACLE.

Taken from the episode: Bloody Mary (2005) from season 9 of south park (1997-present) This episode of course originally aired on December 7th 2005 on comedy central! and in this episode: Stan is embarrassed when his dad gets pulled over for drunk driving! Randy believes that the only way that can cure him for his hankering drinking disease is a bleeding statue of the Virgin Mary in the next town! South Park (1997-present) A comedy central original series that's been going strong since 1997 of course!

They've gone back on their stance that addiction being a disease being a crutch and feel bad about it. But if you watch the episode again they're more talking about the kind of person who WOULD use it as a crutch. Addiction is an extremely hard challenge to overcome but too many people can stop trying because they see the disease aspect as an inevitable reason for their failure to put in the necessary effort to overcome. The amount of people that fail to overcome this problem would be different if it accounted for the number of people that actively tried to resist and eventually come out victorious.
@masterblaster2678

@Buck Fiden "Unmotivated to win" perfectly describes that kind of mindset. Glad you got better! It requires incredible self control to overcome an addiction. Acquiring that strength will go a long way :)

It's the same with any addiction - for years and years I smoked, when I tried to quit I went to E-cigs, patches, these weird pills. @wolfumz
@wolfumz 2 года назад
yeah this episode is not accurate for 12 step groups IMO. The 12 steps do not say you are powerless over the disease of alcoholism. They say you are powerless over alcohol. That is, after an alcoholic starts ingesting alcohol, they lose the power to have control over their drinking, or they lose the power to make good choices. An alcoholic cannot change what alcohol does to their body and mind. That is something they are powerless over. I get it if you're talking about how people just use the 12-step approach to continue to make themselves the victim, or continue to wreak havoc. I've seen that happen for sure. But Randy is deeply confused about what AA actually says.

I didn’t become a full blown alcoholic but when I was in a heavy depression I used shit like booze for a crutch to a very very unhealthy degree and had I continued could have seriously gotten to that point. It wasn’t til I started having my body in withdraw after not having alcohol for it to like actually sink in. Ultimately you need to take charge and realize that you need to take initiative to actually improve your situation instead of avoiding your issues with alcohol yes, but I really don’t envy people in that position at all.

Good on you for getting your buddy to a meeting. I've been sober for 3 years now and its not as easy as people think. Of course people go through the phase randy was in, but it does get to a point where your body is dependent on it and you need medical attention to quit. People sometimes die from alcohol withdrawal. I got pretty bad off before I eventually quit.

Haha I could see that if you don’t understand what’s going on it can be overwhelming and weird. Discussion meetings can get super real and super dirty. It’s meant to be that way. You’re getting your thoughts/feelings out as they are unfiltered and with that can bring understanding and closeness. Probably a better meeting to go to if you’re new is a speaker meeting.

I had to go to AA for years when I was a young man, a half decade later I’m 25 with my shit together. This episode truly is the most profound South Park ep I’ve ever seen, and it’s profundity is shown thru humor. Them lampooning the hive mind concept of AA, that being a drunk is a disease, and you should take zero accountability for your drinking, and don’t even bother with discipline or limiting your drink intake…This episode is genius, and it sticks it in the face of all those annoying parroted AA tropes. I will always love this episode for that
@DellaStreet123
@DellaStreet123 Год назад
I attended exactly one AA meeting, and that was before I had a drinking problem -- I just went to keep somebody company. Learned helplessness and forced positivity. I think the main reason alcoholism was recognized as a disease in the 1940s is that, without being diagnosed with a disease, you cannot get treatment for something, and your health care provider cannot reimburse you for treatment for something non-existent. Physical dependence on alcohol or some other substance that causes withdrawal symptoms is an illness, but taking up drinking or refusing to stop when things are going into the wrong direction, those are largely choices.
