Judging by the end, Jake was only so condescending in his first scene because he despises liars and frauds, because he has a sense of honor. And for that, I love him.
One thing I liked about Jake is he’s genuinely angry that Rango lied to the people. He’s a cruel man, but a cruel man with principles Edit: Okay, to all the smooth brained Neanderthals in the replies saying JaKe iSn’T a MaN, hE’S a SnAKe. I KNOW HES A SNAKE. The characters in this flick are so three dimensional and fleshed out they feel very human. *STOP BEING SO GODDAM LITERAL*
Honestly professionals and actual legends don't take anyone seriously if they ain't got the nerve to prove it. Reputations mean alot of things plus honor and respect in those wild west days.
To be honest I think he was just playing to Rango's insecurities. If anything was going to get to him at the time it'd be the fear that he truly was nobody.
Fun fact! Those scales exist on real snakes, and are also the reason why they technically smell things with their tongues in order to find prey. The tongue rubs against the ground and picks up scent molecules in the air, it rubs the forked tip against those spots in order to get a better reading on where the scent came from in the first place, and wether the origin point is worth eating or not.
My only complaint is that he has eyelids and blinks. I get needing eyelids for expression's sake, but I think it would've been an extra cool detail if you never saw his eyes close
5:52 I like that he doesn't just magically spot the bullet amongst that debris; his attention is drawn to it because the bullet's shell reflects sunlight into his eye.
That's because Rango didn't know he had it in him, either. Up until then he was just playing a role. He was being any body because he was, a he described it, a nobody. It wasn't until he "walk in the desert" that he came back as Rango. The character and the man(or lizard in this context) And when Jake realized that, and saw that he managed to come out on top with one bullet, he has to tip his hat. One legend to another. Rango was a nobody and became a legend by the end of his story. In truth, maybe Rango didn't become a stone cold killer. Maybe he wasn't going to shoot Jake. But, he was not the same guy he threw out of town, and struck Jake deep.
"it only takes 1 bullet" "you ain't got the nerve" *"try me"* Snake Jake are those villains who thinks they've won, until the "coward" gives them the death stare.
@@adnanasghar1087 for as cool and badass as rattlesnakes are in real life, hawks and eagles are just insanely good at killing things smaller than them and constantly clown on snakes. You can't fault the guy for having an instinctual fear of the fuckers.
@@charmingcthulhu6544 he's a rattlesnake with a machine gun as his tail and wears a hat and talks. Also he's so wicked he claims to have come from hell and takes a soul with him every time he appears. Where did the reality come from? He shouldn't have been scared of a hawk really
@@adnanasghar1087 it's called food chain but it has little to no logic however then the townfolks shouldn't be afraid of the hawk and Jake when they have guns... The hawk is the one whose above them all, the top predator
I love how this dude is not even a villain, just someone's who's doing his job while being blunt to everyone, including Rango. Even respecting him at the end. God I love this character Edit: After watching Puss in Boots 2 and the literal character of Death, I can safely say that the trope of antagonists that are neutral to the protagonist, yet still comes off as threatening is probably my favorite trope. No ulterior motive, no world domination, just "Buddy, you fûcked up, and now it's time to own it up or dîe"
This. That's exactly the kind of villains I've loved the most. You never know who's side they're really on, all you better hope is that you CAN'T screw it up or face nightmares by these neutral agents of the unknown, that even "evil individuals" would get tense from.
I thinks is because is in some way more real. Like Oh the super evil villanous devil want to conqueor the world and im the only one who can stop him. My man that the equivelant of being on 1940. And wabted to kill hitler. Even better. What the hell did u did fof hitler wanted u . Yes u dead. From all the people. But a random person that his justndoing hes job. As idk a german soldier or spy. Is more terryfing. Hes doing his work. And tje worst part. Hes good at it
Dude Rango is Underated and these scenes show almost everything great about this movie. The Music, Character Design, Action, Style, Animation, Voice acting, Cinematography Just a Pure Masterpiece.
Really underrated and everything you said is true. I can't stop watching Rango... Best scenes in an animated movie. Plus... Rango and Jake is same characters for Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones... And i love that movies too.
5:19 Wow, that simple expression shows you, Jake knew he'd been outsmarted, Rango had beat him, and hes going to die. Despite the whole, "Reaper from hell" persona, even a badass like Jake can be left filled with absolute terror
I don't know if it was really the fear of death, or just that he knew he had been beaten. He had no cards left. Out of bullets and at gunpoint of the man he openly humiliated in public. He didn't really seem scared so much that he was kinda shocked. This little lizard he threw out as a coward, just came back and completely outplayed him. He didn't beg or even try to defend himself. He didn't attack him when he turned his back and walked willingly to be captured by the mayor just to keep Beans alive. He just seemed humbled by the experience. You can see it on his face. But Jake also seems to have a sense of dignity. When the Mayor betrays him, he faces the man down as he pulls the trigger. Pissed off as all hell itself, but man enough to face down the barrel of the gun and not flinch. He keeps true to his persona, even when beaten. Which is rather refreshing. Considering most villians try to either talk their way out of it. Or are changed by the defeat and are ready to die for their crimes.
