I had a friend who worked in an Austin Rover dealership in the 80s. He told us that the cost per spark plug change was multiples for a Jag vs a Mini so a tradition of ripping people off that has endured. What you maybe haven’t factored in is that each technician will need a tea break, lunch break, toilet break plus some diversity training and micro aggression control therapy. Which gets you to 5 hours.

Ian Ross you forgot the time for compliance with H & S, completion of paperwork, walking to the stores for the part and waiting in the queue. Clean up time and putting the tools away! That said, it's not land rover it's an agent and like the co-op can charge what they like for bread, they can do the same for the repairs. Plus, they didn't quote 5 hours, the receptionist stabbed a guess and they dont want the job anyway! The good news is you dont have to accept! But at least he helped to build the phone queue up!

I remember Edd China in his Wheeler Dealer days. He had a fault with the air compressor which needed the piston ring replacing. Back then, there was allegedly only one supplier of the rings and they would only go through a main dealer. Edd had no choice but to buy a second hand unit. At least there has been an improvement in being able to get the individual replacement parts. Well done for pointing out though that main dealers are still scalping owners over quick and easy fixes.

@Strider9655

The dealer would never do that repair, they HAVE to replace the part...... Firstly customers get pissy about high labour costs to simply tighten a screw. Secondly dealerships have a "first time fix" policy, which means they replace everything in that system with new parts. Then you've got safety and liability, someone somewhere decided that doing a quick repair would not be considered safe. Reputation, doing a quick repair that goes wrong again, would be really bad. Training, dealership technicians are trained to replace parts and do basic servicing, they're NOT mechanics, they don't take apart and repair subassemblies, even if they were capable of doing so, they do not possess the certificates for it. This is what you get in modern businesses which are run by admin instead of technical people, layers and layers of BS.

A work colleague of mine is an ex VW tech. They used to get allotted a certain time per job. If they do that job under the stated time they get a bonus for additional work they complete that was scheduled to them for that day/week. So oil changes/cambelts etc get done way quicker than the time customers are charged. I'm sure the same would apply to this job on your Range Rover as well.

@Strider9655

That's a lack of intelligence, all that'll happen is the allotted time will gradually come down until there's no flexibility and they end up working themselves and their colleagues to the bone having to work flat out every single day just to make peanut wages, whilst their bosses and the sales staff and the admin staff sit around making twice as much whilst sitting around drinking free coffee all day.

That's eye watering! You can almost buy a replacement Rangie for that price! The price of the compressor isn't really surprising. I was quoted a similar price for the same part on a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso which has rear air suspension. It was a LOT cheaper to convert the rear suspension to coil springs as used on the poverty spec models. You did absolutely the right thing by not naming names. The only time I use dealers is when the parts are reasonably priced. Not everything is expensive from the dealer and if you can build up a rapport with the parts department they can sometimes help you out.
@DrivewayHustlers
@DrivewayHustlers Год назад
I know , I seen a L322 4.4 v8 petrol for sale the other day for £2000🤣 Well I didn’t know the Picasso had air suspension on the back ! Your right there , it’s always worth a phone call to a dealership for parts , as I have done in the past
@Parknest

It was only the C4 Grand Picasso in Exclusive trim that had rear air suspension. A new compressor would've been the thick end of a grand from the dealer.

