A quarter of a century has passed since we lost Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. To mark the 25 years that have passed, Glenn Freeman, Kevin Turner and Ben Anderson debate which of Senna's F1 cars were the best (and worst!) to come up with a definitive ranking of all 12 cars that he raced during his career. Do you agree with the list? Let us know!

The MP4/6 deserves more credit as the last all-manual shift championship winner against a tech marvel Williams.
@K20EF8
@K20EF8 4 года назад
@Jennifer Maple Last manual trans AND last V12 to win a championship and IMO along with the 412T1/2 the best sounding engine of all time. Berger did win a race. The car had stiff competition in the FW14 which later became the FW15C, probably the most technologically advanced car in racing ever vs its competition. The MP4/6, V12, manual trans, incredible sound and driven to dominance by Senna. It I could drive any car in motorsport history it would be #1

@MegaherzZwei
@MegaherzZwei 5 лет назад
In Adrian Newey's book he basically admits that they were totally aware that the FW16 was completely aerodynamically unstable before the race at Imola. The side pods were too long and ultimately caused the flow to and through the diffuser to stall thereby causing it to lose all down force at the rear. He also admitted to being the designer that told the techs to turn down the diameter of the steering shaft so that an FIA inspection template could still pass through after Senna requested they move the steering away from the dash slightly. They did that without any FEA or knowing how much the steering shaft had been weakened. So yeah, a total failure and belongs at the bottom of the list for sure!

@@ZoidPickle I agree that the car was unstable because it was designed to have active suspension. My point was simply that Williams were aware of it before anyone crashed. Williams tested at Circuit de Nogaro with Hill driving and he said that it was so unstable he could barely see because the car was bouncing around so badly. Just my opinion, but if it was so bad that it was that dangerous, Williams should have pulled the cars until the problem was fixed. Newey was able to make the car better later on by redesigning and fitting shorter side pods.

Donington 1993: The impressive 4 things about that lap were: 1. The effortlessness with which he did it. He didn’t “barely” scrape through each pass. The car moved effortlessly as if in another dimension. It’s as if the other cars weren’t on the same track. 2. He did it in a car considered between the third and fourth best on the grid that season. 3. He passed people who would go on to win a combined 12 F1 world championships. 4. He did it in a single lap. Then again we are talking about someone who won Monaco 6 times. With 5 wins consecutively. Like when Webber said he felt proud to be up there with Senna after he won the Monaco GP, and someone said he’d have to win the next five runnings consecutively just to match him. It really is accurate to say that Ayrton Senna essentially has no equal. And the above has nothing to do with his dying young. He really WAS that good.

Speaking of consecetive Monaco wins, Rosberg got three on the bounce. Yes, the latter of his three wins was because Mercedes completely messed up Hamilton's strategy, but then again, Mansell had Senna beaten in 1987 until his turbo failed, and his 1993 win was very lucky due to Prost's drive throughs and Schumacher's retirement. Also, we must remember Senna could have very easily had 6 consecuetive Monaco victories if he hadn't had made the error at Portier. I'm not saying Senna was bad in Monaco, he was very good, but he wasn't unbeatable for sure.

The MP4/6 was not beaten by Williams due to their unreliability in the first 4 races. That is an incorrect statement. Senna put that car on pole for the first 4 races and it was the most dominant start in F1 history. OK, Senna did go beyond the limit of the car at times and took it to a finish in Brazil that it should not have made being stuck in 6th gear, and the Williams caught up and surpassed it mid season, but Honda kept pushing with the new engine for Hungary for example, and it was the last mighty V12 / manual combo to win a championship. Towards the end, by Suzuka, it had probably gone beyond the Williams car . Oh, and it sounded glorious - I know, I heard it at the Silverstone GP 1991!

@@saltbjorn there was something about the combination of Senna's distinctive yellow helmet combined with the equally iconic black and gold JPS Lotuses that he drove in 1985 and 1986. Particularly the 1985 Lotus 97T, he achieved his breakthrough victory at Estoril in crushing style, pole, fastest lap, race win by over a minute. It was also his first pole position and first win, if Monaco 1984 showed what he could do, Estoril 1985 showed what could do with race winning machinery. Another factor, the man himself felt it was a better performance by him personally than Donnington 1993. The Lotus had none of the technical wizardry of the MP4-8, a manual gearbox, less downforce, significantly more power in the Renault V6 twin turbo than the normally aspirated Ford V8 in the McLaren that year and a harder to manage power delivery with the Renault V6 twin turbo as the Lotus didn't have traction control, launch control or active suspension at the time

The FW16 isn’t “the car” that killed Senna. Ultimately, it was a modification to the car, not the design of the car itself, that was responsible for his accident. Coulthard, Hill, and Mansell came back to take the WCC for Williams in the same car.

