Range balls often are designed to not go as far. Its to help keep them within the fences. Range balls also get worn out compared to a regular ball. On top of that, you are comparing a top of the line ball. So 3 main factors equal less distance. 32 yards less...not so bad.
I mean the range ball was hit almost 5 miles an hour slower. I don’t think that difference is 30 yards but if it’s a used range ball it could have scuffs on it which would effect it CoD. I’m guessing the really result would be closer to a 5 to 10 yards and is that 5-10 yards worth the almost 5 dollars a ball? Ehh idk.
I went to a Top Golf once and I was puring them. I usually hit pitching wedge like 140. I annihilated one and it went 117. Plus I was on the second level, so it was downhill. The balls were clearly wrecked.
@@adamseidel9780 Idk, I went to a Top Golf out in Arizona and they were going my normal distances (arguably farther, actually), but the one in Philly were going like 65% max. Pured shots would just die in the air and go nowhere.
And also they need to do the test without knowing which ball is which. Because placebo is 10000% affecting his swing here whether he knows it subconsciously or not. They need to somehow make it so the person hitting doesn’t know it’s a “test” and also needs to “think” he’s hitting 1 same high ended branded ball the whole time.
No offense martin, the range ball definitely had 3mph more club speed, but the misshit was exceptionally more. 1.42 instead of 1.48 like the first. Probably cut that 30 in half.
So about 10% when normalized. Moreover, range balls are seldom “premium”. More often they are inconsistently distributed between crap and horse sh*t. This variance in performance makes distance calibration on a range very difficult.
And illustrates why you hit range balls to groove a swing, work on correcting flaws but not to zero in your clubs' yardage gaps. Pros working on their game, whether on the range or during practice rounds never use range balls.
The range I go to, I hit the range balls about 25-30 yards less carry with my driver. The launch monitor says 280 and the corresponding flag they are landing near is 250.
@@playdiscgolf1546 honestly alot of range balls aren't too far off smash factor wise, especially off low loft clubs like drivers. The issue really comes with their aerodynamics. When you order range balls there are tiers designed to fly different % in the air. Essentially the dimple pattern is designed to drag and drop the ball earlier, so you can tailor them to your range size.
@@AnthonyC90what? Range balls are typically just regular balls you buy. They just buy balls in bulk from a manufacturer and put a different logo or something on them. They are the same ball but are refurbished a few times and lose distance.
@@stompingpeak2043 Range balls are 2 piece construction, are heavier so they don't fly as far, and made with more durable materials (lower quality). They really don't fly as far so don't swing harder than normal to make up the difference, you're defeating the purpose of your practice. 32 yards could be 10%
It makes sense why, because if you used regular balls, the amount of land on the range would have to be larger so as to not have them going out the back with the big hitters. So with heavier balls that spin more it means that the range needs less land, and the balls are closer together to get picked up which means rate of lost balls is reduced.
That is a big reason, and those range balls are just cheaper to make. Unless you have a launch monitor and are trying to dial in yardages, then a range ball is just fine to work on your swing. However like i said it’s bad for dialing in irons and woods when the ball goes that much less then on a real course real ball.
The most important thing is that range balls are built to last long. If I play 1 ProV1 or Chrome Soft for 18 holes I won't use it on a different tournament. That ball is a little messed up. If a golf club doesn't buy new range balls regularly they have to be sturdy.
@@midnightbluenoz yup ikr. Some ranges can buy regular distance range balls but usually opt not to for economical reasons. Add 10-15 to your drive and about 10 to every other club and youll be good 👍
I always thought i was too bad for the ball to make a difference but since i got some titleist pro v1s Ive actually noticed a reasonable difference in my golf game and im a mid 20s handicap
Take all the range ball yardages with a grain of salt. I look at shot shape and flight etc. But keep in mind, range balls are soaked in water and some kind of solvent so that they are clean. It doesn't take long for new ones to loose their new shine and start leaving marks on your club faces
I always retire a couple of old Bridgestones or Titlelists at the range when finishing my driver session to see how much farther they go (25-50 yds +).... did it really say his club head speed was 142mph?!? that's the ball speed of my 3wd.