Book time for 1 of these on an old range rover is about 1.9hrs and that's including the latest software. A main dealer won't repair a compressor as its not a repair they can guarantee for the 2 year warranty purpose they have to adhere to. Hi, really interesting video. I was amazed at the speed of the repair. Just a point to note on the labour costs. You are absolutely correct that the retailers overhead (tech cost, heat, light etc) is static no matter the age of vehicle. The laddered labour rate is “normally” because a vehicle under 3 years is under manufacturers warranty and so any defect is paid by manufacturer, the retailer network know that the defection rate as soon as a vehicle reaches MOT age (3 years) is high. So some will offer a “free” pre warranty expiry health check to ensure any items that can be claimed are remedied. The vehicle will then have a VHC - vehicle health check for other items, (tyres, suspension etc) so it will then go for MOT. Post 3 years a high percentage are in 2 ownership and are less likely to want to go to a retailer for fear of high costs (and they are!). Hence laddering downwards the labour charge to make it more appealing. The difference is that a retailer will rarely repair component items and more likely to replace to underwrite the repair. There are many independents who have ex-manufacturer trained techs with all the diagnostic technology and charge (potentially) 50% of the retailer labour per hour. The reason is as you have stated - overheads, the retailer will have to adhere to “retailer standards” of appearance, investment in special tools, manufacturer training (there is normally a minimum mandated amount of days attendance per tech…plus a massive volume of space to heat and light).. what’s really interesting is 15 years from now when the internal combustion engine is banned and the only real servicing will be MOT type items or high voltage battery components. Keep up the great work.
@DrivewayHustlers
@DrivewayHustlers Год назад
Thankyou, much appreciated 👍 An interesting read ! In regards to what will happen after 2030 , who knows .. but I still think there will be a u-turn coming upto this date and hydrogen being the front runner
@charliegould5865
@charliegould5865 Год назад
Personally I think the ladder scale of charges for the labour cost is because they know a part changed under warranty will be free of charge, so no profit from parts sales. Whereas on an older vehicle without a warranty they can charge for any parts needed and boost the profit. So new car under warranty no profit from parts means higher labour charge. Older car no warranty extra profit from parts sales lower labour charge. Means repair profit around the same whatever age the vehicle is. If it’s a main dealer or an independent workshop they still have similar overheads, special tooling is still needed to do a job whoever does it. The workshop running costs are very similar, so why does a main dealer workshop charge double what an independent workshop charges. I had a problem with a Toyota Landcruiser, I took it to a main dealer for diagnosis, they told me it was the diesel injection pump £1140 + vat at the time, we didn’t get as far as how much the fitting cost was but at £96 +vat it wasn’t going to be cheap. I wasn’t convinced of this because of how the car drove, so I got a second diagnosis from an independent diesel expert workshop. They found the mass airflow sensor resistance readings not quite to spec. So £115 + vat for parts plus £75 + vat labour and the car was fixed. That’s why I have no faith in main dealers, all they are interested in is how to maximise their profits
@rogerledsham8052
@rogerledsham8052 Год назад
Well done, for what you did and for finding out how hopeless the customer information is at a centre that sells supposedly luxury cars. Charges per hour really are a summary of what rip-off Britain is like. I live in the Middle East and, in the industrial area of my city, where the car repair shops are located (thousands of them), hundreds of old Range Rovers are lined up, dumped. They're hugely unreliable and hugely expensive to fix even in a country where labour costa are six to ten pounds an hour. You don't see Toyota Landcruisers there because they're all on the road, being used.
@DrivewayHustlers
@DrivewayHustlers Год назад
I wouldn’t say hopeless , but I was suprised there was no system in place i.e AutoData or something similar to be able to give an estimate on time for a job 🤔 Now that’s interesting , and I’m suprised they haven’t been sold off into other country’s where values are still quite good ! Where are these then ? I’m intrigued 🤔

In fairness to the lady from JRA who took the call, she did say she did not know how long it would take, that it could take 2 hours or 5 hours. She did offer to email someone for a firmer time. I think you you should have taken it up to see. I would expect a minimum of 1 hour, not that it is right, I just think it would be a minimum of 1 hour. Who knows, they may have diagnosed the fault quickly & replaced the compressor in the 1 hour diagnosis time. Maybe you can phone another dealership to see what they would charge, you might get a someone who knows. Please note - I wouldn't go to JRA either, I am happy with myself diagnosing & repairing or an independent Land Rover specialist I use for the bigger items.. Thanks for showing how to rebuild the compressor though, it was very simple. In my Rover, the compressor is under the vehicle, it would take longer to extract it & reinstall it.

@@DrivewayHustlers I have an LR3 TDV6. In Australia we are as much a fan of diesels as other parts of the world (especially the USA) are fans of V8 petrol engine vehicles. I see a mixture of petrol & diesel in the UK, my gut feeling though is that diesel Land Rovers of any type are the more popular. Would that be correct? I would dearly love a Range Rover diesel, both a more modern one as well as an P38!
@DrivewayHustlers
@DrivewayHustlers Год назад
Yes that’s correct , in the UK diesel is probably the preferred choice. But there’s pro’s and cons for either really . With petrol you don’t get the mpg , but then you don’t have to worry about turbo’s etc . It’s all down to personal preference, if your only using it once a week on a sunday, then I’d say Petrol . Daily driver , then go for a diesel

Main dealers always rinse you on parts prices, and labour charges. To be fair regarding how long the job is, she was up front saying she didn't know how long it would take. The only dealership I ever used, was when I had an oldish Merc 190e, they would service the car for less than any local independents could even get close to. They changed ownership a few years ago though, and their prices went through the roof after that. I have a friendly local garage who have looked after all me cars since then, and have been more than honest with me, and even done the odd job for free where it only took a quick intervention.