I think he’s the best. Throughout the movie the very few times he’s mentioned he strikes fear into the hearts of everyone around, and for damn good reason. Look at what he does to Rango in *two or three minutes of screentime*
@@saucymemes6696 I can't say I agree - not because RSJ isn't a great villain, obviously, but just because the competition for "best villain in animation" is so stiff. The medium of animation belts out some absolutely banger antagonists.
Tyler Allison, he wasn’t a villain but a anti-hero because he got the truth out of Rango and gave him respect because he was able to rise up and be honest to who he is. The mayor was the villain here.
@@tylerdurden6574 agreed, not to mention he asked for Jake to be brought in which means the Mayor had influence on Jake most likely a mutual partnership or money involved but point being I think the mayor had the previous sheriff killed
They recorded actors doing the scenes and then they "translated" their movements into animation. But only visually. No motion sensors or anything like that...
A bandit with morals, honor, and yet, no mercy. A simple and effective design combined with an exceptional voice actor. A legend in his world and ours.
The voice actors and animators in this movie deserve oscars. Jacks movements, subtle yet dark voice, heck they even nailed the twisted villain mustache. Got damn!
You can see that Jake’s respect for Rango wasn’t at the point where he saved his life but at the point where he almost killed him. He tried to call him out on a bluff but then realised that Rango had set him up. He realised that he planned to make it seem like there’s a hawk capitalising on his fear of hawks (understandable as a snake) and he also planned that he would quickly figure out it’s not a real hawk but bats capitalising on both his sharp wit and his anger at being made a fool of to waste all his bullets. You may notice that he would still have the upper hand as he wasn’t going to shoot Beans earlier but strangle her to death with his coils. Plus he’s a rattlesnake so his venom must be potent. He could’ve easily overpowered Rango at that point who only had a weak body and a gun with only one bullet. The first time he didn’t do this because he knew he didn’t have the nerve but this time he knows he’s met a worthy opponent and seems to have accepted his fate. Noticeably when Tortoise John threatens Rango to back down, he doesn’t even look angry but wowed. Despite him being very uncaring and having little to no empathy whatsoever, you could also argue that he respects Rango’s decision to not kill him to save Beans. Going more into his standards which thus far include his respect for worthy opponents and hatred of liars, he also seems to dislike traitors (although it might just be because he was on the receiving end) as he seemed far angrier at the betrayal than he ever was with Rango. Jake could’ve easily just killed John right there in front of the town and then taken over himself but he doesn’t because he recognises that Rango is the badass the town has and he’ll do a great job running it. So he shows his respect and bids him well while taking John away so he can kill him elsewhere.
@@isdrakon9802 Compared to most chameleons a diamondback rattlesnake IS a monolithic being. While some of the creatures are a tad small for what they are, they really did do an amazing job in this movie. A shame its not more widely known. Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy are an incredible duo. No matter the movie they are in.
What's crazier is that my uncle's common pet snake would destroy Jake. California King Snakes are immune to rattlesnake venom, and often eat them. Your average house snake could easily kill one of the best snakes in fiction.
Ironically drinking his venom probably wouldn't have hurt Rango at all unless he had some stomach ulcers. But the intimidation factor probably would stop most folks from even trying
@@artsiefan3385 I've got you, random stranger. Most venoms generally aren't toxic unless exposed to the bloodstream and tissues where they do all their damage. Dissolving them namely. So if you had an ulcer, you'd be in for some trouble.
@@a.w.r3311 As a follow up, there are some venoms that are acidic enough to burn holes through contact but most are only dangerous if they reach the bloodstream. Some cultures even deliberately ingest venom since they tend to be full of protein.
@@a.w.r3311 So someone with ulcerative colitis wouldn't be able to drink venom? Or would the process of it previously being in the stomach change that somehow?
Jake and Death are the two best animated antagonists ever. Not only are the both of them extremely intimidating, menacing and badass, but both aren’t really villains as they’re forces of nature to be reckoned with, they hate the arrogance of the main hero, and they eventually gain their respect to the hero.
@@McCringleberry02 Pretty sure Jake being the Grim Reaper is more allegorical than factual to hone in on how legendary and sinister he is. Dude’s just a badass mercenary as far as I’m aware, nothing supernatural is involved. Though, it’s been a while since I’ve actually seen the movie so feel free to correct me on anything I got wrong.
