This video is perfect 1980s. Although I lived through it, I still struggle to understand how all the idealism of the previous decades turned into "Greed is good."
Among the many things that make me happy about this is the thought that there was a day in the late 1980s where you might have seen Mark Knopfler playing guitar while being driven though Los Angeles sitting on a chair strapped to a truck.
Really love this song and the video- the 1980's hair doos, the high thigh-cut thongy bathing suits, the fat rich dude lyp-syncing, Randy as a little boy searching for answers Mark Knopfler's crisp guitar work, dancing midgets....brilliant piece of work by the permanently underappreciated Randy Newman.
Classic Buick. Great music video. Tongue in cheek. Randy does it again ! "It's Money That Matters". It's true, especially here in the USA. Way back in the day, German workers were paid 3 times a day to give to their spouses/family because money was being devalued every day. Does money matter? You know it.
TJ Publishing LLC JONES Pretty shitty. Thanks for asking. BTW, you still alive? Go to a Trump rally soon to fix that existence problem. Free Coronas all round.
I'm 37 years old so I can honestly say my first exposure to Randy Newman's music was when the first Toy Story came out. I've been a fan ever since. Randy still remains one of the few musicians whom I can really feel in my soul when I hear any of his music.
"Nobody like him nowhere" - I get the reference. By the way, the "big, nasty redhead" seen in several of Mr. Newman's videos has a name: Laura Howard (Granito).
The memories... Fall '88...driving to classes at FAU on either the Florida Turnpike or I-95...having the radio on and hearing this. Thanks for posting this, Randy!.
I was doing the Run Portion of a Triathlon in Clermont , Fl. and shouting " It's Money that matters" to a buddy running towards me, in 1989. Never will forget it.
@@scottlarson1548 Maybe. I remember going on a summer trip in August 1988 and I remember hearing it then. IDK though the way my memory has been lately I may have my wires crossed...LOL
@@gabelogan56 "Rich relations may give you a crust of bread and such/You can help yourself/but don't take too much/Mama may have/Papa may have/But God bless the child that's got his own...every child's gotta have his own." I always thought that Randy and Billie Holiday sang songs about how life really operates.
Well... the song is timeless. Production style of the music is supremely dated. Sounds like Huey Lewis tune. I'd prefer just Randy and his piano for almost all of his songs. Still love this tho!! Just sharing my opinion on the mundane aspects ha
The lyrics are true if you’re greedy and only care about material things. If you spend your life thinking money is all that matters you’ll end up wasting your life thinking that
Ah yes the song wherein lies the crux of why the planet is doomed. Those" working for the cause", the righteous, those concerned for the common good are powerless before those who really matter ..those with money.
Is it my imagination or did I see a few shots of Robin Leach in this video? I really loved this song when it came out - kudos to Randy using Mark Knopfler for the hook.
Brian Nealon This is not the same redhead from _I Love LA_ . She is a nice copy, but _Land Of Dreams_ was 10 years after _I Love LA_ video from the _Trouble In Paradise_ album. Laura Howard was in the 1983 video for _I Love LA_ . She is now married and living 1000 miles or so from Los Angeles. This actress may be the same actress in the video for _Falling In Love_ , but I do not know this new actress' name. Here's a thread Laura Howard contributed to, and clarified she wasn't *Big Nasty Redhead* 2.0 neanderpundit.com/?p=6227
Money answers all things concerning mens accomplishments but God through Christ preserves the soul and turns one's heart from stone to flesh because he perfected it . For you fellow jews out there read ISAIAH 53 for its an insight of the Messiah.
*From The Great Rock Music Renaissance of the 1980s. Great Music and Great Time Growing Up in America. Thank You Great Almighty Lord Above for filling the Air with Harmony. Mark Knopfler produced some beast rock chords in his day. One of Randy's best tunes.*
@Gary Jackson You are correct. Marxism does not work, and never can. The thing here is that Marx was an idealist who thought that people could live and work together peacefully for the common good. In fact, pure Marxism doesn't need a government. However, most of us understand that human nature doesn't work that way, and Marx's vision was perverted into communism, which, in practice, functions as the worst kind of feudalism, only without the fancy titles.
Newman was a favorite of intellectuals early on due to his sarcastic and satirical lyrics. However, it would be far too short-sighted to describe him as a satirist or comedian, as he also wrote very touching, serious texts. Musically, Newman is influenced by blues, rock and ragtime on the one hand, but on the other hand he often provides his songs with sophisticated classical orchestral arrangements. The pleasant and often catchy music often contrasts with the often biting or profound lyrics. His versatility as a songwriter and arranger is renowned.
That Mark Knopfler guitar tone with Randy's irony-filled, sarcastic, biting, arrogant, obnoxious, politically incorrect, controversial voice of vinegar perfection -- goes together like dark chocolate and potato chips. No one like Randy out there. No one. He really found two great niches -- songs like this one & children's music for movies. Ha. Even Frank Zappa never thought of that.
I discovered Randy in his 1970 Album "12 Songs." As an English major, I "got" the album's simple cover photo of two chairs in somebody's backyard: a big rocking chair and a little child's chair. Of course! William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience." Some of the Experience songs were pretty brutal; the Innocence one's sweet and dreamy.
Money, it's ALL that matters... Families; friends, brothers, sisters, even the government. SPECIFICALLY the government making sure the wealthy stay that way because it's only money that matters...