@@DrivewayHustlers tbh once you get your head round the complexities it's really not that hard, it's just having the right tools. I've saved a shedload buying off eBay. Back in the summer I bought a set of 3wiper blades I priced them up at wilco motosave where I always go and they quoted me £50 but didn't have them in stock so I went to dealership and they quoted me £70 FFS. I eventually got a set of genuine Lucas blades for £19 off eBay. I genuinely think when they see you have a range rover you can see the £££ signs in their eyes, it's like they think of a number then times it by it's square root. Forgot to mention my vougues a 4.4 petrol/LPG so cheap as chips to run at 0.75pp litre.

LOL, nothing has changed through the years-- even in different countries! Back in the early/mid '90s (roughly 30 years ago), I had an OLD Mercury Grand Marquis land-barge that I thought the starter crapped out on. Called a local Ford dealer and they wanted 3 hours' labor to replace the thing (at $90.00 per hour), and $300.00 for a new starter. Refurbished starters were $45.00 at Autozone! The starter has-- COUNT THEM!-- TWO bolts holding it on the engine. I told them if they had a technician who took THREE hours to change a freakin' starter, they needed to fire him. Luckily/unluckily, a friend of mine determined it wasn't the starter, it was the ring gear missing some teeth as the problem. I eventually changed that myself (and a freeze plug that was hidden beneath a cross-member). Three grueling days with minimal help, and about $110.00 in parts, I had that gas-guzzling beast back on the road. I have NO IDEA if the dealership would have found the actual problem right away...

@@DrivewayHustlers The reduced labour charge is quite common across brands. Porsche and BMW for example offer it alongside discounted parts. They do it to keep their ramps in use for longer and compete with the specialist networks, giving owners without the deeper pockets of the first couple of owners a choice where to go. And with some cars, having a service book with only dealer stamps does attract some buyers.

Before I gave hope and handed over the money the car being of significant sentimental value it was going to get fixed by myself or Ford , thanks to the power of the internet I found that with a £12 cable from eBay some free software and a 2nd hand BCM I could pull my old BCM config and write it to the new one took all of 5 minutes even though my local Ford garage claimed it was a good couple of hours work. This reinforces what I’ve been saying for years, dealers need to employ technical people or ex techs for the front desk roll. Otherwise you get good people regurgitating information they think is correct that end up making the entire system look bad from the start. Labour is discounted for older cars and this is quite common with main dealers. This is to try and retain customers once the vehicle is outside of the warranty period as you're trying to compete with independants. I wouldn't rebuild the compressor. Never had any success rebuilding air value blocks on my D3 and in the end, after wasting money and more importantly time on (recommended) seal kits from a well know market place, replacing the valve blocks was the was forward. Cost wise you need to consider overheads. I was invited to a new LR service building (a few years back). £4m for the building + £850k for the fitout (tool bays / 2 and 4 posters etc). Dealer did the MOT on my 15year D3 V8...... and the spark plugs. (For £99 labour charge / 1hr it was a bargain and they could struggle removing them (8no) and washing the car afterwards). The charge was book rate.

@brianwhittington5086 Год назад
It may sound like a rip off, but vehicles today are very complex, working on a Can Bus system of easily damamaged, shared computor electronics. The main dealer prices reflect the original value and quality status of the marque. They want to do diagnostic checks first to determine there's no other potential fault at the root of the failure. A slow or intermittent pressure leak from a pipe, seal, or air suspension bag will cause the compressor to run constantly, or far more often than needed, leading to another premature failure. Having worked for main dealers, customer's dont realise there's far more to it than just grabbing a few tools and fitting a part. The parts and job will have to make it back to as factory new specification, with a full original manufacturer and dealer parts and labour warranty to match. The job time will account for every minute of the technician's time, such as getting the vehicle from a storage car park to the workbay, fit the car with a full service protection kit, and complete any pre and post repair checks, a necessary road test, safety and fit for purpose tests after the job completion etc. You have to avoid any potential for legal claims as you're essentially working to the same standard as when making a brand new vehicle. If it was a £2k, or £150k worth of a customer's vehicle, you still need to take the same precaution against any scratches, trim, or other damage. Add to this the sequence of safely disabling all the complex electronics and other systems, to avoid personal injury and expensive vehicle damage, you soon realise where the labour time adds up.