A bit unfair to compare F1 in the 80s to today. Expecting modern drivers to win by a lap today is ridiculous. The 80s had teams like Life F1 and much more cars than today. The gap between teams was far greater too, something a lot of people would say is an improvement. You really want drivers winning by a lap? If we are going to judge drivers based on that Fangio far outranks Senna given races were won by minutes in those days. You are expecting drivers today to do things totally unrealistic. You think someone would actually drive on a wet track on slicks? No aids are going to overcome the sheer lack of grip. And even then, Hamilton has done something similar in Spa 08, where he stayed on drys in rainy conditions and won. He won by a lap at silverstone in 08, a year where TC was banned. Senna had driver aids at Donnington, so by your own logic Senna loses out. Has he had the best car most of his career? Yes. Did Fangio? Yes. But think you should ask why he is in those cars in the first place. Not even Senna won a championship without having the best car. I think Steven Nichols is right, some of you ignore stats or facts that dampen his performances because he died young in a racing car. Prost won more titles and won the 88 championship if normal rules applied. But you willingly ignore those facts because it damages your bias.

Poor analysis of theWilliams, for as flawed as it was. If it wasn’t for Benetton cheating and having an all time great driver in Schumacher - Senna would have had 3 poles and won every race in that car. Senna lapped the entire field (bar Schumacher) in the one Gp he did, Brazil, before spinning out

Why insist on this antics? Senna is a motorsport legend, he will always be remembered, regardless of the years that pass. The vast majority of motorsport fans have nothing to say about Roland, he was a rookie, so they only talk about Senna. Roland will always be remembered in F1 for the tragic accident, but never at Senna's level. One has to learn to separate that. Other drivers died in the same season in F1 and do not have this clowning. Rest in peace Senna and Ratzenberger.

Gerhard Berger (sometimes a match , learned Senna to relax a bit more ) 5. Andretti ( couldnt adapt in f1 but had a few good races 6 Cecotto 7. Nakajima (average driver, debut season 8. Dumfries ( ok had some bad luck , but otherwise what did he do in f1 ? ) I feel some one is missing ..

The MP4/6 should be second (let's be honest, nothing is going to displace the 4/4 from top) simply because it was the last REAL racing car to win the F1 world championship.....normally aspirated 3.5 litre V12, manual gearbox and no active suspension or other electronic wizardry. And as for the Williams FW16 getting such poor results......well, you'd almost think it was competing against an illegal car......oh, hang on a minute....

The list was perfect until you started to make changes. Putting that Toleman better than the Lotus 98T is not reasonable at all, in 1986 Senna was leading the championship with this car, against the great FW11 of Mansell and Piquet + the McLarens of Prost and Rosberg. As well Senna was in the game for the WC until the end, with this car.

I think the MP4/6 deserves the top spot. The MP4/4 regardless of its success is more a car attributed to both Senna, Prost and the entire McLaren team than Senna himself. The MP4/6 is Senna's car and was where he reached the peak of his powers, as a man as well as a driver. He had to deal with the rising Williams too. And personally I think of that car when I think of senna more than the MP4/4. The MP4/4 is the whole of mclaren, not just Senna.

I have no doubt, if Senna had lived, he would've scored many points, and would've won many races in the Williams FW16. If he had lived, he would've ended up driving the B-spec Williams FW16, which was introduced about mid-season. Remember, just before his unfortunate demise, Senna was appointed as the head of the board for the Grand Prix Drivers' Association The ultimate aim was improving safety in Formula 1, and I'm Senna would've pushed for that, as he did have discussions on his final day about reforming the GPDA, to improve the safety in F1, which did end up happening. Had he survived, he would've been the Head of the GPDA, and also would've ended up racing through the rule and regulation changes, and most likely would've pushed Schumacher to the championship.

