Didn't realize Arteta never won a single cap for Spain. Speaks volumes for Spain's midfield depth at the time. I think you got the top 5 spot on. You didn't mention how Guardiola's playing career was limited by a litany of injuries. I suspect he'd have won 100 caps for Spain had he been more durable.

There was talk at one point that England were going to try and get Arteta to play for them but he wasn't allowed to back then due to some youth caps. I am sure the rule was changed for Tim Cahill so he could play for Australia as he had played for Samoa youth when he was 14 I think. Now you can switch nations if you've only played in a friendly(or friendlies) like Declan Rice and Wilfred Zaha did.

It's still surreal to me that he took a paycheck cut to join us, captained for us and then subsequently retired with us and now manage our team. His connection to Arsene Wenger is at the very heart of all of this, and i am just delighted to see it all happening beautifully right now.

Not all great players become great managers much like a lot of players with average playing careers have been among the most successful in the game indeed the likes Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp etc didn't have substantial playing careers but have had huge success as managers a notable exception is Pep Guardiola who also had major success as a player same with Johan Cruyff but in general most of the very top managers didn't have notably outstanding playing careers
@Eibarwoman
@Eibarwoman Год назад
Also Guardiola was fairly injury prone and not particularly athletic for a great player which if the player goes into management and can communicate it well enough tends to work very well (see his coaching contemporary Jurgen Klopp who is probably even a greater example of extreme mental attributes making for a player punching above the technical and athletic traits)

An interesing one would be "greatest playing career plus greatest career in management'. The obvious winner is Cruyff, but Ancelotti, Zidane and Guardiola are up there. But for injury Brian Clough might have been too. Or 'greatest players who failed the most as managers'. One of them is mentioned in this video, I would say.