Yep, I’ve had the same experience with Toyota, for my Land Cruiser. Luckily I’ve found a small independent garage that specialises only in Land Cruisers and they’ve saved me a fortune. Interestingly though, I also own a Range Rover L322 (2002 year) in Latvia, and I have to use JLR as there are no independents that know anything about Range Rovers. They’re also not cheap but nowhere near as bad as in Rip Off Britain, for example they’d got me a reconditioned gearbox instead of making me have a new one, and they always say if I can get parts cheaper on eBay etc in UK they have no problem to fit it for me. Imagine your local dealership agreeing to that, let alone suggesting it! I’m considering buying an L322 here in the UK but I made sure there was a reputable local independent Land Rover specialist first (ex Land Rover mechanics.)

@@DrivewayHustlers I bought my 2002 year L322 in Latvia in 2012 (it’s one of the earlier L322’s with the 3.0 BMW engine.) It had 230,000 km on the clock (about 144,000 miles.) I bought it from a dealer in Latvia who imports cars from elsewhere in Europe. I paid 13,000 Euros for it (about £11,400 at the time.) Mine was imported from France, so all the digital messages are in French. I don’t think second hand cars are cheaper in Latvia, that’s how the importer makes his money, but being a small country there isn’t such a wide selection of used cars as in the UK especially if you’re after a specific model. One of the problems in getting new parts is that they come to Latvia via a distribution centre in Finland which makes them even more expensive, so it’s good that they are flexible about sourcing reconditioned parts or parts I find on EBay etc. I think because I am a bit of a one-off (a Brit with a Range Rover in Latvia) cases like mine don’t come up often enough for them to check the rule book, and maybe because I’m a familiar face (yes Ive had a lot of work done there.)

But, who’d go to a main dealer for that fix in an old car? Incidentally and I'm guessing I was one ofvthe few that did so, I always asked for a discount! @@DrivewayHustlers Thanks for the reply, and your right there are still few Genesis cars on the road in the UK, and of those only a small number are the Electrified G80. As such it invariably attracts a lot of attention, most think my model is some kind d of Bentley given the badge design, grille, and its overall shape and size. Also the fact that head of design at Genesis- Luc Donkerwolke used to be chief of design at Bentley motors there are some clear design influences. Finally after explaining its a Genesis, most ask what it costs, the usual range being between 150 and 200k!! Needless to say its considerably cheaper, my car which is almost fully specced came in at 77,500 which is well over ten grand less than its closest competitor the Mercedes EQE. As I said prior to the E G80 I had a Maserati Ghibli, an excellent car which I owned for seven years, previous to that I had several new model Jaguar's over a period of twenty years. Many who ask the same question as yourself are surprised when I say this is the best car I have owned! It's blend of absolute luxury, equipment, and quite sublime driving characteristics make it feel more like a Bentley but at more than half the price. Excellent customer service, and the benefits of the five year warranty and servicing package all add to the value for money, and I can say this all whilst being described as a discerning (read very fussy) customer! When i asked them what parts cost over £1000, they said the master brake cylinder was faulty and needed replaced (£750) and the radiator had a leak (£400)......Oddly enough the brakes were pefect and i never had to top up the radiator before it went in and when i got the car back, it looked like they had just power washed the radiator and the brake pedal slowly went to the floor when you sat at lights or a junction....I complained about it and they said it would settleand stop doing that once the brake pads bedded in....needless to say it never did and not to mention that they allowed it to pass the MOT in this situation! The whole ripoff episode was put in the hands of my solicitor and she sued for loss of use as well finally getting me my £1700 back plus another £500 for loss of use. The garage is not being asked to do a diagnosis, they are not being asked to to do anything but supply and fit a part. Garages do this all the time for tyres, batteries, brakes etc all under the instruction of the customer. They have no liability but the quality of work on the vehicle. In good conscious they can explain to a customer issues surrounding the work but they are not liable for the imagination of the customer. This sounds to me like the garage time is more profitably spent on a newer car earning more for the hourly rates and parts. And the customer base for old Range Rovers are not likely to want to drop £5k on the list of problems LR can diagnose on inspection and so ultimately isn't good business if they drive away looking for a cheaper option. She was very happy to supply the part and take the garage time out of the equation.