I really do love how Jake dumped all of Rango’s bullets except one, and that single bullet did really end up being all Rango needed from then on. It’s even better that Jake realizes it and that’s what makes him consider Rango a legend rather than him finding the nerve to kill or bringing water back to the town. This movie was too good to just be a Nickelodeon movie.
I like how despite Rattlesnake Jake being an infamous gunslinger and the most feared man in the Mojave desert, he's still afraid of something, that something being the Hawk.
It's because hawk very often hunting rattlesnakes. That's why he was scared of him. It was his instinct for surviving. Plus he can have some bad history with him (his missing part of the tail)
Damn, the amount of detail is insane, when jake gets checked by gunpoint, he is filled with terror and kept his eyes trained on that revolver until it was uncocked and holstered. This Movie Rocks
@@ShigekiHizashi In the German version they actually swore for real. They said things like "Halt die Fresse" which would normally never be said in a movie for kids.
I absolutely love the idea they implemented when Jake rattles his tail as he should as a rattlesnake, the sounds are gun rattling. It mixes the rattlesnake and sharpshooter motifs so well.
Honestly one of the coolest villain aesthetics & personalities I've ever seen and to this day this is still one of my favorite movies & villain. I especially love the short but powerful character arc Rattlesnake Jake has on his perspective of Rango
I like that Jake plays the role as an honorable OG outlaw, who was simply enraged that someone was bringing shame to the act, he makes play and stage references and even makes oneliners on que, i like this guy, clearly an A++ in drama and nothing else
Jake and death are two great villains that aren't true villains, they hate that the main character is just so smug and once the main characters develop to be more humble they let them live there life
something i love about Jake is the fact his anger is kinda justified, Rango had been basically sullying his name and reputation claiming their brothers to a gunslinger like Jake that's the ultimate insult, using his name and reputation to basically boost his own reputation is dishonorable, its why i love how they part ways, Rango honored his promise in ending this all with one bullet saving both the town from jake, and Jake from the Mayor Rango never had to do that, he could have shot jake but instead he chose the girl, which is honorable and as cold and cruel as Jake is, he respects honor
"Or by all the fires in the black pit, I'll squeeze them pretty brown eyes outta yer skull!" Probably one of his more underrated lines. Jake was a legendary kind of evil.
@@ghostoftheoldworld5104 What I Meant Was That I Think That Jake Did It Better, Death Is Fantastic Don’t Get Me Wrong But Jake Also showed a lot more personality and with him only being a metaphor he also showed the other side of the coin when Rango was able to overcome him, something Death wasn’t able to do
@@highhat3561 oh i see haha, i agree i like Jake more, too. i just meant that since Jake came first and introduced this type of character Death did better in his movie than he otherwise would have
He was my favorite part of the movie love him and his desig. He’s so intimidating and just fun to look at The way he moves and the way his gun tail moves is amazing
Rattlesnake Jake reminds me a lot of Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. A truly menacing villain in a mostly lighthearted setting that is as cruel as he is formidable but is shown to have his own set of principles and twisted sense of honor.
Same here. But I can't say Death matches him at his personality. Death was cruel, but he only did it because Puss angered him. In general I think Death is a nice guy who feels pitty for those who he takes with him. I don't think Jake can match that. But yeah, Jake does remind me a lot of Death.
A fantastic detail Ive noticed is that at 5:11 Jake stutters in absolute shock. For once, the gun has been pulled on *him.* By none other than the wimp he previously scared out of town. This wasn’t enough to scare him, of course, though the “try me” definitely was.
Anyone else notice that Jake didn’t smile or smirk when Rango was interrupted/? Usually these devilish villain types are smug about their backup protecting them, but Jake is a man of honor and respect. Rango earned his respect with that stare down.
I love that Jake did not just stand on the trap, he saw it and tried to escape instead of just "oh well, time to wait for it instead of try to get away."
dude, when he says "what was that you said, pretty soon no one will believe you even existed" that's when I REALLY realized this guy was the same actor who voiced davy Jones because bill Nighy tends to add an A to the end of his sentences, for example, existed, judgement, souls - existeda, judgementa, soulsa, makes it extremely easy to know it's him, personally I think its fitting, for the best villain of 2 movies, one of which was an entire franchise, to be voiced by the same person, davy jones was THE BEST villain of the entire POTC franchise, and Rattlesnake Jake is THE BEST villain in Rango, so its very fitting. (if your wondering where he says judgementa, go look at the scene where davy jones says "you will not forestall my judgement" to bootstrap bill in the final fight of the third POTC movie or when he says "I keep the boy, 99 souls" to jack sparrow in the second movie)
Man I loved this guys character so much especially the voice actor perfect choice for him such a cool cocky guy. “Or what little man you’re gonna kill me?” Best quote 😭
This is just another pirates of the Caribbean movie. Rango has the same actor as jack sparrow (Jonny depp) and reattlesnake jake has the same actor as Davy Jones (bill nighy)
