Hello and welcome
A series within a series to reinstate the EAS Electronic Air Suspension.
In this episode I get down and dirty to identify the reason why this particular car was converted to springs.

Richard, you’ve got the patience of Job! I’m glad my P6 has old school suspension.

But there is nothing standard about Rover P6 suspension

A masterclass of calm persistence, patience and the process of elimination there, Richard... rather than giving in to what must have been an increasing urge to give the thing a damned good thrashing with a tree branch, Basil Fawlty style! Or do we get to see that bit in the Outtakes Reel next Xmas? 😏 Tell you what, once they've possessed a vehicle, those Lode Lane EAS gremlins don't like moving out without a bloody good battle do they?!

This one took a while, mainly me educating myself as to how the system worked and where the fault may be. Battling with a 30 year old system "put together" by Land Rover, it is always going to be fun

Richard, my test procedure for P38's was initially to disconnected each corners air line at the valve block and fit a snap connect schrader valve. I'd then inflate each corner with an airline to the required height and leaving them over night. In the morning, I'd check if any had dropped and then start spraying everything with soapy water, looking for bubbles. Nine times out of ten it was perished bags causing the loss of air. The main faults with EAS are leaks, however it usually manifests as a knackered pump because it's been constantly running trying to keep up and has just worn out the piston ring. Overall, Land Rover did pretty well with the other components which generally tend to be very reliable if not dealing with constant leaks or poorly maintained dryers.

I can't say or hear the word seal now without making that noise. My wife keeps giving me funny looks...

You wait until someone says something and you respond "fnarr" and they give you the blankest of looks

Every day is a school day, when putting shit together we all say, yeah that's OK, it never is and we should know better.

To stop the self leveling overnight i have replaced the timing control relay with a normal relay on my p38. This ensures the air suspension computer only operates when the ignition is on. Its quite a common mod people do. Not sure if the classic has the same timing control relay setup though. Saves wear on the pumpy as doesnt need to lift itself back up everytime after its silly self leveling.

The Classic does have the same 6hr timed levelling, but it also has a very sensible system on/off switch under the drivers seat. Turn switch off, no more timed levelling!

@peteturier3389 ahh thats what that switch was for on the seat. I should have paid more attention.

Who the hell thought air suspension was a good idea. Someone at land rover was tasked with the job of creating something that would be a pain in the arse and your vehicle would be forever in the garage. I had a Citroen Gs1220 club which had self levelling suspension which was hydraulic and it always worked. So maybe Landover should have gone down that avenue. All you had was a fluid reservoir, hydraulic pump driven by the engine and hydraulic accumulators on each wheel. No fancy valve blocks with solenoids just ports that allowed oil through to maintain correct height which could be adjusted with a mechanical lever to adjust ride height. This was on a 1972 vehicle so way ahead of land rover.

Citroen green blood system was and remains awesome. Air suspension on the classic was the start of development which continues to this day on the current models. Every day is a school day I guess