Throwing apart the emotional side, there is no way to put the Williams FW16 that low on the leaderboard. The car got 3 out of 3 poles, was obviously fast. It got faster and easier to drive over the season, but from the beginning the car was fast. Those Lotus never had a chance of winning a championship by any means
@yewisemountaingoat528
@yewisemountaingoat528 5 лет назад
Actually the 1985 Lotus had a chance of winning the championship. Nobody led more laps than Senna that season. Senna led 271 laps in 1985, world champion Prost led 178 laps, 2nd in championship Alboreto only led 98 laps. The Lotus 97T was fast enough to have 8 pole positions in 1985 (7 by Senna, 1 by De Angelis). You're saying the car got 3 out of 3 poles, but what about Lotus's 8 poles in 1985 when McLaren only had 2, Williams 3 and Ferrari 1? If Senna led 271 laps in 1985 (more than anybody else) then the car was obviously fast enough to be a winner. So why didn't he win the 1985 title? Well, there's the issue of reliability... Part of this was actually Senna's fault since he went flat out to win and the turbo era had fast but fragile cars. An example of him pushing too hard would be Imola 1985 which he led commandingly for the first 56 laps. With four laps to go he ran out of fuel. The next race was Monaco. Senna started from pole and led the first 17 laps, then he retired with engine problems. Fact is Senna scored 0 points in the 9 next races following his win in Portugal. Senna led the British GP the first 59 laps but got a fuel injection problem and retired with 6 more laps to go. He had also been a steady third in the Brazilian GP, the first race of the season but retired with electric problems. Had Senna just finished at Imola, Monaco and Silverstone he would have been 1985 world champion. Senna managed 8 poles in the 1986 Lotus but he raced 198 laps less than Prost and Piquet so reliability still plagued him and Lotus. "Those Lotus never had a chance of winning a championship by any means." Unless you really meant *Toleman* there's no way to call the 1985 and 1986 Lotuses uncompetitive.

FW16 was a good car, second on the grid on the few races Senna drove it. And it was quick, you cant have a 100% pole rate (3/3) on a slow machine. Even with its flaws and with the fact he died on that machine, it deserves a higher place
@Balnazzardi
@Balnazzardi 4 года назад
Ye I really have to agree on that....I mean I do get 100% why some ppl just want to hate that car, because without question it was the technical failure of that car that ended up getting Senna killed and he never scored a point in it (although in Aida it wasnt because of technical failure but because he had collision at the start with Mika Häkkinen I believe) but you have to look at how good pace it had and after all, before the B-spec of the car came in French, Damon Hill still managed to win a race in it and take two 2nd places... So while it was unreliable and aerodynamically unstable even according to Newey himself, it was still good enough to take poles and even wins, though whether that was more thanks to that raw power of Renault engine is another debate. Either way I would personally still rate it atleast above 1987 Lotus, perhaps even above the two other Lotus cars as well, but ofc I could rate it well under all the Mclaren cars he drove. FW16B is completely another matter, but ofc that B-spec of a car he never got to drive unfortunately. Overall even FW16 though was faster than any other car besides Benetton and if we rate purely based on that, it doesnt indeed deserve to be that low.

I aggre with the distaste of the 1994 williams, for it being the car Senna died in. The 93 McLaren had bespoke air inlets worth a reported 20-50hp at time depending on source with the works Ford and they got the high spec engine at France. The higher HP number seems absurd, but it was a better package than the Williams on slower tracks where the big horsepower deficiency wasnt as key. The buffoonish antics and carny excuses of Michael Andretti scuttle its reputation. Note Mika was up at sharp end of grid immediately, a place he would not return to for years. it was, as mentioned, a gizmo car every bit ad advanced as the Williams and superior in terms of telemetry, transmission, and handling. Worlds ahead of that lumbering 1992 V-12 barge. It was also a superior package to the Benetton, which Schumacher dragged to competitiveness despite lagging severely in active suspension.
@DrakesDomain

FW16 was way better than ranked here. Only reason the Benetton was remotely close was because they were using traction and launch control. Take those away and put the FW16 and B194 on equal terms and Senna dominates on cruise control.

No he doesnt. At the beginning of the season the car had an aero flaw resulting in a lack of rear grip. Senna managed to wrestle it to pole.
