*RANGO* is Truly Underrated! FIRST Time Watching (Movie Commentary & Reaction)

Love the villain in this movie Rattlesnake Jake the way he was designed, animated, and voiced is so well done.

Tbh, I think Rattlesnake Jake was right in calling Rango out. Rango saw his life as a movie and wrapped himself into a nearly impossible situation. And he also handled some situations pretty idiotically and let himself lie to dozens of people who were struggling so that he could keep their admiration and respect. He saw himself as a hero but wasn't truly awake to the reality of the whole scenario. The line that the Spirit of the West says to him hits the nail on the head. "It's not about you. It's about them." Jake is intimidating and harsh as heck, but he doesn't stand for lies or fake deals. By the end, we see he had the moral/understanding to respect Rango and accept that they both won in some way (by getting rid of the mayor). Jake peacefully left after that, admitting Rango is a fellow legend and going about his way. He's an incredible Antagonist

The reason the mayor needs beans land so much is because it contains the giant pipe that they would mainly pour water out* from, the entire plan is useless without the main source: water

A very interesting thing about Rango. Often in stories, characters try to be who they should be, but they can't and through overcoming they become them. Rango is nobody. And throughout history, he not only lies, but also commits acts. When Jake comes to the Dirt, Rango is a person. But he can't stop believing that all this was an illusion, even though it has already become a reality. The residents of the city believe in the real him more than he does. That's why the Spirit of the West says: it's not about you, it's about them. Rango is a nobody who has become what people dear to him saw in him. And he had to believe in the illusion he had created for them to become real.

When I was younger, I used to not like this movie. I think mainly cuz I wasn't used to this type of animation. Now I love it! The animation, the dialogue, the music, the character designs. It's incredible.

And I didn’t realize that Rango was voiced by Johnny Depp until I looked up the cast recently!! He sounds totally different from his Jack Sparrow persona 😂

Johnny Depp voiced Rango and Bill Nighy voiced Jake. The _Pirates of the Caribbean_ vibes are pretty unavoidable. Also, this won the Oscar for best animated picture, so it clearly accomplished what it set out to do.

Rattlesnake Jake is just an amazing villain. Pretty sure one of the major reasons it's underrated is *because* nobody could really figure out who it was meant for, when it was released. It's actually meant for young adults, but many people thought it was a kid's movie (advertising, the talking animals, or just people not being used to mature animated movies, yet) and most kids didn't really enjoy it for one reason or another (thinking the animals are creepy, ect). If this movie released today as PG-13, I'm sure it would have done *much* better in the box office.

Just because it is animated doesn’t mean it is a kids movie. If a kid watched this, they would be either terrified, traumatised or don’t understand what’s going on whatsoever XD

Rattlesnake Jake is one of my favorite villains, as he is incredibly intimidating but also has morals. He’s in the right calling Rango out as a fraud.

Really felt like this movie used philosophy and comedy so well, and the behind the scenes of the cast acting out the movie is priceless!

I am actually really happy with how this movie turned out, and by Nickelodeon's thumbs up at that. and considering what was out at the time with movies in 2001 like Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Rio, this striking character designs and world was VASTLY different for the time. i mean, heck, the only movie at the time i think was on par with The Adventures of Tintin and that movies was trying to make a 2D series of comics and shows look more realistic. this is up there with one of my favorite movies of all time because of Rango himself, the story of finding yourself and the style.

Growing up Rango was one of those road trip movies I find myself packing for vacations times. A lot of stuff event over my head, but I just liked it because it was ridiculous and fun.

I just notice there was a grave that said Hold My Beer… 😂😂😂😂

Oh my- This movie is literally my childhood and watching it again is just so good! I used to watch this over and over again as a kid and, to be honest, I found it somehow awkward but at the same time I felt like I HAD to watch it because it's simply a masterpiece.

Rango being chased through the town by the bird is totally an homage to the Chase scene in Raising Arizona, an amazing movie if you never seen it.

Actually the bullet hitting the glass and cracking would happen (I remember reading about it years ago), Beans is a specific type of lizard that freezes when in danger to blend with the desert sand (that's why they say her switch is broken), and the city shown is Las Vegas I believe - humans built it and the mayor is simply building his own smaller version because he saw it made the humans more profit. Okay done bein nit picky lol fun fact! The movie was animated like a 2D film rather than a 3D one. All the models may be 3D, but their animated on a 2D plane 🙂

Jake was a nickname for snake, parents in the country ( the south) would tell kids when playing in the woods or any place snakes lived. There was also a professional wrestler named Jake the Snake Roberts

The snake is named Jake because its a reference to an old school wrestler named Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

Fun fact: this movie was made with enhanced method acting. Essentially the VAs filmed the entire movie as themselves, and based the animation on their movements and facial expressions. They did the same thing in fantastic Mr fox.

