Ranking ALL Dragon Age Companions

In 2021, I played through all 3 Dragon Age games. Starting in January and ending in May.
I recorded this video RIGHT after I finished the Trespasser DLC. This is highlighted from my stream, which is why in some moments I take time to interact with chat comments. Also explains why some of my thoughts are a bit jumbled in some parts.
Bioware is, of course, known for creating extremely compelling, unique characters with great dialogue and interesting backgrounds. I can confidently say that there is not a single companion that I did not enjoy in at least some aspect. Which is why I felt I needed to make my own tier ranking.
A few things of note:
- I only rated the MAIN party companions for Origins, DA2, and Inquisition. I did not bother diving into the DLC characters as I didn't explore much of the DLCs.
- These characters are rated based on my own experience of companionship, and which characters resonated the most with me. It is fine if you disagree or have completely different favorites. That is why we have lists like these.
- You cannot argue with me that Varric is not the best. That goes without question.

Great list. I also watched the list from Big Dan (I love big Dan), but he really shocked me when he put Fenris in B tier, between putting the Dog in A tier and Isabella in S tier. It was messed up :( Fenris is one of the most interesting characters in Dragon Age. You dont have to 'like' him to appreciate that. Through Fenris we learn SO MUCH lore! He teaches us about slavery in Thedas, and about Tevinter and mages in general. Yes, he's violent and frightened and talks about his feelings, which are messed up (rightly so). But the fact that he grated on me, and hated on mages, made him really fascinating. His arguments with Anders were outstanding! And Fenris continues to influence the story (hunting slavers in the comics). I also liked Wynne. She was my grandma too! Anyway! Loved this video. New Sub from me :D

Wynne is the best companion out of all 3 games period. And is a game changer as she started the whole healing mage thing everyone now lives by!

But I love Solas so much I really felt like he admired me as a friend yes he betrayed the world but even playing a human character is so respectful and kind. And if you romance him as a female elf it shows how much he cared about you in the ending of the dlc. Which means he never wanted to betray you he just felt he had is own destiny to fulfill.

Cole is my baby boy, and I adore him with every fiber of my being! Definitely play again and have him embrace his human side, he's adorable. And if you did the Alexius quest to ally with the mages, go with the templars in another run; you meet Cole in that quest and get him as a companion earlier.

Solas is one of my favorite characters. The fact that we hate him because we get hurt because of him and not because he's a boring or annoying character proves how much of a great writing he has. Solas is what made this game great

Having listened to what you like/dislike you REALLY need to replay inquisition with a Solas romance. He'll only romance a female elf and it adds so much to the main story, Trespasser, the Elves, and his character. There isn't really a romance like it in any of the DA games. Use the British female voice actor as well. It's heartbreaking lol. Blackwall is a low key good one too.

TBH that kind of makes him a little worse imo, that he only considers you a worthy romantic companion if you're the same race as him. Regardless of how you treat elves in the game.

Fenris totally has no idea how POWERFUL he is. Thinking the lyrium is POISON and Fenris has all of it all in body, I totally understand why he's always angsty and brood. See the others who touches lyrium such as Meridith and Red Templays ALL went mad killing others. Fenris is the only elf who will say Solus is a hypocrite who doom everyone in Dragon Age 4. PS: I suggest Miss Magitek to read the comic "The Black Fortress" and "The Blue Wraith" , this 2 comics are about Fenris.

I have just gone back to dragon age and started origins again…the moment I hear Alistair arguing with the mage at the beginning I remember how good he is!!! I love his banter

Oh my Maker I forgot just how many blighted companions you can have. Though I will gladly point out you missed 2 of them from Origins. If you got captured with Alistair you can sneak out as a guard in a patrol. You meet two guards who are preparing for patrol and help you along. They were more alive than the random two men who come to help you climb up the Tower of Ishal, so I think they deserve to be on the list. I do approve of Barkspawn and Dog having separate portraits, but I also think Barkspawn should be split in two as well. Barkspawn from the human noble background and Barkspawn from saving the Mabari quest. Also, there are two different Anders. Awakening Anders and DA2 Anders (with Justice/Vengeance).

Wanted to watch your playthroughs from the beginning but I can't find them anywhere, the earliest vod I can find for origins is at the end of the game before you talk to riordan on your twitch. Do you have an archive anywhere?

If I can make a suggestion if you ever play dragon age origins again, might I suggest sparing loghain, if only to hear his side of the story. Because if you do, and actually keep an open mind you'll see how much of an interesting and multifaceted character he is.

Cole - there isnt a wrong choice as regards Spirit vs Human. Spirit - hes more content and does more good but its at the expense of erasing the original human Cole which is sad.

Sera as A tier? Really? I mean, personal opinion being what it is I get that some people like different things but Sera? She's awful. She's immature, selfish, manipulative and rude. She claims to care about the common people but her actions constantly prove otherwise. She only really cares about sticking it to nobles and if any of the commoners get killed along the way, oh well. Too bad so sad. At least the noble got what was coming to them. She threatens the Inquisitor on multiple occasions and openly flouts your authority. And if you romance her as an elf she's the the most toxic, abusive partner ever.

I had the same problem with Sera. No idea what she was saying half of the time. Atleast Cole has the excuse of being a spirit so him having communication issues makes sense.