Obviously the pga tour has a personality problem and it will only get worse. Personality is a funny thing in golf. Xander did have personality compared to all the vanilla on Tour but After the major win his personality rockets up (as happens with most players). Morikawas situation is similar. He’s not vanilla and has majors so he’s a personality. Biggest wonder at the minute is if LIv is making a renewed effort for Xander for next year now that he has 5 years of majors. Bryson may not be tiger but right now he is waaaaaay ahead of everyone in golf, including Tiger, on showmanship and personality. I did not know you had a law degree. Impressive. When Phil and Tiger played “the match” they had to pay the pga tour 1$ million Phil said; as you also mentioned. …the pga tour only allows some things through sponsors like with their permission. Regardless the lack of clarity from the pga tour makes the point. They make up rules as they go. Bryson and Phil had to go to do the things they wanted to do. Imo The best thing for everyone is guys like dunne and Rory taking a back seat and staying there. . I still can’t believe loose cannon Rory cannot be on the board (justifiably since he quit like some other things) but can be in this super important negotiation. How are the guys who kept him off the board ok with this ? For now LIv has to be offering to back up the brinks truck on Xander and his 5 years of exemptions. Any personality the X man lacks, we get in spades from the Ogre 👹; maybe the only man in golf with more personality than Bryson right now. He was missed at Valhalla. I would have loved to see him celebrate with Xander.
32 yrds at what overall distance ? Are we talking 5,10 or 15 percent ? Ive always been of the understanding that range balls are 90 percent of premium . Some older range balls can get really weird flights , kind of messes up hitting consistent shots . Well thats my excuse …..
Mind blowing that you'd make this video without BALL SPEED, totally irrelevant stats really. More club speed more off centre, who knows what got transitioned to the ball. I agree with the outcome but couldn't be less scientific
Smash factor was noticeably higher on the Callaway. I'd do this with a larger sample size and with a near identical stats as possible. Same AoA, same Launch, same club speed, everything. 1 to 1 is not conclusive enough.
Okay so rizzle me thizzle: how come on the range I can hit the ball far but on the course I have to go a club up? Example on the range I can hit my 7 160 easy but on the course I can hit my 7 max 150. Why? I mean I have a couple ideas in my head why, but why?
So I assume this absolute monster of a human being drove that 300 + yards. So that represents about 10-15% distance lost with range ball. I wonder if that % Holds true though the irons.
Yeah, but I can get a Range balls for free. The other ball is about $4.50 a ball. Plus, if I lose a range ball, which my skill indicates I will be likely to, it's much easier to replace.
I just have a quick question if anyone in the comments section can answer I was told anything above a 1.4 smash is great when I was doing a club fitting, especially since it was consistent, is that true?
32 yards… sideways. How much difference from each ball’s landing point to the tee box? As in actual carry? Yes range balls are shorter than real balls, but this is not accurately measured at all.
I would expect 99% wouldn't notice as much of a difference because they don't generate nearly the same clubhead speed. Will there be a difference? Oh yeah, the range will not go as far.
Uh, I suppose if you had sliced the Callaway a hundred yards right, you’d be saying it’s a hundred yards longer? You can only measure the way you did if the two balls and tee box are all in a straight line.
Wait was t smash like 6 higher on chrome soft ? We get it bud you are sponsored alright Ok it’s better than a range ball I was joking but idk if it’s 32 yards better.
Club fitting is as much of a con as new clubs. The reason amateurs are poor at golf is because they don’t strike the ball properly or consistently. It has nothing to do with equipment.
How many tines is this guy gonna hit a long drive....show us he can't chip...and tell us things we knew already like range balls are worse til he's gotta go back to being a firefighter or what ever
That's the fallacy of pros ttelling amateurs that they need to practice more and learn the distance they hit all of their clubs with different shots. Using range balls teaches us nothing about the distance we hit balls on the course. Touring pros hit Pro V1s on the range.
Our course recently installed Trackman Range. You can turn on or off the setting that adjusts for the limited flight of the range balls. I have done a similar test on the range by using a normal ball and have had the same results.
Sure but what about the fact that i can play 17 holes with 1 battered range ball but as soon as i break out a Pro V1 I drive it directly into the water.
I want to see a video of 2 of the same balls, but one is new and the other has been outside for a week, getting rained on and seeing temp changes. Compare a new ball to a ball that you find on the course.
I get what you're doing here. I'm not saying anything negative when I say this but the range ball was a better shot because you're not in the rough lol