I'm pretty sure the reason the glass broke with that bullet is pressure, with a lot of pressure you can break glasses really easily

Alright, if you’re looking for underrated gems, check out the 2008 “Speed Racer” movie next. The only reason it didn’t do better was because it had to compete with Iron Man on release.

Chances are very good someone else already commented this; but one thing that makes me like this movie even more than I already do is knowing how it was made. A lot of animated movies have the movie be animated and the actors speak "over" the characters, but for Rango the actors actually acted out the movie and their characters were animated after their actors. I really recommend looking up the Rango Behind The Scenes on RU-vid; it's very interesting to watch!

the mayor wanted to have all the lands so he can build a new town, he took all the water so he can pay his workers on building that advanced town plus force people to sell their land. and I don't think the law of physic at the end is not real, it was probably exaggerated a bit but consider the water pressure and bad glass, that can happen

This movie is a absolute masterpiece the animation the art style the whole music God I love the music not to mention the whole entire plot of how it’s gone from a little Chamaeleon wanting to figure out who is he and where he belongs And Then a whole western plot mixed with that I absolutely love it and plus I’m also a fan of Western so that just hooked me right in

they marketed it at kids... but I think the true audience are spaghetti western lovers and secondary to that.. movie lovers. I have watched a fair bunch of movies and this had so many throw-backs, call-outs and is probably more akin to Blazing Saddles and or 80's lampoon movies than it does with a kids movie. They were probably forced to make it pg instead of pg-13.. which is where I believe it would have shined even brighter.

The bird with the silver beak is a reference to Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou. One of his two characters - which he won an Oscar for - had a silver nose.

You definitely should at least watch Sergio Leno’s Dollars trilogy. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good The Bad and The Ugly. They star Clint Eastwood as The Man with No Name who Rango met. You should also check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Not a western but still good, and hilarious. Two guys in vegas going crazy on drugs. They actually had a cameo in this movie driving on the road. The main guy is played by Johnny Depp

Oh, I love this movie. Just came from your HTTYD two reaction, and figured I should mention something. When you were saying how Drago is crazy, the answer is simply that he isnt really. Hes just vengeful. I heard somewhere that he lost his whole village and his arm during a dragon attack. Of course he wasnt gonna see Hiccups reasoning. A man who lost everything to dragons will never seek peace with them. Im not trying to offend you or anything, I loved the reaction. Hes just my favorite villain and he gets misunderstood and labeled “generic power hungry villain” way too much. Looking forward to watching this video. I watched this for the first time last night and it's definitely a new favourite, so beautiful both visually and story wise, and absolutely was ahead of its time for a 2011 animated kids movie. The lighting and shadow effects and character design left me bald. The cast killed it. And "Go to hell!" "where do you think I'm from?" Is the best villain comeback I've ever heard in my life.

Gotta say that I agree with your thoughts on the movie. I see the same flaws and I enjoy it for the same reasons you did. Honestly this is one of my favorite Johnny Depp roles but yeah I see why its underrated. Also fun fact, the name "Jake the Snake" is a reference to former WWE wrestler Jake "The Snake" Roberts who would enter the ring with a live snake

It's a very interesting and mythic film, and I love the way the human technology becomes otherworldly and divine to the animals.

It's definitely not a children's movie. Too many inappropriate lines and too many metaphors and deep meanings. Mainly made for adults but at the time, adults used to think animated movies were for kids and that's why it's so underrated and not known.

I think the people who made the movie knew exactly who they were targeting. I believe that it was intended for kids but had adult jokes so that parents could enjoy it as well. Many films do this. And kids aren't that dumb, I watched this as a kid and still understood some of the jokes. Not saying you said that they are dumb, just saying that kids are just as smart sometimes

I think even kids now know what exactly what *quid pro quo* means now, that and *quarantine*

Rango is an old kids movie... and by that i mean, its like old kids movies, back in the 80's and early 90's. But also with a decent amount for the adults... its why its so good.
