I liked the comment ocean beyond the well very much no better way to highlight my limited knowledge on music( blame goes to youtube for allowing uninitiated ones like me to post such comments). Interestingly, my fondness in ghazals started by listening to Ghulam Ali(probably the best exponent of Barkat Ali Khan Saab's style of ghazal singing) and Classical with Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty both of them are incidentally related to Patiala Gharana and they remain still among by favorite singers.
I also like Ustd Amanat Ali Khan a lot, however I have always found their treatment of Ghazal(and in case of Punditji) is different than a khayal. Somehow, Ustad Raza Ali Khan's case I felt the treatment is not suitable for ghazal(as you have mentioned I might be conditioned to same octave singing of Mehdi Hassan, well sometimes the well is so enriched one does not wish to sea the ocean). I would say there are 2 school of thoughts about ghazal singing I belong to the different one than yours :-)
I don't think my comment is vague, you might say this is subjective. I admire Ustad Raza Ali Khan and his gharana (which has produced many great Ghazal singers other than being one of the most prominent of Hindustani gharanas). However many avid listeners of Mehdi Hassan will find this rendition too classical. It's another matter some may like it too. But to me ghazal rendition involves balance between the music and poetry, here it is like hearing a khayal.
